Not totally unexpected, but perhaps a lot sooner than people thought, the new RPi4 is released:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-4-model-b/

Multiple upgrades seem to have answered most criticisms, with a choice of memory capacities, at not unreasonable prices.

I've a 4GB version ordered...

Brilliant.
Thanks for the heads up Paul.
I’m flying back from Greece tomorrow and so will order when I get home.
Be really interesting to see if there is any difference in SQ, especially with DigiOne

Cheers

What do you guys think the improvement will be (over a 3) when applying it to a hifi set up?

I read about that! I’m waiting to see just how it works out. I hate to be the first to do anything. But one thing is for sure, the prices of the 3 will drop! Seriously, I await to hear how it goes.

I was on the verge of jumping into the deep end, but now I’m inclined to wait, by the time I’m ready to jump in again, the 5 will come out.

I have read previously that the 3 provided better sq than the previous version (the 2 I guess?!)
All mine are earlier versions (2’s)so I should gain.
Now whether there is any difference between a 3 and the new 4 is another issue.

So would your accessory boards fit the 3? Can you just buy the 3, or even the 4, and add your existing cards and go? Because a new 3 isn’t expensive, and now that the 4 is out, it’s bound to get cheaper.

It’s a good question. I think so.
The 3 was compatible with the earlier version, and I saw this on Darko audio so I’m hoping that the same will apply for the 4 and the HATS I already have. Will find out soon.. the new pi has been dispatched.

I have scanned a few reviews and the upgrade looks very promising speed wise:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVA-WZWdEpY

Only downside i have found is that the changed port layout will mean 'old' enclosures are most likely redundant and will need modifying or replacing - bummer if you bought a posh aluminium one.
The ethernet port (for instance) has moved to the opposite side of the board which will mean making space for the higher usb set.

Not seen much yet about any IQ boost for audio though -I never really found much difference between RPi 2 type and the 3 model I had to be honest so not expecting much of a leap.
Also curious how much software upgrading the new model will require and whether the usual developers (Volumio, Moode, Roon etc) have already responded.

I've a 4GB version ordered...

RPi4 received to day in France, so good service from Pimoroni. However, upon opening the Jiffy bag, one end of the box has been crushed. On opening the box, the display adaptor has broken, and the metal casing around the SD card is crushed so that I cannot insert an SD card.

Not impressed, quite frustrated; will see how Pimoroni respond and resolve the situation.

Mine arrived.
Can I get anything to play on it?
Can I buggery.

Every other pi I’ve had it’s fairly straightforward.
Format the SD card and then load an image file...and voila after a bit of setting up.
Nothing so far though

You may be jumping the gun a bit. Which image file exactly did you load? The Moode version that's compatible with RPi4 hasn't been released yet, and the situation may be the same with the other distros.

Think you are right Jonners.
I’ll go and load noobs and see how well audirvava picks it up as upnp.

As I use a Raspberry Pi 3+ as an LMS Server I have high hopes that the Pi 4 with 4 GB of Ram will offer me a smoother and quicker experience . As far as I know and it does seem to be a little muddy at the moment any add on Hats such as Digi or DAC hats will not be fully compatible as the new Pi has a very different CPU and will not be fully compatable with items set up for the old CPU . However this does appear to be disputed by some users who have early boards but the HAT mfg companies are being cautious and saying there may be issues.

Yeah, I think it will be a while before the various softwares are updated for the 4, as well as old hats being confirmed as fully usable. Bound to be a few issues as there are so many third party accessories out there.

If any of you have already recieved your Pi 4 please be aware that there is a known issue of overheating of the unit when it is working hard . Idle temperature is around 66 Deg and throttling of the CPU occurs around 80 Deg plus .

There is a firmware update due in the next few days which will lower the idling temperature and offer a little more head room but suspect either a fan or heat sink may be need if you are pushing the Pi 4 .

In case you have not seen Max2play - www.max2play.com have announced a Beta download for the Raspberry Pi 4 . This is the software and interface I use for my LMS server loadings as it makes things very easy . I have downloaded the image and flashed it to my Raspberry Pi 4 4GB unit . I decided to build the LMS and all the settings on the Pi without connecting it up to any players before inserting this new Pi for my current Raspberry Pi3 + which has been doing the LMS service for about the last year or so.

Complete set up including rescanning my large library and adding in all the plug ins on LMS that I use and removing those i do not was about thirty five minutes . However it is now playing music while I type this (Eric Bibb - Strong Love at the moment) and the sound is if anything more solid and stable and easier to listen to than before but i accept that is a very subjective view.

What is not in doubt is the increase in speed and smoothnes you now get for any updates instructions and requests you put in to LMS . Early days yet but I have to say considering this is a Beta and so likely to show up with issues I have yet to find any problems in fact the reverse LMS has become a much nicer thing to use due to the faster response. I have tried a few pluins such as Material Skin , Radio Paradise , BBC iPlayer and they all work as they should.

To get advance functions you need to bu a licence for max2play but it will load and work LMS without any licence so you can use it for free and it will work just fine .

Thanks for this Andrew
I’ll give it a try.
Spent quite a while this morning just trying to get something to work (noobs, librelec etc)
Suspect it’s a dodgy SD card. Frustrating though.

Cheers
Steve

I was a long term user of max2play but the license approach made me switch to piecoreplayer. If you don’t have an active licence you can’t for instance make the file system rewritable if you had previously installed the SD card protection feature. So if you wanted to tweak settings or upgrade you where required to buy a licence.

It's just the way of it..these things have to be paid for somehow. If advertising won't do it,then charging will happen.
I got used to streaming tidal and quboz with volumio, but with the latest versions I have to pay for that. Which is frustrating in that I stream via audirvana, which I've also already paid for.
hey ho.

Appreciate that to get the best from Max2play you need to buy a licence but in my view it is not really that expensive. As I mainly use it for LMS server duty only (all my players are Picore or Squeezelite) I could just stop paying and use the LMS loaded on the SD card. However for the work Heiner does and the ease of the add ons etc it is well worth the small fee in my view.

The again I give donations to Picore and Radio Paradise because I use them and appreciate the work that goes in to making them enjoyable software . Others use it and never donate which is fine whatever your feelings tell you is right.

Yes but no but ...I’m happy to donate to pcp but I’m not going to be constrained by a licence model that excludes me from using a feature I’ve already paid for.

YES!!
Thought I might as well check out moode.
Given up on the latest Volumio because I can’t stream Audirvava via upnp without more money being exchanged.
Anyway.. not overly enthused because I’d gone off moode when it seemed you had to learn to code with it.
No more! Image below works brilliantly with Pi 4 and my IOaudiO digi+
Plugged my chord mojo in, and played with the settings..sounds brilliant.
Best yet..loads of separation and sound stage.
Thank you Tim.. donation on its way.

Absolutely zero. My Pi 3B runs under 5% CPU load when streaming via its DigiOne HAT.

^^^^ This, in fact given the reports on underclocking of the 3b there’s an argument an underclocked 2b has the potential to be better still...

The Pi 4 does look like the first one that could be an acceptable budget PC or laptop replacement though. A lot more power under the hood.

Oh man... the temptation of free tweaks. I think the 2B is a mite underpowered, especially as I’ve found my 3B sluggish with Moode sometimes, so switched to DietPi.

I’ll give it a whirl, but blind. The onboard regs would be stressed less, also potentially less EMI from the SMPS due to lower power draw. Can’t see it making a difference except for loss of responsiveness and perhaps increased reliability.

Well have now been running LMS via Max2play for about two weeks or so and I have to say the Pi4 has performed flawlessly . No buffering or CPU throttling . Sound and connection right around the house and in to all my players has been rock solid .

Response times are much improved as are the speeds to update LMS to nightly 7.9.2 versions . I am very impressed with the quality and solidity the Pi4 brings . I would now certainly say that the user experience is as good as many built and very much more expensive streamers .

I have used all the versions of the Pi over many years and liked all of them and seriously marvelled at the price compared to performance. However although I recomended them many times I always felt I had to make any potential user aware of the speed of response which was behind most streamers on the market. With the Pi4 I do not have any such doubts , it is quick and smooth and feels like a fully professional product in user response. Given that the Max2play download is still a beta version the lack of any issues or dramas is for very impressive I think Heiner has done a great job .

No doubt there will be more to get out of this version and given time the really experienced and talented sould that understand both the hardware and software will wring out even more performance . I will certainly keep my eye on progress and add updates when needed ,but this is more tahn good enough now to be a very impressive little unit that just quietly unseen gets on with letting me hear what i want when I want where I want .
