I have a few Raspberry Pi units that I have Digi Hats on plus one that I recently switched to send the Audio Digital signal via the USB ports and used a DS2 USB to SPDIF convertor which after a little trial and error I got to work .

One thing I came across but does not seem to get a mention is that the standard default audio out is via either the 3.5 mm socket or the HDMI socket. Now given this and if the audio being fed to the HDMI socket is PCM 2 channel digital then the below should work as a digital out and feed for a stand alone DAC . Never tried this and wonder if it does work has anyone else gone down this route ?
