My SL-150mk2 / Jelco project

Hi Guys,

I thought I'd share a couple of photos of my SL-150mk2 / Jelco project table. I had the table base powder coated grey/black before installing a Jelco SA-750D.

The bearing on this table has a slightly different body than the SL-1200mk2, but the spindle appears the same so I'm thinking it could be upgraded. If funds permit a external power supply would be nice too, but I've still got too many other projects to fund in the foreseeable future.

Looks good ' the SA750 looks made for it, i would expect it to sound very good !.

Looks great. The deck itself as standard could sound a little too "rich toned" for its own good, but a sympathetic cartridge, mat, supply and support should remove this.

From what I remember, the current 1200 series was a cost-cutting exercise on the one you have and a return to the previous styling.

I suspect a Timestep or similar (any news on the alternative one yet Marco?) would be every bit as good as it is on the current model (it even helps my SL-150 with a voltage change tweak apparently)

I find it interesting comparing the features and design of the different Technics decks; I wish I could find out why they incorporated different features in different models. The SL-150/1500m2 has a dynamically balanced platter, as does the SP-10mk2, yet the 1200mk2 and family (1600/1700/1800mk2) do not. Also the wood base sprung feet suspension make this more like an SP-10 mk1 suspension/isolation wise.

I emailed Dave Cawley to see if his bearing mods could be performed for this model (I have a spare bearing too), but he said it's not possible. I also have an email in to Applied Fidelity to see if they can upgrade the bearing.

The 1200mk2 came a year or three after the deck you have (I think there was a 1650/1750 and 1850 in between, but we never had those and they only lasted a season (late August till Christmas) before disappearing for ever in the UK... By then, we were heavily into Thorens, Linn and any Rega's we could trade in and "direct drive" became a dirty word.

Thank heavens the DJ fraternity took to the Techie as they did and still do.
