I have one of these that I tend to wear around the garden and on holiday. Needless to say I don't look quite as fetching in it as some of those that are modelling them :-)

I can't be doing with hats, unless a) I'm on holiday in a really hot country and need to cover my head to avoid sunstroke, or b) I'm in a really cold country and need to wear a hat to avoid hypothermia. We went to Amsterdam for my 50th, it was the coldest I'd ever been and I really needed a warm hat, but could we find one? We could not.

I can't be doing with hats, unless a) I'm on holiday in a really hot country and need to cover my head to avoid sunstroke, or b) I'm in a really cold country and need to wear a hat to avoid hypothermia.
That's my view too. My wife's view on the other hand is that I look a knob in both my summer "straw stetson" and my winter "benny from Crossroads" beanie, so I guess I don't suit hats. Or I don't suit my wife. :confused:

yeah the stetson look is hard to pull off without looking a knob; well in this country anyway. Its odd as hats were even when i was growing up, worn by most men, although they faded out in late 60's

Our wives are obviously twins separated at birth. Wife to me: 'You'd better wear a hat, it's bitterly cold out there'. I put woolly hat on. Wife to me: 'You look really silly'.

over your side of pond they are called Derbys. Here they are bowlers(originally as the first made were by a firm called Bowler) Derby because they were originally for horseracing jockeys, and were worn at derbys etc.
A homburg is in between, then there is a trilby and the porkpie versions. Panamas of course, which really should be proper made from toquilla straw, and really should be called Ecuador hats as thats where they come from...
just some irrelevant facts lol.. not got a derby or homburg; nor a porkpie for that matter but do have trilbys

I am quite envious of guys who can look good in hats, but not when they are driving - there's something about hats that seem to make motorists into knobs, and that includes yoofs who drive wearing baseball caps.

Ya caught me! Actually, the picture of me on stage was a Halloween party. I paid good money for a long tailed tux jacket, “Derby”, and round glasses. As it turned out, all the girls wanted to pose for a picture with me! So I guess it was worth it.

A proper cowboy hat is hard to pull off, but I do see them around. As you go out west and down in Texas, they are far more fashionable. I see the very old John Wayne movies, and it strikes me funny that once upon a time, the bigger your hat, the cooler you were! A man walks in with a 10 gallon hat, and demands respect because he’s got the biggest hat in the room! I guess out on the lonesome prairie you have to live under that thing. Like a small tent you wear on your head? Cast shade on the horse too?
And baseball caps! Oh man, they are epidemic here, everyone, everywhere has one on, some wear forward, others wear backwards, and I honestly can’t help but laugh at the ones with the extra long bill! It’s like a standard uniform, every young man wears Levi jeans, a logo’d T shirt, and a baseball cap, honestly they all look the same, how does a girl choose?

When I was an apprentice, my boss used to take me with him when he was delivering packages of stationery to customers in his beige Austin 1300. He never spoke much, but the journeys were always er, eventful. The one line he spoke more than anything else, was "And you!" to other drivers.
He always drove in this trilby that was sort of a Tweedy look (I'm sure Grant will know the proper name for it).
Elgin drop brim tweed trilby. Used to be popular with men of a certain age. Mostly near middle class. Lol. Knew a few who owned one. Other similar was the camel coloured version

Are there still places one can go to get their hat boxed? (I don’t mean a liquor store)

Hats have been used a lot over the years in Soaps for some reason, probably helps to define their character or make their appearance more memorable.
Examples: Minnie Caldwell, Ena Sharples, Hilda Ogden, Seth Armstrong, Zac Dingle, Thora Birch. And Benny! Oh dear, I know more about this than is good for me :(

“Having your hat boxed”, means to have the creases steamed into it. All hats are just a round dome at first, then they place it in a steam press that puts the creases and dents in the right places, creates the shape of the hat.
So having your hat boxed meant going to the haberdasher where they would place your hat on a form and steam the shape into it. Sorry, I assumed we knew? But I guess it’s not something the average person does much of these days? I wonder if there are any shops who still perform this critical function?

Seems like I saw the process on tv, on an episode of “How it’s made”, they toured the Stetson factory. And they had different forms for different hats, a metal or wooden frame the shape of the finished hat, with many small holes in it, a top and bottom half. A big hinged top, with steam lines attached, they’d take the unfinished hat and place it over the bottom form, press down, just as pressing a shirt, Steam would come out, and voila, a perfectly creased hat!
So after you bought a hat that you wore every day, and it got bent, and people sat on it, rained on, etc, a trip to the hat shop was in order, to restore the shape of the hat. Or, so has been my understanding of the whole, “hat boxing”, thing.

I find that programme frustrating. The narrator Tony Hirst comes out with no end of technical inaccuracies. It may just be down to the script, but they should at least try and get somebody with a bit of technical knowhow reading things through.

I’ve noticed that too, but I’ve always thought that’s what the people who are making whatever they are reviewing told them? They can’t be an expert on everything, so they take the tour, the factory manager gives them the details, and they just repeat it. It’s amazing the people who run factories who have no technical background, the were promoted from operators, most often, and the people who designed the machines are back in Switzerland.

I just dont think I suit hats...yeah I wear a winter dome fleece on the bike but its a dress down affair.
I would like to look like Kid Creole but just think I would get my head kicked in for being too dressy :)

You need a proper hat stand in the far corner of the room, so when you come in you can throw the hat across the room frisbee-style. I've seen it done on telly many times :)
I would suggest a few dozen corks dangling around the brim would set them off nicely ��

Au contraire, I love 'em but I just can't wear 'em, the only style that doesn't look silly on me is a Bill and Ben flowerpot type! Hardly a suave look I fear ! ��
