Italian food and vino enjoyed outside in the warm sunshine - how do you tell where the holiday ends and home life begins? I was going to suggest the difference is nice scenery and foreign accents, but you live in Wales, so it's not even that :D

Lol... Is there a risk of someone coming and stealing your food from in front of you? Otherwise, why pile it all at once onto your plate?
That is the British way: rather gluttonous and which encourages waste. If you want more, you can always take it from the pot (where it's being kept warm), or serving platter, after you've finished what's on your plate. *That* is the European (and Italian) way - and which helps prevent waste.
Learn to take time to enjoy and savour your food, rather than gulp it down like gruel!;)

We've brought back so many goodies from France and Italy that it won't be hard to replicate the eating (and drinking) experience here, especially while the lovely weather prevails and Del is off work (she still has another two weeks of her holidays left), and we intend to make the most of it!
She's also got family coming over to visit from Germany on Saturday, and it's forecast for Sunday to be a scorcher, so there'll be plenty of al fresco dining to come!:cool:

Lol - I counted just under 200 bottles in total of wine, aperitifs and spirits, once the car had been emptied!:eyebrows:
Loads of major bargains.... That's one of the main reasons why we travel abroad by car, so we can bring back loads of goodies to enjoy at home, not just food and wine, but nice things we see for the house, often from local markets in various towns and villages, but also to enjoy the lovely scenery and tour around, which you can't do on a plane.
So when are you popping down? We'll need a hand to drink it!:D

And doing it the Italian way would not prevent waste in my case - I NEVER leave any of a meal, and that's not due to gluttony. I just know how much is the right amount, so why would I be arsed eating a half portion then taking myself away to put some more on? Your meal would barely cover the bottom of me trough :D

Ha - well, I'm different, as I never know how much I want to eat until I get started! And one of my pet hates is having my plate piled up with food, and feeling obliged to eat it all, even when I'm full.... So I prefer putting manageable amounts of food onto my plate, which I know I'll eat, then if I want more I can take it.
Plus, it means that what's left over is kept warm in the pot, until/if I want it, rather than getting cold on the plate. Can't stand food that's meant to be eaten piping hot getting tepid or cold... And I'm a slow eater, so that's liable to happen! I also like to arrange food on the plate so it looks nice/appetising, and so for that you need to create some space:)
Don't do food that looks like it's just been dolloped out like school dinners, with no love or attention...:nono:

Cheers, dude - and defo! The only time we fly is when when there's no other option. For one thing, I can't be doing with the stress and hassle at airports these days (huge queues and security checks), especially at peak holiday times!!:doh:

I have a problem with food. I tend to do more than I need or want, but polish off most of it. Doesn't really help with my trying to lose a few pounds.
After starting off making what I expect to be a smallish meal, it tends to end up rather enormous, but I eat it 'cos I hate wasting stuff.
I think I may go on a cereal & fruit diet. Only after I've used up all the tasty fattening food I have stocked though! :)

Defo, Robin. That, and the associated cost savings, is why we bring wine back. If we'd bought that stuff in the UK (even if it were available), it's have cost hundreds of pounds more!

This weather is doing my head in...doing my nut right off. Flooding, high winds and it feels as though its been raining for weeks. Its affecting business at work so it just causes uncertainty

You should get one of those polythene "rain scarves", y'know, like what you see women of a certain age wearing when dragging their tartan shopping trolleys down to the post office for their pensions. If you combine that look with a super-short skirt and heels it'll give the other pensioners something to gossip about, and the blokes may not need the little blue pills for a day or two :)

That two days in Scotland was my holiday, for the moment anyway.
Did the usual touristy stuff, a visit to West Coast Motorcycles in Glasgow, and also a really old-fashioned ironmonger's, which smelt of creosote and paraffin (love those places). And came home with some nice souvenirs (some Aberdeen Angus burgers and three 7mm hss drill bits).
Drove up there Friday with no rain, sunny all day yesterday, and then in the small hours of this morning...sat nav recommended an alternative route to avoid local flooding. Which was nice, drove through some places I didn't know existed, and only added ten minutes to the journey. The bright lights of Ecclefechan were getting a bit boring anyway.

Im trying to pile up my cash and I dont like spending on holidays :) I thought I would be alright with my three or four days off regularly over the summer.
I purposely dont work longer hours to enjoy my time off

Something seems to be going on with global warming. I can't remember an August this bad but I do have the memory of a goldfish :)
When I was a nipper we used to go on holiday to Anglesey most Augusts. It seemed to be raining constantly.
That two days in Scotland was my holiday, for the moment anyway.

Lolz... We never get flooding here because we live at the top of a hill, and we don't get that much rain, as we're sheltered by the mountains.
No, I meant a proper holiday, like away somewhere abroad for a couple of weeks. You need to recharge your batteries now and then dude, otherwise you'll just get jaded, especially when winter kicks in!:)

If not, you'll end up in an early grave, as statistically stress is today's biggest killer!

I should mention that we did go abroad at the beginning of June, and enjoyed a really lazy week. And if I can scrape the money together we'll go away again in September. Trouble is, the hours and effort required to raise that money is proving really stressful. Catch 22!
Preston's largest window installation company has taken me on to fit for them - I'm a one man fitting team! - but the work load/hours required to make it worthwhile is stretching my abilities way beyond what I'm used to when serving my own customers. I'm determined not to burn any bridges with my usual customers, so this is making the days really long and I find myself in the unfamiliar position of dreading next day's work :(
I've told Mrs. P that I'll see it out till after Christmas and if I can't find a good workable balance I'll knock it on the head.
You can do long hours when you're young no problem. Our age not so easy.

A WEEK! hopefully he’ll confound medical opinion but even so, it certainly made me think. He’s hoping to spend the last days he has in the company of his family and friends. It has certainly made me take a look at myself.
I've seen some of your posts Alex, and it's clear you make plenty of time for your family, which is the important stuff - I don't know how you fit it all in! - but if your work commitments are making excessive demands on your time and energy, you have to really watch that.
Unfortunately for a lot of people, the option to "take your foot off the gas" and lighten your workload or work shorter hours can be viewed unfavourably by employers, especially if there are younger colleagues snapping at your heels :( I'm just glad I'm not in that position, and I can to some degree accept or pass on jobs if I want to. As I said I will give it till Christmas, after which it won't even be my decision - Anita will make sure I step back!

Thanks for the info, mate. All interesting stuff. For me, however, the bit in bold says it all, and unless you're absolutely desperate for the money, I would knock it on the head right now, if that's how you feel, and revert to normal. No amount of money is worth it, if earning it makes you feel so unhappy.

Exactly, mate. When you pop your clogs, you want to be able to look back on your life with great fondness at all the nice things you did and the precious (and long lasting) memories you made with your loved ones, and the success of the relationships you formed with them, whether it was with your children or wife/partner.
Have as little regrets as possible, and don't depart this earth with a legacy of simply having worked like a dog all your life, no matter how much you earned.
Life isn't about money or possessions; it's about people, and so how good a life you've led, and how nice a person you were (kind and caring), will ultimately be reflected by how many people turn up at your funeral, and how well you were thought of by those who knew you, not how big a house or how many flash cars you had - and certainly not how much money you have left in the bank.
Memories will always be more important than money. Plus, given what happened to the chap you mentioned, you also need to LIVE FOR THE MOMENT and have fun, as well as trying to plan for the future, because you don't know what the future will bring. Thousands of pounds in the bank is worth hee-haw if you're six foot under!

Yup, I also admire Alex, in terms of the commitment he devotes to building a strong bond with his family, whilst working hard but always ensuring that he spends quality time with his loved ones. It's text-book parenting, and something many others today should follow!
If you've got kids, then rest assured that when you die, their abiding memories of you will be the nice times you've spent together, and how you were always there for them when they needed you (or not) - not the stuff you've bought them or the money you've left them in the bank... You can't buy their love or respect.
How good a father you were to your children, and/or how good a husband you were to your wife or partner (if applicable) *is what matters*, and ultimately what you'll be judged on, not the size of your bank balance!
In terms of the bit in bold, I agree, but if you're really good at your job (know your shit inside out in your field of expertise), and are seen as an asset, and headhunted by potential employers (as you are and have been), then you can pick and choose your jobs and who YOU want to work for at any age (within reason), if you have the balls and confidence in your abilities to say 'fuck it', when things aren't going right, and seek pastures new.
Often, in my experience, good employers will respect you more for standing up for yourself, and showing them that if they want to keep you, then they'll have to listen to your requests for an improved wage and/or better working conditions, rather than merely being a sheep, bowing down to their unfair demands, and allowing yourself to be walked all over. But that's the problem these days: so many folks are mortgaged up to their eyeballs and in significant debt, so they're too scared to say 'boo to a coo', for fear of losing their jobs (and regular wage).
Aside from being good at your job, and so able to use that to your advantage in negotiations with an employer, over wages or working conditions, you'll also be in a healthier position to ride any changes in your financial fortunes, if you have little or no debts to service during any period of unemployment.
That is why it pays to live a simple life, WELL WITHIN YOUR MEANS, funded by working sensible hours, rather than constantly living beyond your means or working like a dog, simply to amass 'trinkets', as one day, as sure as eggs is eggs, having such a superficial and materialistic outlook on life will come back to bite you on the ass!

still 16 here. breezy tho so feels a bit cooler. you wouldnt wear shorts if sense was in your head, tbh. a light jacket if straying far but i was out back feeding the birds in a polo top and didnt feel chilled, although i wouldnt want to be out too long like that.

To be fair, the "black stuff" is usually called 'emery paper', the "yellowy gold stuff" 'sandpaper'.
Aye emery rock was used. Not sure if it still is but using it with a fluid allows eventually a mirror finish. Just use finer and finer paper.

Defo true, but I haven't reached that stage yet. I wear t-shirts right up until mid-October, and sometimes beyond. Still got shorts on now!:D
Like you say, it's an age thing, but some folks are also naturally warm-blooded (like me), so my normal body temp is always a few deg higher than most folk's, no matter the time of year. That's why I struggle in severe heat, but can sit quite happily in rooms, with no heating on, when others would find it cold. Del [short for Dolores, btw] is the same.
Saves a lot on our heating bills!:cool:

They get 7 weeks these days do they? When I was a kid it was 5 weeks, then in about 1969 it went up to 6 weeks.
All progress I suppose - maybe kids learn quicker these days, although it doesn't look like it. With all the names they've got for it these days (ADD, ADHD, BADHEAD, etc) It's more likely that the staff just need to get away from them for longer :D
I'm not complaining - seven weeks of brat taxi-free commuting certainly makes work more bearable :)

Lol - I think it's six, but Del had some time owed to her, and so added an extra week onto her summer hols, as she also often does at Christmas. She's certainly earned the break, as being a teacher today is a very demanding job. It's not only teaching, but also being a social worker, mentor, councillor and stand-in parent for the kids she teaches (due to a lot of 'parents' these days not being worthy of the name)!:doh:
Anyway, it means we've got plenty of time to go away somewhere nice and also get some stuff done in the house, particularly in the garden, have a few BBQs and socialise with friends and family:cool:

We’ve come away today to Holt for a week in North Norfolk, been a glorious day and looks like it will be a good week. Had a fabulous dinner in the King’s Head (160 yards away) and now chilling back at the cottage - kids decorating kites ready to fly on the beach at Wells-next-the-sea on Wednesday. Off to the dinosaur park tomorrow and forecast is 31c. Hottest place today (and a new record for a Bank Holiday Monday) was in Norfolk not far away. Very pleasant now in the garden with a glass of Rioja. :)

Cheers buddy, just had a family game of Cluedo! Well, you have to on holiday, don’t you! :lol: kids tucked up and we’re sitting under the stars with some chillout in the background and planning the rest of the week, and of course, another bottle of the red stuff! :cheers:

Yeah, same here Robbie. I don't like it. There's stuff I want to do outside, but it's too bleedin' hot!
It's 31C indoors, but with a couple of fans on, it's manageable. Even the dog is sitting in front of a fan! :D
Yep, certainly been a sticky one.
Gonna be another hot night even with a few windows open and thin cotton sheet...:o

Yup. Been too hot to work outside and I have fences and garage doors to paint wood preserver onto. Start tomorrow hopefully.
Too hot today, not sure exactly but into the 30’s. Supposed to be 24 tomorrow, crabbing and a bit of beach at Wells-next-the-sea planned, so should be nice for that. :)

I fell over the other day. Dog tripped me up in the garden and I went down with a right old bang on the concrete path, had a few bumps and strains from it and the hand I put out was bruised purple, all OK now. :)

The dog made more fuss than I did. She ran under my feet and rushed off yelping when I stumbled over her. Didn't hurt her though. :)

Pishing down here and it's LOVELY!! Temp about 15C less than yesterday, and the air is now fresh and cool... Got the back door open and just enjoying listening to the rain falling down and the cool breeze waft all around me, with some nice choons playing:)
That's the good (or bad thing), depending on how you look it it, with this old house. Because the walls are so thick, when the sun's been baking them for days, they retain the heat for a long time, so even though it's much cooler outside now, inside is still warm.
The bad thing is that during sustained periods of hot weather, it can get quite unbearably warm inside, as the heat refuses to dissipate and becomes rather oppressive. Anyway, I digress! Time for my cappuccino:cool:

Very wet this morning
Nippy here. Sun was out earlier but now gone overcast and looks like rain.
We had some fog here last night but it was after my bedtime so I missed it :(
Been a lovely day here, sunny and bright, with highs of 22C, to make up for yesterday's rain [which I actually enjoyed]:)
Just back from lunch with my dad at a superb pub, set in a converted old public school house, check out the pics: https://cholmondeleyarms.co.uk/
It won last year's Cheshire Life Food Awards. Very characterful old place with superb food, real ales (and proper scrumpy), plus 362 different types of gin!!:eek: Plus live music nights on Friday's, so might check that out.
Highly recommended if anyone here is in the area, and they also have rooms.... Less than 30 mins away from us though, which is handy. I'll be going back, next time with Del!:cool:

Thanks Steve. As has been said above, when the weather is kind it really is hard to beat the UK for beautiful scenery. Should be sunny and up to 24c again today, heading to Hunstanton.

Lots of pics, but mostly of the kids enjoying themselves, but will see what we have to post up when we get home. We have been constantly busy but yes, it is definitely “down time” as far as escaping from work and the stresses of the house move. Should be slightly cooler but still dry for the weekend. Off to Cromer tomorrow to the RNLI Museum and the pier. Diet will be needed when we get back!
No worries, mate. Whatever pics you can manage would be great. I've constructed a nice 'wee exercise' for you to burn off the flab!:eyebrows:

Monster rainstorm a couple of hours ago, the roads were like rivers. Sunny now but a bit breezy

Good guesses but all wrong, I went there for bog roll.
Also fitted a new front door and painted the front of the house. Or at least some blokes did whilst I sat inside watching TV. Have done a bit of hoovering though.
