It lasted 60 odd years , 2 days cutting it up and a full on day burning it in 3 45 gallon drums ,

Thought the end was apt like a sinking ship going down , it gradually sank into the burning barrel :(

One bright side though , 1/2 ton led keel weigh in at £600 :) plus I removed all the brass bronze and copper fittings , port holes etc

Is that the way it's usually done? I think I just assumed boats either went on forever or sank. I'm really quite agog at such a sending off.

Yes with wooden boats thats how its done , If you know its rotten its very foolish to go to sea and sink putting life at risk

Yes, I imagine positive responses to "hey, my rotten old boat looks like it's ready to go down, who's coming out with me?" Would be rare :)

If you think that was a big job you need to visit the ship breaking yards in Chittagong in Bangladesh. These guys risk their lives breaking down and recycling every bit of huge ships. Nothing gets wasted. When I lived in Dhaka I would often go into the market where the recycled brass ship fittings would be sold. You could buy everything from sophisticated compasses to crude light fittings. It was fascinating to see the parts from all the naval shipyards in the world, including the brass nameplates and manufacturer marked pieces.

It certainly is, but it does make you think about our disposable culture in the West. What shocked me most living in Dhaka was how my domestic refuse would be picked over just after I had put it out, to "reclaim" anything that might be reused or sold on.

Yes but intensely more personal. Imagine coming back to your residence after work to see your waste carefully sorted on the ground into different categories waiting for it to be collected by cart. Notions of privacy are completely alien.
