Decided to sell my long term project on cars and classics yesterday.
Got an email from someone asking about the price and what was the minimum I would take for it - so replied with a figure.
Received this today:

Thanks for the mail..However,I want you to know that the price is okay by me and as for picking it up that will not be a problem..I will contact an agent that will handle the pick up...So that will not be a problem.... As for the payment I will be paying with Cashier's Check which will be cashed easily...I want you to know that I will be adding shipping money for the Cashier's Check you are going to receive in which you will deduct your money(agreed selling price) and send the remaining balance to the agent that will be coming for the pick up at your place,to send it out I will need your full name and address where the Cashier's Check will be sent to and your phone number...Listed bellow:
1. The full name on the Cashier's Check
2. Mailing Address to send the Cashier's Check
3. Contact phone number.
PS:I will want you to kindly put SOLD on the advert from the placing site..okay, or any interested buyer that mail you,just let them know that it has been sold,so for doing that I will be willing to compensate you with $100.

So i called HMRC and they do not send texts, so called back the number from text and wasted their time for half an hour.
The guy ended up threatening me and my family and a lot worse after the time i kept him on the phone.

I had call from 'HMRC' on Friday, recorded message saying I owed them money or some such nonsense. I know a few people who have had it.
if these folk had an ounce of morality in them they would be very ashamed. alas they have none. they should be hunted down.

We’ve had a few of these get through to our branch offices - I always tell people to ask them to confirm our BT account number, which will always result in the line going dead!

I mean if we were talking about a big robbery or something, like tunnelling into a bank vault, then fair enough. If it works then you're on a beach earning ten percent for the rest of your life. But these petty bunco scams, what a huge waste of time and effort for such little potential reward.

well many folk are easy to scam. My son, who has some mental health issues and learning issues etc is fairly easy. I have to prime him regularly in what to do and say as he doesnt handle it well. its part of his illness. many old folk are too trusting too.
True but think how many calls they have to make to hit on a soft target. And all the abuse they must get from all the other marks who don't fall for it? It's not easy money by any stretch of the imagination.

The other day I had a scam call from Talktalk telling me that my router had errors, I said can I stop you there, I'm Father Christmas, and I need to tend to my reindeer urgently, strangely, she cut me off!.
I frequently receive calls from "you were involved in an accident recently". I answer......was I ...oh my lord.....was I injured am I going to recover ok. Mostly they hang up by now, but a couple have gone on for a while and I start asking how much compensation am I going to receive and what shall I spend it on. I do pretty much the same with the PPI cold callers. Don't get mad with them, have a bit fun, and if you are in company, put it on speaker phone.

A few years ago there was a news report of a robbery at a building society or something, where they tunnelled into the place. The tunnelling took several weeks, and when they finally got to the loot, it was later estimated that for these three blokes digging for all those man hours, they were on less than minimum wage.

Around here of late, we’ve had a rash of calls saying that our car warranty has expired. And at the same time, Other calls that the car insurance has lapsed. So when we see a number we don’t know we don’t answer. But they just keep calling!
So, I answer the phone, some women who’s English is so bad I can barely understand her, is going on and on about how my warranty has expired, and I am shouting over her, “I do not own a car!”, and she then asks, “well, if I could just get your information”, and I ask what information?, I have no car!” She hangs up. I do this with about 4 other daily callers, same conversation each time. And I’m happy to say it’s been a month, and I have not had one such call. Until they dream up the next scam!
I wish I had a button that I could push and make their phone blow up! Why the phone company and the law allow this to continue is telling. They are not some far off gangsters in India, they are working in cahoots with the phone company!

He'd let them say their piece, then say 'I'm too busy to talk right now. Give me your home number and I'll call you back'. They'd invariably say they didn't want to be contacted at home, to which he'd reply 'Neither do I. Now fuck off and don't call me again.'

I've done the call blocking on occasions, but it only stops that particular number. It had little effect on the number of unwanted calls I received. I'm guessing the person on the next desk over has a slightly different number to the one I blocked. Honestly, it's like playing Whack-a-Mole, but without the satisfaction of actually smacking the waste of space over the head.
The one we've got blocks the lot; essentially the system asks callers to identify themselves before putting the call through. All we see is a list of numbers that have called us. But we're not dependent on the phone for business, so it doesn't much matter to us if a genuine caller gets blocked by mistake.

thats the one my brother has. its a pain as ive got to wait too. not sure if you can green light certain numbers or not. he is a technophobe so he wont know

It's not a 'queue' as such; the system asks them to identify themselves, the call gets put through, and we're prompted to accept or reject the call. I expect there's a way of automatically allowing family's/friends' numbers through without challenge, but I've mislaid the manual and no-one seems to mind identifying themselves.
Mmm... If that works for you, then fine, but I wouldn't want to inconvenience folks like that. I suspect you don't get many calls... As an example, my dad can call me half a dozen times a day, for various things, and it would piss him off big time if he had to continually go through that pish.
And you don't need an instruction manual to sort it, Google for the relevant info, which I'm sure will be out there, and fix it, but you probably can't be arsed!:ner:;)

The one that cheeses me off is these dodgy debt collection companies phoning and messaging the mobile for some ficticious name. Real name or not, its got nothing to do with me and it was a brand new sim card unless they are recycling numbers.
I just send them to call and message blocking as you can block key words. They have a bank of phone numbers and I just block them as they change.
Really the police should be involved with practices like that as I believe they are UK based
Not enough is done to catch and deter scammers. Its a tough one of they are abroad but this sort of criminal behavior should be matched by real punishments. The trouble is I seem to be writing empty words as the scammers dont care and nobody seems bothered about stopping them

Well they can actually do alright which is very worrying. Ive heard there are whole scam areas that are doing very nicely from their ill gotten gains....then the next lot hear about the loot and so it goes on.
Its not really hard work to scam someone out of their life savings?...If they get 1% of people its easy money. They can sound believable but I have to say that the people that fall for the gold delivery scams do worry me with their naivety and greed. Maybe thats a harsh statement but its all part of the ongoing problem.
It seems schoolboy stuff but to be fair if they catch people at a vunerable moment it can all come over as very believable
Until there is effective worldwide policing and deterrents, it will unfortnately continue. If anything it seems to be getting worse

Lazy policing - tracking down and dealing with scammers is too much like hard work. The only reason so many speeding motorists get caught is because the police have cameras to do the work for them
Actually I know it's not all about laziness, it's more about allocating resources to where it is felt they are most needed. About time the powers that be recognise how serious a problem scammers and cybercrime has become.
Problem lies in that cyber crimes cross or should I say bypass state borders and hence laws.
Ie if your in India, do your crimes outside India and your pretty safe etc.

Not apparent in the picture, but it wasn't sinking, it was actually climbing out. Certainly did leave a 'Biz-mark' on the porcelain though.
That looks like one on my Monday jobbies - I give my arse the day off every Sunday, which does result in a bit of a 'backlog'.
Am I right in thinking that fabulously solid specimen popped out in a 'oner', without snapping in half as usual? If so, that new high-fibre diet of yours must be working!:D

As I said in my earlier post, the phone company is allowing this to happen. They are making money off of these calls. They could stop it overnight if they wanted, and the phone company has influence in the government, so the cops don’t interfere.
A friend I spoke to the other day told me when he gets such a call, he picks up the phone and barks, “This is General Wilson in the Pentagon War Room! State your business!”, and they hang up every time! And don’t call back.

Ha - that would be great, but not how it works if he forgets to mention something he wanted to discuss, or something new crops up, such as recently his Sky box crashing, so I had to nip over and sort it. There are all sorts of reasons why he would call me...
Del too, from work, if there's something she wants to discuss out with of an email. I could think of plenty of other examples too, of regular callers to our landline who we wouldn't want to continually inconvenience by having to go through a 'verification system'.

Sounds like you're his 'go to' guy for everything, as he would have been for you when you were little, and that's a good thing :) Also some of the calls may just be an excuse for a chat! Make the most of it, you only get one dad.
Exactly, mate... And also *exactly* as it should be [the relationship between a father and son] - and like you say, you repay your parents when they're old, for looking after you so well when you were young:)
That's a normal thing for me (and my family, including Del's), but sadly these days a dying trait... Stick your old folks in a home, when they become 'too much bother', or neglect them long before then as you're 'too busy' with your own life, is the more likely thing:(

To be close to us, is why my dad moved down from Scotland with my mum (who's sadly passed away since), to live just 5 mins away. And yes, 'just for a chat' is a primo reason for him having a phone and calling me, which is another rather enjoyable/nice 'human' experience that online social media has sadly all but killed!:rolleyes:

When they tell me ‘our records show’ etc, I usually say, you’re lying to me, why are you lying to me, tell me more about these so called records?

Some hilarious comments on this thread, I've had quite a lot of phone calls recently from dubious sources, claiming to be either BT or Talk Talk stating that my Internet will shortly be terminated or my computer has a virus and some even claimed my router had virus also.
I'm thinking these clowns must be getting some success at this, some vulnerable people out there alas.

The scammers have been filmed on their webcams by you tubers and addresses have been given to the local indian police but nothing seems to be done about it.
Thats the problem with these foreign economies. I get the feeling that the police are in on it for a bung, dont you?
Ive been scammed directly to my face in the UK though so I had a real wakeup call in the 1980s. I dont trust anyone now which is sad. I dont trust garages, car stereo fitting places and most shops. The result of scammers is I now spend quarter of an hour examining factory seals on boxes to the disgruntled looks on the retail workers faces. I get written quotes from the top dog.
I dont trust tradesmen as far as I can throw them...I do the work myself whenever possible and thats most times.
I dont think I can easily get scammed now although Ive recently been employed by someone who screwed me over from the word go.
Just had "Microsoft" call me as my computer has been hacked. Acted all shocked and concerned. Kept him going for 10 minutes faffing around asking stupid questions before asking him why he was calling me from Microsoft when the only computer I have is an Apple Mac. He muttered something angrily in Indian before hanging up on me! :lol:
My dad often used to answer the phone to unknown numbers as "Wongs Chinese, can I take your order prease?" or "Hello you've reached 999, which service do you require?" He stopped the last one, when the voice at the other end said "Interesting, this is Norfolk Constabulary and we are ringing you about your recently reported crime..." :lol: And then gave him a rather stern warning! (You can tell how long ago it must have been to get a call from a real cop!)

If you treat the telephone as a nuisance as I do, it needs a giant caller display where only approved numbers ring. This could be set with a filtering system of anti telesales warning messages so genuine callers can leave a message and then get through when cleared. Point is you can check and skip those messages at your convenience so as not be disturbed
All home phones should be like this with minimal cost from the phone companies. There is no reason for anyone else to be ringing anyway. I cant think of many reasons for strangers to legitimately call.
So I would preset it with the girlfriends number, a couple of friends and my parents.
For anyone else it just doesnt ring because there is nothing strange I want to know about by telephone.....Nothing!
There seems plenty of people that want to chat with anybody that rings up...Thats their lookout and I thought they would have had more sense in this cynical world. If a ringing telephone is the highlight of your day, youve got real problems :)

The problem with caller ID is it doesn’t work! Anyone who doesn’t want their number posted can become an “unknown caller”, but now there are web sites you can call through, and they allow you to put anything you like on the caller ID, they fake a number that’s local to you, but they’re really out of the country. A real waste of a great technology. The phone company should allow no exceptions, if you call someone, your actual ID must appear on their caller ID screen! But, they are the ones who actually allow people to skirt around the system, now, the way it is, the caller ID is nearly worthless.

No its not brilliant but one would set it to reject everything unless the number has been green lighted previously. No number or an unrecognised number would not even ring
A message would then play saying telesales, unusual or unwanted calls are not welcome here and to leave a message or press a series of buttons if need to get through now. They have then got seconds to be recognised/considered important or my phone goes straight back down.
Like with my mobile. If I see an unrecognised number I dont answer it. I dont care if its the prime minister...I dont answer it
So I am saying people can protect themselves but many people are too lazy or wont pay for a blocking system.
I have no idea how we protect the elderly and vunerable unless a family member is helping....That said my parents would never want that help even if they were going senile.

I do pretty much the same with the PPI cold callers. Don't get mad with them, have a bit fun, and if you are in company, put it on speaker phone.
The personal injury claim people are getting clever by browsing Gumtree for sale ads for cars with minor accident damage then calling the seller, they can then quote the make and model of the car they were driving when they had the accident along with a description of the damage.
I usually tell them (when I'm feeling polite), that yes, I was recently involved in an accident, which was fatal, and so they're now talking to a ghost.

I used to play along for fun with the scammers, the indian gentleman from Microsoft (of course you are) once rang to tell me there was 'junk' on my computer, I told him I don't have any chinese boats.
These days if I don't recognise the number calling or it's withheld I just let it go to the answering machine, if it's a genuine caller they'll leave a message.

I use 'should I answer' app on my mobile, on landline if I don't recognize number I pick up but don't say anything, of it's a dodgy one then usually it just times out.

When I get a nuisance caller on my mobile, there is always 2 or 3 seconds of 'dead air' before I get the office background noise, followed by 'hello is this Mr Stevan Calligan'. I no longer get to that point, I hang up when I hear the dead air.
Dead air? If that similar to what's between your ears? Or is that stale air?:D

Usually I know if its a nuisance call as for some reason they as me if I am Eleanor Laing. That usually gives it away...

No, the air in my head is constantly refreshed, the wind blows in one ear and out the other. But I have to get my ears syringed regularly to maintain the through-draught, especially before flying anywhere. Have you ever seen what happens to a bag of crisps while on a plane? My head does that and it's really painful :(
