View Full Version : Electronumpty's Bigbottle MC phono blowout!
Hi Folks
Ok well I sorted the DCB1 (note to self make some summary notes on the thread ) and now it's time to start on the Bigbottle MC phono stage that Oliver has invented with the assistance of Alan:). I have had the pcb for a while and been collecting parts for the past few months so am at the stage where I can start the build , hence the new thread to document the trials and tribulations of this numpty project :D. It is the 1st iteration of the board so MC only, not the more recent mm/mc one.
I've been thinking about this for a while and really wanted to expose the valves, however the board heatsink and other component sizes make this a bit difficult. Thinking on it I though I'd make a sub frame so that I can suspend the valve holders above the PCB, linking them by wire soldered onto the valve holder and then soldered onto the corresponding place on the pcb below. This can then sit just below the case and hopefully allow me to expose the valves for all to see and admire :stalks:
So I bought some 2 mill aluminium plate and did some drilling today to see if this make sense or not :mental: and made the subframe, the pics should give you an idea of what I mean. :)
Plate marked out.

Ok so this is what i mean by a suspended sub frame. Glad to have aligned the holes correctly and the valve holders fit just right above the corresponding place on the pcb. Just need to stuff the board now and then get the right height standoffs! :)

I love the inventiveness but you could've turned the board upside down and wired the valve bases?

Although I'm thinking of/investigating using some damping/isolation of the valve base so that would allow me to use that rather than straight to the board.

Always put the resistors in first then the Fets. If you get any static without resistors in place it'll blow the fet, potentially.
Don't want to have to do that twice!

A sound investment then! Gonna send it to Antex , prob out of guarantee but they should know how it failed and the component in case of others. Got a 50 note solder station coming. :) good reviews on the net etc.

Andy pm me with details of the base and back and I’ll see if I can help out (no cost). Need to know size of base and back, thickness of alloy and would you prefer 2 pieces or a single unit with back bent up from base ?
ASAP if you would like me to help as I am a bit poorly and due to go in hospital after which I will be unable to get to the workshop for 3 months or so.

I have been very kindly and nicely advised by a a fellow AOSer that lifting the valve bases off the PCB using leads may lead to the risk of oscillation and unwanted RF pick up with the BBC world service (my words not his ) or some such coming through instead of clean vinyl style tunez
To prevent this I will need grid stopper resisters near the valve bases it seems and so I'll have to read around the subject as this is way too techy for me atm
In the mean time any thoughts/advice most welcome!
If it comes to it I can always move the valve bases back to the PCB, which would be a shame but not a disaster!
Cheers Electronumpty! :)

It's called the Miller effect: http://www.valvewizard.co.uk/gridstopper.html
However if you do add grid stoppers, you will be changing Alan's design and perhaps the overall sound. I would suggest you seek Alan's advice.

Why do you want to separate the valve bases from the PCB?
It's called the Miller effect: http://www.valvewizard.co.uk/gridstopper.html
However if you do add grid stoppers, you will be changing Alan's design and perhaps the overall sound. I would suggest you seek Alan's advice. He wants the valves outside the chassis.
I did say he could've mounted the pcb upside down and made those connections very small lol.
Too late now.
Well that was the plan, [emoji848] so will have to rethink it. Its not a disaster as I can remount them on the pcb without to much hassle.

Think I might hook up as is to see what it sounds like and test the board etc. then remount the sockets and finish the case off . Nothing lost there as I haven't cut the ply yet. Just need to add some ventilation into it.
All part of learning anyway so it's fine by me.

Andy I would say try it first, there are some grid stoppers on the pcb.
You may get some instability with squeaks and noises. I think it would be OK to fit additional small value grid stoppers in the grid wires, I can advise as necessary.

Ok so this strange , no glow , measured voltage into and out of the dc blocker into the tx 243v or so ,ok. measured voltage going into the board on the 9v its 7.3 or something and on the 165 v its about 17v
Turned it off and double checked the wiring to the board from the tx and its fine . Tx is really hot now can't touch it.
Faulty tx?

I did that once. Traffo made crackling noises as it got hot and I turned it off quickly.

Or possibly the 165v.
Put a pic up of how it's wired.

OK, have you got connector blocks?
If so, disconnect the pcb and put the wires as you have them now.
Switch it on and measure what's coming to the connector blocks. If it's right there, you have an issue elsewhere.

09-11-2019, 21:12
Oh, be quick too as if you have the traffo wired wrong, you could burn it out very easily and that's not a cheap fix, as you know

Also, do one winging at a time.
If you have the 909 wired right, it should read 9v on either side of the 0 and 18v if you measure the two outers.
Don't have the 165v wired up at all. Just separate the wires and secure them in connector blocks. Does that make sense.
If the 909 is right, you can then measure the 165v
Yes that make sense cheers

Sounds like you have some sort of short on the 165V winding. Check you have the rectifier diodes the correct way round and also check for shorts with the soldered joints to the ground plane.

Are those figures "off load"?
If you mean not connected to the PCB etc then yes.
They are about 7% higher when not drawing current, which is not unusual.

Ah ok thanks for that, so for 165v that puts it at 176.56v which is almost dead on , that's a relief as when it heated up so much I was worried I'd blown it .

Ok so I cleaned the bottom of the pcb with IPA and got some gunk off to see if that made a difference, tried it again but no joy
9v reads 7.4v and 165v reads 2.66v , now I'll check all components are in the right place, looks like the 165 is the issue.

Yeah going to check them all , could take a while.
ok so far 2 resistors look all over the place when measured - R143 and R141 the readings don't go to the proper value and constantly change on the MM. I can't see how they can have shorted from the soldering so maybe they just need replacing? Measured on the lead in by the body so shouldn't make a difference if they are in circuit no?

The readings are going to change due to capacitance in the circuit.
I can't remember if the heatsinks are earthed, have you isolated V145 (Fet) from its heatsink.
To try to isolate the short lift up one end of R151, 390 ohms and try again. If still shorted the problem is by the rectifiers and regulator Fet V145. If not the problem is further down the circuit.

When you say "try again" do mean add the power from the tranny or measure the Rs again?
Firebottle
12-11-2019, 17:14
No I meant apply power again.
resistors rarely go short. can change value tho especially if a lot of current is passed through them from a short elsewhere.. bad soldering could also cause it. small components on a tight board and its easy to cause a short.
ok did that after isolating the FET from the heatsink and R151 - R143 and R141 measure ok now , have to go out now but thanks for the help.

You’ve done a good job there Andy! it’s given me the boost I needed to get on with mine.
I tried doing my build slightly cheaper and ordered an R-core transformer from eBay. I couldn’t get the correct voltages from it neither could a friend who builds his own amps etc. It put a right damper on it for me and I gave up but He advised me to contact the seller and ask for a refund (I did) Now I have a refund I’ve just ordered a transformer from Toroidy.pl so I could do with getting on with the rest of it before it arrives.
Glad it's up and running mate. Enjoy!
Thanks , I'm feeling really chuffed about it and its sounding pretty good already so we'll see what its like burnt in. Tbh I did have a couple of ffs moments but it's worth the effort if you can get through it. If you really don't want to stress out buy a case , don't make one!:mental:
Oh yes I found Toroidy pretty efficient so you shouldn't have to wait long for the tx.
Like it - good work :D

Cases are so expensive. The 1 I like is the same as what Oli used but it’s £80  I’ll probably go for that 1 though. I haven’t time to be making 1.
What cable are you using for the sockets? That was my next step. Cable AWG and make.
So some observations I made about the sound so far -
So some initial impressions of the BB . First caveat is that I cannot compare to any stages costing more than £200 as I have never heard any, second is that my reference is to a Firebottle OTP which I have had for a few years and enjoyed immensely during that time , cost about £220 if I recall correctly.
Also these comments are only after 5/6 hours listening so I imagine there is more to come , but I like listening to kit as it beds in and seeing the difference as the sound develops.
1st thing I noticed was the extension on cymbals, after the hit the decay wwas long and gradual, they really shimmered when listening the Bonzo on Zep 4.
Second immediate standout was the presence and immediacy of the sound , the closest I can describe is almost like a wall of sound. Now this is something that I quite like but took me by surprise. However as things progessed this wall gave way to much more defined detail but still had that immediacy and presence.
As it played the soundstage became deeper as tike went on, very 3D to me, almost made the OTP sound flat, 2D in comparison, it isn’t, but there’s a very noticable difference in depth.
Next was the tone, I don’t have much experience of valve kit but I imagine this is largely down to what ones are being used. Rich and crunchy guitars, natural vocals where you can hear the intake of breath and slight modulations in notes that weren’t there beforehand. Another factor of detal developing.
Bass was slightly recessed at first and the lower registers not really hitting, but I have had this with Mundorf caps before in the DCB1 so wasn’t worried, true to form by the 3rd album it was starting to come on stronger , still a bit to develop I think but its early days.
Playing some Elton John the piano sounds really natural and on tracks like Crocodile Rock the boogie factor really comes through which is great.
As an example of detail, on Zep 4 the more rocky tracks have a great and full guitar sound quite particular to that Zep album. Heard before the 2 channels L and R sound like 2 different guiters playing the same/similar riffs. Now they are, but what I can pick out now is that often they are both in different keys (not a musician but thats the impression I get) and also playing differnt licks and notes to add to the overall effect. Quite complex but not apparent to me so obviously before.
Finally when I say the music has more presence it’s not bloated or forced in any way, it still sounds very natural.
More soon but very pleased so far , good job Oliver and Alan!

Nice 1 mate. Coming on nicely. That’s going to look good when oiled.

😍😍😍
How's it sound Andy ?Hi Robbie , how ya doing? Hope things are well with you. It sounds great now its run in, more impact and detail with a large and deep sound stage. Its the best stage I've heard but I don't have much experience with them.
I think I'm really getting some good sounds out of the ZYX and it is a big step up from my Firebottle OTP stage
