Anyone got one, or seen one yet? I've touched one, but not sure if it'd do much for me yet. Not quite sure what they could do for audio, but I'm sure it should be possible to store and/or play a moderate size CD collection using one. I might wait until they release a 100+Gbyte version.

All I can tell you is this: be careful. I pretty much lost a friend in early April, after he bought the iPad. He just briefly re-surfaced to tell me that I won't be hearing from him in a while. Never heard back from him again...

Apparently, this devilish little appliance is highly addictive. Some complain that it is a huge step back into the Dark Ages of the read-only web. It is geared toward consumption-only, and he was complaining that try as he might, all his attempts to participate on the web or to contribute something ended up unsuccessfully.

I love gadgets, but I really can't see the point over a standard notebook, (or a tablet if you must have touch screen) - and why such piffling small memory options (at silly prices) Nope, no idea why everyone is so excited...

I'm one of those who buys Steve Jobs' Reality Distortion Field (http://folklore.org/StoryView.py?story=Reality_Distortion_Field.txt) but I really wouldn't splash out on a first gen Apple product like this. You can guarantee it will improve a lot over the next year or two. Look now how the latest iPhone OS supports iPhone's back to the 2G (albeit without multi-tasking) but the poor old 1G is left in the cold.

I'm more than happy with my titanium unibody MacBook. It has a proper keyboard and the screen and keyboard fold together so it's protected from being scratched! What a novel idea :) I can't see anyone seriously typing on an iPad screen; no way two handedly while reclining on a sofa.

It looks nice though and the screen is lovely.

A note on an unsuccessful attempt to nullify the Reality Distortion Field (http://folklore.org/StoryView.py?project=Macintosh&story=Are_You_Gonna_Do_It.txt)

I was thinking about one to store all my cds and try computer audio as im running out of space. But Logitech have brought out a small squeesbox with a screen £250. Couple that with a decent hard drive and bobs your uncle i reckon.

Watch the audio outputs. The iPad doesn't have a digital out as far as I can tell so you'd be dependent upon the inbuilt DAC  It may stream to an Airport Express though...

As a confirmed Apple Household (x2 Intel iMac, 1 G5 iMac, Apple TV, various iPods), I still can't see the point of the iPad, as much as I wish I could.

Having just been 'burned' by the disappointment of the fundamentally flawed iPhone (I'm sorry, but a 'mobile' device which needs almost constant charging is a non-starter for me), I'm be exercising a little more caution before being an Apple 'early adopter' again.

I'd be more interested in the iPad if it had *some* connectivity for other devices.

I thought the iPad was a complete joke when I first saw it announced but now having lived with one for the last two months I have to say it is utterly brilliant. I bought it for the whole family to use, it sits in the living room and is easy access to all. It offers instant boot and quick n easy web browsing along with email, games and such a multitude of apps I wouldn't know where to start! Suffice to say that the comments made previously I think are ill founded and such is the success of the concept others are now trying to enter the market, now that the biggest endorsement going ;)

I think others will always try to enter the market of almost anything that Apple sell, not because of any intrinsic worth of the product, but because they feel they can turn a coin on Apples reputation and marketing. It's not an endorsement of the product, but of Apple's success - not the same thing.
Jusy my opinion.

Sorry, I don't understand how the existence or success of the two products you cite disproves my statement.
I don't think I actually said that Apple have not made successful or good products. As it happens, my opinion is that those two things are entirely different - big sales figures don't mean the product is good, it just means people like it - not the same at all.
My point, that you don't seem to have understood, is that other companies will blindly follow Apple with me-too products, whether the product is any good or not.

I think the word is perfect :)

It disproves your statement because the recent success of the company is built upon those products and and your last comment make no sense either good long term sales mean the product is a) good and b) addresses a desire or need in the market. A company will not remain solvent for long if the product is crap or a competitor comes out with something better.

iPad (iPhone and Touch) have an original inertia scrolling/spinning/zooming interface with solid-object feel using a multi-point touch screen algorithm that makes them different from scrolling/zooming interfaces used by others.
I guess this makes them "unique".

It disproves your statement
Sorry, it does nothing of the sort. My statement was about other companies producing me-too products, simply because Apple has been successful in the past with it's own products. Therefore when Apple release a new product, others will follow because they are convinced that the shiny new Apple-thing will create a demand for a product type.

To be crudely illustrate the point, let's imagine that Apple were to develop the iSore - a device which does nothing other than to sit on your desk with an illuminated Apple logo shining on the top and demanding to have it's batteries recharged every week or so. Every so often, and at random, it flies up & lands on your foot making it sore. We'd all agree this is not a good product.

However, someone will copy that, and market it purely because of Apple's track record.

The statement was not in reference to Apple's success or otherwise, nor did it refer to the worth or otherwise of their products.
Therefore the sales figures of a couple of their products disprove nothing.

I think I'm better placed to use the word 'balderdash', to which I'd certainly add 'piffle'.

I guess that would be useful if you have your PC in another room - my wife and I are a right pair of saddos - laptop each either end of the sofa!Interesting this - no comment from our house.

However, it has been noted that if (certain) pairs of laptops are in line with the wireless access point, that the throughput drops off drastically. Also, some laptops have directional response. Might be better to sit on separate sofas at right angles to avoid loss of link speed due to laptop orientation.

Lastly - do not put laptops on top of a metal biscuit tin - unless you want to have a really low data rate.

How do I know all this? :-)

Once again, it comes down to definition of what is a bad product.
And 'bad' is a pretty strong word, but yes, it has been known to happen has it not?
How about:

VHS when there was an alternative in Betamax?
The RCA phono plug compared to the Camac or XLR connector?
Everyone who ever fell for a pyramid selling scam.
Windows ME
Windows Vista
Firestone car tyres (several million-odd recalled in the early 1990's)
What about much of what passes for food in certain 'restaurants'?

Your first two comparisons do not work in my opinion as they are a comparison between good products that worked and better products and not good versus bad. Analog phono interconnects with RCA connections are good products with XLR terminations thought to be better. The VHS was a good product but the Beta may have been a better product.

Certainly there are bad products out there but I did state if they performed the tasks and met the needs of the buyer then to me they are not bad. There certainly may be better or better in your eyes or my eyes but that doesn't make them bad across the board.

The Grand Wazoo
14-06-2010, 23:59
Well that's where the definition seperates us:
I think Betamax was bad & VHS was worse.........and I did back then, only having ever invested money in a VCR once, and even then it was only out of necessity, so this is no revisionism in the light of DVD or any newer product.

Analogue interconnects with RCA connections are a poor compromise, made so by a dreadfully designed connector with almost no merit whatsoever other than low cost. We put up with them because we have to. We have to because they became the industry standard by being cheap. They're no longer cheap because the turd has been polished beyond belief. So they are of even less merit now than they ever were.

In my mind a good product has far fewer compromises than either of those things. We'll have to agree to differ here, I think.

Even the name Apple and logo was from The Beatles.

Even if that is the case, that doesn't detract from the fact that Apple, if not having a totally original idea, managed to take something and make it totally mainstream and successful.

The fact is that iPod is as much a 'definition' for the MP3 player as Hoover is for a vacuum cleaner.

Don't misunderstand me, even as a hardened iMac user, I'm absolutely not a Steve Jobs disciple and don't agree with everything they do or think that everything they produce is great. I from personal experience I thought that Apple TV was a complete missed opportunity (could have been the first really successful media streamer but hardware limits and 'Apple lockdown' tied it's shoelaces together) and that while a nice gadget, the iPhone is actually fundamentally flawed as a mobile phone due to it's woeful battery life.

That said, Apple do have a knack for making things desirable, and in the case of the iMac, Macbook and Mac Pro, which are well made and good at what they do.

As much as I'd like to like the iPad, I'm just not seeing the point of it. Unless I can turn it into a giant touch screen remote control for my system of course.

Is there an app for that? ;)

I'm still not absolutely convinced about the iPad, but some features are good. Being able to scale most web pages and images is a great thing, but it doesn't always work. One of the problems is Apple's refusal to incorporate Flash software, which means that some web sites don't work in the same way as on other machines. The start up time for the iPad is really good, and being able to get onto web sites within a few seconds beats the heck out of starting up a PC.
It's also very nice as an ereader. Personally I'd like an ereader which could display music - not sure if such things exist yet.

I'm guessing the next iPad will have a much better display (the current one is good, but only the same resolution as most netbooks), and possibly some other helpful features, and more memory. For me - will I last out until next year for the next model? Probably not!
