Avoid right turns when driving

Interesting, avoiding right turns (or left turns, mostly, outside of the UK) is safer, results in fewer pedestrian fatalities and saves fuel, according to the below-linked article. [The article was written in and for the US, so their left should be transposed for our (UK) right turn.]

Also in US you are more likely to get stuck at a traffic light when turning left, which seem to take longer to change than in UK, and can usually turn right when lights are on red.

In UK we have roundabouts which are still unusual in US.

I discovered this years ago. My base was in the centre of Birmingham. I was in sales with a company car and frequently had to run the gamut of traffic in busy times of day. Learnt to always turn left and not cross th stream of traffic.

I try to avoid right turns where its possible, especially if busy. Tesco rd end has a right turn into town that a lot of folk sit for an age at, while the savvy driver goes left and around roundabout and back up.:eyebrows: Some folk never seem to cotton on to that(and roundabout is only 100yds or less)
Also noticed that a huge amount of drivers have no conception of what rd markings mean... the other day i crossed double white lines(on a 3 carriageway rd) where the line nearest to me is broken and an oncoming car started honking at me. That sort of thing shows a lack of basic knowledge... must give out licences in a pack of sweeties:D

Back in the nineties I had a Nissan Sunny, which after about 6 months of ownership I decided wasn't the car for me, as it was a total bag of shite. So I put it up for sale. Two guys came over from Blackburn to see it (very popular car in Blackburn, the Nissan Sunny was).

Anyway, the car would make this funny knocking sound when turning right. So when we left my house I instructed him to turn left at the end of the street. In fact I managed to get him to go on a huge loop back to my house, with not a single right turn. He bought the car, and never heard from him again. Crappy though it was, probably better than all the others he'd looked at :)

It only needed a pot joint, probably on the nearside. The Nissan Sunny was one of the best cars on the road. It could be abused no end and just kept going and going, a bit like the MKII Escort from Ford.

I rarely had one in the Garage for any major repairs, just servicing, normal running costs and the odd bit of welding for the MOT.

I seem to remember the factory brake pipes were crap, but once changed for the copper cunifer, they were on for the life of the car. The engine was bullet proof, providing it was serviced properly.

Birmingham is an utter nightmare with driving , especially when they jump the lights and drive on the wrong side of the road .
