Tweeter Damage!

My nipper has just pushed in the dome on one of my speaker's tweeters' It's not horrendous, but what's the best way to deal with this? Stick something sticky on it and pop it back out?

Pictures could be provided if needed.

If your clever you can apply presure near the dent and pop it out... Just don't blame me if it makes it worse :)

Yes that can work.You could also try a cardboard tube and see if it will suck out.Last resort is a bent pin pushed into the center of the dust cap and used to pull the dent out.Won't harm the performance as long as it's not a fluid-filled type.

Ok, here are a couple of pics.

Is it just a dust cap? Can I undo the tweeter surround and push it through from the other side? It's a Dynaudio Audience 42.

Looking at that you should be able to dismantle it and push it out from the back.

With all those Allen bolt heads it looks as though you can remove the dome and push it bach from the rear.

I think those allen bolts just free the whole Magnet/diafram from the faceplate, i could be wrong tho :)

All appears to be ok guys. I was gonna take off the surround, but didn't have the right allen key at first. Then I gently touched the dome and it moved. I gently rolled my finger from the outside towards the dent and it started to 'iron' out. I did this from a few angles and in the end the final dent popped out. There's a couple of extremely tiny, tiny, dents from it's most creased point, but other than that, it's perfect.

Better get the speaker covers back on I s'pose. Prefer them off though.

Hi Lee,

I've had a similar problem with a Tannoy tweater. I spoke with Tannoy teccies who at the time advised me not to dismantle unless absolutely necessary. They advised using gentle concentrated heat from a hair dryer nozzle. It did eventually pop back out without the creases and no evident damage to sound quality. I cannot guarentee this will work for you but it is worth a try before dismantling

Bet those creases will piss you off beyond belief it would me :( Your lucky my eldest shoved a BIC biro throught every unit in a pair of 5 ways speakers i once had...

I forgot you had 42's ... I was talking from experience of fixing mine that way!

Honestly, the dents/creases are miniscule. I wouldn't see them from more than 6 inches away. I'm being really picky just mentioning them actually.

Mines the same... Although I have a big crease in one o my woofers dust caps from where a mate chucked somthing that hit them... Poor things have been in the wars... Not that you would no on hearing them....

I have used a vacuum cleaner to get pushed in cones out.

As well as one stinking great dent in a bass cone, I've had my "avatar" do this twice now to one tweeter too, but I was able to massage them back fine (the tweeters, not the "avatar"!)

I now leave the covers on, but take them off for serious listening when she's not around - the funny thing is, the couple of times I've forgotten to put them back on, she now tries to do it for me, bless her! (Although my wife did tell me she managed to get one of them off the other day, so there's no guarantee there either!)

Glad you got it sorted though, Lee. Bloody kids, eh! (Mine also has found the volume control on the amp - I have to be VERY careful to check before I play anything as a couple of times it has been near or at maximum - now that would kill ALL my drivers!)

Just had my nephews and mother-in-law for a lunch at home. I was kind of scared of the kids, but the true horror was my mother-in-law. I didn't even have time to think about the grilles... For a second I was about to teach her to fly from my 4th floor. Until I ran into this thread, thank you!

Actually, all I did to solve was kiss it gently (tweeter, not the mother in law, mind you!). Just suck it out. Thankfully the Rega's use plastic dome tweeter, if it was paper or aluminum, it'd had to be replaced... Now, all is fine, but have to remember to keep grilles at all time during family meals.
