Deep Purple Made in Japan and King Crimson USA, the musicianship is just outstanding on USA - not everyone's cup of coffee but for me, both are essential albums
showing just how exciting live concerts could be, in the 1970's

:goodthread: Nice one, Alan. Sadly, I only own one of the albums mentioned so far... :sofa:
Hard to decide what is an "essential" album, so many to chose from, and I guess the definition of "essential" needs to transcend niches and personal tastes. The one for me that would immediately spring to mind, as I have listened to it since a small kid as one of my Mum's favourites -
Queen - A Night at the Opera (1975)

Drake! You must be joking - it's not 1st April you know!
I don't own any Deep Purple, Santana or Tom Waits and have no plans to change that situation.
However, I wouldn't be without a copy of Eno's HCtWJ's - is it an essential though - more so that Another Green World?
On the other hand, yes to Hunky Dory, I think that really is an 'essential'.

You obviously don't hear great music as we do!;)
Drake, he can't even talk in tune with the auto-tune turned up to maximum - utterly talentless!
Never mind all that nonsense. What's really essential:
The Beatles: Revolver; The Beatles (the White Album)
(Iggy &) The Stooges: The Stooges, Fun House, Raw Power
The Velvet Underground: The Velvet Underground & Nico; White Light/White Heat; The Velvet Underground; Loaded; Live 1969
Neil Young: Tonight's The Night
The New York Dolls: The New York Dolls
The Ramones: The Ramones; The Ramones Leave Home
Patti Smith: Horses
Plus everything by Half Man Half Biscuit except 'Some Call It Godcore'.

Here is another one that you really should have, good old rock 'n' boogie. I saw them live in 1976 at Reading Festival, unbelievably good, the whole place just danced at 4:00 in the afternoon for 1.5 hours, just amazing, then followed by a young Aerosmith if I remember rightly, I had had a few. Overall the Doobies sold over 40 million units (albums) worldwide throughout their career. I am missing their first eponymous album and 5 others but have most from 72-89.

But strike me down, I ain't heard it since I wore flares & platforms.
Essential indeed.
It’s very weird, I’ve got circa 2K albums, yet I don’t own the majority of these ‘essentials’ ;).
I nominate Dead Can Dance ‘Aion’:

Be hard to pick one as they're all good. But if I was made to it'd have to be 'Aja'.
It's almost impossible but I would have to say 'Countdown To Ecstasy' because it has 'My Old School' on it. But then thinking about it 'Greatest Hits' has 'Here At The Western World' too. Which is their best song. And that's not on any of the proper albums, it's only on 'Hits and 'Gold'. So I'd have to say 'Greatest Hits'.

All of these are essential Pink Floyd!
But the one I seem to play the most is Animals

Not sure why but even though I like Animals and have it, I never considered it one of their better outings.[emoji848]

Electric Warrior, my first ever album purchase (the first single I bought was Telegram Sam). Paid £2.10 for it. I bought it again a couple of years ago, hadn't heard it in about 45 years. Nice pressing, and very clean production, thanks to Mr Visconti. I expected to play it once or twice for the sake of nostalgia, but no, it gets played regularly. Also bought 'The Slider', but I didn't connect with it the same way.

I spent lots of time spinning Meddle and Wish You Were Here, and of course Dark Side and the Wall, I guess I’m kind of played out on those? So now Animals has gained top spot at this point. In 5 years I expect things will be different and one of the others will assume my top Floyd position? But don’t sell Animals short, there’s some good stuff in those grooves. It never did get much recognition, I’ve had several people tell me they’ve never even heard of it.

This is one of my all time favourite albums the I have owned on cassette, CD and LP since the early 70's, and IMO is an essential.
Simply put it is Steppenwolf's protest album against the Vietnam War, but every track has something to offer. Steppenwolf IMO opinion are often overlooked, always remembered for 'Born to be Wild' from their 1st album, but there is much more to them than that. They are probably one of the first bands to combine a heavy rock feel with harmony, thundering guitar lines intertwined with melody which lead back to the lyrics, and a driving rhythm section, if you listen to this album there are several tracks that sound like the Byrds in some ways but are much edgier. Then pulling it all together there is John Kays superb rasping vocal coming across it all.
Have a listen and enjoy.
