You're right, it does look familiar.
The opening titles of a 1980s game show or comedy? I'm thinking '321' or 'Bob's Full House'. Something like that, anyway. Could be an album cover from the same era.

My other thoughts were opening sequence of top of the pops in the mid 80s, early Now That's What I Call music albums and something along the lines of Colonel Abrams Trapped or a David Bowie 80s album but it's not that. Still veering towards hifi world if anyone has the late 80s/early 90s ones and can check.

Just been through all my vinyl albums and 12" singles (which contains a lot of 80's tat...) but no joy. Will do the 7" singles later. This is really winding me up!
something by Stock Aitken and Waterman.

Well, that's definitely the design, so a mighty well done for finding it. But something tells me that's not the usage of it we are looking for, I can't believe we have all seen that skateboard in the past.

I agree Rich - if you look at the top right of your image there's a white section - like the edge of a background for text - which isn't on the skateboard, and agreed, I don't recall seeing that board before. The search continues!

I noticed the edge of the white section, I thought it looked like a more crisp graphic though, like a text box on a paused screen. I might very well be wrong though.

An album seems like a good suggestion, I can easily see it being part of some cover art. But this is a forum full of music lovers, wouldn't someone have recognised it if that were the case?
I think I've looked at it so much and pictured it being from all sorts of different TV shows and LP covers that I've gone snow blind :)

Reckon you're right RE the album cover, all the vinyl lovers I know study the covers compulsively whilst listening, so the mystery would have been solved very quickly.
I'm reasonably sure, after being out for a bike ride and not thinking about this at all, that I have, at one point, had a birthday card with this pattern on.
The amp, unfortunately, is a tad lean and clean for my tastes, but its a powerful wee thing, 200w out of something not much bigger than a fag packet, thanks for asking, only cost me 33 quid and it will do as a standby.

The original from the first post is most definitely taken from an image of the same model Rocket skateboard you found (also available on eBay and elsewhere) - example (https://www.freestylextreme.com/uk/home/brands/rocket/rocket-multi-distinct-series-retro---7.75-inch-skateboard-complete.aspx?prodid=381172&gclid=EAIaIQobChMInMHW8LzJ4gIVGLLtCh0SkQYCEAQYAyAB EgKOC_D_BwE)
if you look at the original image you can see a dark shape at the bottom which corresponds exactly with the axle mount on the skateboard and also the triangle shapes along the relevant edge match exactly in relation to it.
I've compared them using Photoshop and there is absolutely no doubt.
The only reason people are so confused about this is because the pattern is so similar to zillions of Memphis based patterns in circulation and used ad nauseam since the mid 80s (as has been pointed out)
The original from this thread is on the left - the one on the right from a dealer image (rotated to match)

Good work. There's no doubt it's a match. When Martin posted the pic of the skateboard I made the assumption the design of the board was taken from the same source that we were all trying to recall. I still have some suspicions that there is an original use of the design, but the fact that it has not yet been found does cast a lot of doubt.
I still haven't had the 'oohh yeah, that's were I've seen it' epiphany that I was expecting.

I sometimes wonder who's behind them all, maybe anti capitalists or N Korea or Russia trying to distract people and decrease western productivity or slow down the internet. The pattern could be a generic "Memphis" one that most people feel like they've seen in the past and the 90s would be a good decade to pick to catch the people who are theoretically adding more value later in their career.

Well, based upon what we have seen I have come to the following conclusion. The only actual known occurance of the design is the skateboard, I presume someone somewhere saw the skateboard and couldn't recall where they had previously seen it, so they took the pic and started sharing it to see if anyone could tell them. It spread, as things so readily do these days, with each of us having the same reaction to it, we definitely know it but just can't recall from where or what. The design is generic enough for us to be certain we are familiar with it, without it leading us to a specific product or use.
I am still hopeful that someone will be along to tell us exactly which album cover/TV show we know it from, but I'm now less inclined to believe that will happen than I was on my first post.
Thanks to everyone for helping, sorry if I gave you an itch that couldn't be scratched :)

Was thinking it was 'Let's Dance'.....
Certainly from that period.
Unfortunately I've shed all my vinyl.
I'm also convinced that it is either an album or 12" cover that I have!!!! I had a brief look earlier, but then Mrs Puffin called me in for me tea.....and you don't mess wiv me missus (for a mental picture think Peggy Mount:eek:) I seem to think that it is a Whitney Houston 12" sleeve. I am of course completely gaga and it will probably turn out that I don't have it at all!
I'm also convinced that it is either an album or 12" cover that I have!!!!
Me too, but went through all albums/12"'s yesterday and no luck... Spent hours googling "Memphis Style" and 80s/90s album covers, and came up with nothing. I thought I'd got it out of my system today as spent a lovely day away from the internet with the family. Now I'm starting to get the shakes and NEED to know the answer! Im pretty sure Ive seen the design on an record cover from the 80s or 90s. Perhaps mostly that design with the bands picture in the corner. sort of design you would see on a smash hits inner double cover but I just think Ive seen it used on the cover of something we should recognise...you know its got that sort of electric boogaloo design and Ive defo seen something like it.
We have photo memories for images even if we cant immediately place them
Why do I think Ive seen it before and why is it on that skateboard? Its a generic design which is quite funky in its own way
Im not going to lose sleep over it though :)

From a graphic design point of view.
It's a very generic and nonspecific 80's design unfortunately. I think the style was called 'Memphis'.
It's that art deco/geometric abstract, vector, drop shadow crossover style which the mid to late 80's took on board. You found this on covers of note pads, calendars and backgrounds for offers etc. Even clothing, carpets and wall paper.
It crossed over in to the 90's too and was used with some US rap/soul artists.

It just reminds me of everything 1980s. But nothing specific, at least not that holds up to scrutiny.
I'm sure we would have found it by now if it had been used somewhere. I can't believe there is absolutely no sign of it.
Now I'm thinking 'Miami Vice.'

I watched the opening credits to that, no luck though unfortunately.

Biffo is along the right lines. Exactly that design has been on a record cover. Its a question of what also ran record is worth referencing.
Ive seen that design and know its been on a cover. Im thinking not an important record but really why are we wasting time on this as I doubt anyone will get it unless you collect things like bananarama singles

“Saved By The Bell” - the TV Show intro seems like possible candidate?

That's a very popular suggestion, but unfortunately not the answer.

Ok point taken but its a valid comment to say its a wild goose chase. That design instantly rang a bell but something can get in your head thats a waste of time trying to pin down.
Post the answer in several years time I and will think meh that was really worth the effort wasnt it :)

It's just a bit of fun trivia....a brain storm...everybody seems to recognize the image, but can't pinpoint it..It's driving everyone nuts, including me.. which I think is quite amusing...I sat here approx 3 weeks ago and was sitting looking at the design, can I hell think what it was on, but I'd put my last fiver on it, that it's a record cover/inner sleeve or cd cover....I've looked through my 800 strong vinyl collection and near 1500 cd's, even digging out the cd's I have boxed and put away and still can't find it...It's not online anywhere, though I did come across that Skateboard. I've stoped looking now, but it will find me again..It's more of an annoying little niggle now..but it is definitely on something other than the skateboard. that I am positive of...I wish it could be put to bed...and yes Martin..a wild goose chase indeed....atb...Al...;)

So you have posted on a thread to say that the thread is not worth posting on? Isn't that just thread crapping?
Why not do what the rest of us do and just ignore threads you don't want to get involved with. It's just a bit of fun, and some of us are enjoying the mystery.
Ok, settle down folks. Most threads make little point to someone, it dont mean they dont make a point to someone....
