My new toy - the Technics RS-9900. Three heads, three motors, two boxes and a whacking great wired remote control that would be ideal for lassoing a burglar!

Working fairly well but in need of a service so it's off to my 'man who can' very soon, ready for its triumphant return whereupon I can start wondering where the heck I'm going to put it....

Wow... a real classic. What a lovely machine. Separate transport and record/playback amplifier... not a common configuration. Where are you getting your machine serviced?

I'm sending it to a very good friend of mine who knows all there is to know about compact cassette. In fact, my experience of his repairs suggests that he knows pretty much all there is to know about most things hi-fi related. I know of no-one else who could bring a "deceased" Sony PSB-80 Biotracer turntable back to life!!

Were any brought into this country?

Yes they were my brother in law has one. The 'RS-671USD' & 'RS-678US' looked the same but just single box 2 Head machines, still great decks all the same..

To be fair Adam, if your can cope with your collection of 45 turntables I'm sure you can find room for one cassette deck, even if it is on the large size.....

To tease you in return, Adam, here is my latest acquisition, fully working after about 3 complete days spent on it. And the sound is very nice too!

Good lord, I haven't seen one of those for more than thirty years...:) Those meters were something as I remember, with the peak needles as well as the mean-level ones..

Yes, these meters are just amazing - and it is possible to switch the mean, the peak or both. Here is a closer look (photo was taken when I was servicing the deck).

It is a better one - AD6900, with three ferrite heads and dual-needle meters. AD6700 looks very similar.

Ah, very nice indeed Alex, and I remember those 'two meters in one' units - absoutely barkingly superb!

Mind you, if we're talking VU meters, perhaps I should also own up that I bought another unit along with the RS-9900. Yep, I also have the SH-9020 power meter unit, which is little more than a couple of big tasty VU meters in a nice box, so I can now have VU action no matter what I'm playing!

Piccy will follow when I get five minutes.....

Shows the Aiwa's age where Dolby level is set at +5 on the scale. Naks and other later machines put it at 0VU or -1 IIRC, but that could have been once metal tapes became more established.
