View Full Version : Alternative to JBL Control 1
I'm putting together a cheap system for my kitchen
Original thread here

I've ordered the amp suggested and was planning on using one of my spare pairs of speakers but Mrs Gaz considers them too big.
I'm pretty much decided on a pair of JBL control 1s unless I'm overlooking an alternative of similar size, spec and price (£80 from RS)
Any suggestions?

Wharfedale Diamond 9.0, £39 right now at Richer Sounds. Further up the budget, Q Acoustics 3020 £129, they have a bit of WAF too :)
Both a bit bigger than the JBLs I think?

True they are a bit bigger, but nicer looking imo :) JBLs look a bit industrial to me, but if size is the deciding factor, £80 is a lot of sound per pound.
Jbls be better in a kitchen environment I reckon. Easier to clean and no veneer to lift. The Diamonds are probably a slightly better speaker though.
They'll probably be stuck on top of wall units.

One often neglected thing about kitchen systems is the amount of airborne gunk that cooking generates. I would be looking at something like these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Monacor-WALL-04T-Pair-100V-White-Speaker-Sound-System-Weatherproof-IP65/183463120965?epid=22021330630&hash=item2ab7411045:g:lEcAAOSwZq5bsef2
I am not familiar with these units, but Monacor are a reputable company and make some very good budget drivers!

Control 1's are surprisingly good, had mine for years, I think I paid £50 new, as I said a few years ago.
Still doing service in my Study system.
For a while they did service in an estate car I had, driven by a power amp from the head unit. They sat facing upwards on the rear deck either side of the boot cover.
Dali Pico's are fabulous, if you can find some, similar size (maybe a bit bigger) a second hand bargain.

I recently purchased a pair of JBL Control 1's from Richer Sounds for £50 to use in my spare room/workshop.
Currently using them with a 1 watt x 2 test amp but am building a Nelson Pass Mosfet amp to go with them.
The Q-Accoustics WILL sound better but as mentioned they are considerably bigger.
This be just a heads up to say the JBLs can be had cheaper than at RS.
(Would have posted pix but have not a clue how to do that here).
