Following on from recently building a model of HMS Belfast which I really enjoyed doing I've been revisiting kit building. After music, motorbikes took up much of my younger days. I've not had a bike for a few years now due to poor health but they still do " it " for me. I've managed to find kits for some of the bikes I've had in the past so set to work on them. So far I've made a Suzuki 1100 Katana, Honda CB750F, Honda CB400Four, Yamaha XJR1300, Honda CB900F and a Yamaha RD350LC. Awesome work there Ian! I've always hankered after a CB400 as it was one of my favourite Matchbox models as a kid! And an 1100 Katana - sweet! Love how you've done the reg plates too - top job fella!

I really like my one, great on a country lane but lacking any real grunt. Talking of grunt the XJR 1300 was fantastic, Brunnelian gobs of power. I still have a soft spot for the old CB900F, not very refined but terrific fun. It was described in a magazine once as an ugly, heavy dangerous brute, a cheap way of going very fast.....sounds about right

Those little bikes look awesome.. I only once made up a bike model, a BMW K Series, the real thing was owned by Colin. I rode it once and thought it was rubbish but the model was quite nice..;)
My favourite bike was the Honda Hornet, I had two of them at different times and they were a hoot... for 'character' though it had to be the Moto Guzzi...

I don't like any of the BMW's to be honest, comfortable yes, mile muncher as you say...yes... but so boring I reckon...
I'd quite like to try the old Honda NS400R two stroke as they are supposed to be really fun and they are small enough for my short leggies...

The latest additions to Ian's tiny bike shop. The Kawasaki GPZ550 was great fun and very nippy and the Kawasaki Z750 was just a proper muscle bike. It's getting harder to find kits for bikes I've had now so I think it will be bikes I wish I'd had next. By the way the GPZ says 400 on the side panels but I had a 550. Thanks Alex, I really enjoy making them and it's good therapy for my fists of ham and sausage fingers lol. My brother had a Honda CB250 when I was a kid and I did exactly the same as you with the brooooom brooooom thing, I think that's where my love of bikes stems from.
Decided to open a cafe racer department at the mini bike shop. Brilliant as always Ian. When will you run out of room to keep them? My 1:1 scale Kawasaki Ninja ZX6-R F3 left the garage on a trailer today... off to be brought back to life and recommissioned after 10 years sat feeling sorry for itself. Do they do a model of it do you know?

I like the ZX6, as competent as the CBR600 but with a bit more focus. Excellent work! That is some fine model making! I am very impressed. I tinkered with Model railroading for a number of years, and I am aware of just how hard it is to keep the realism up.
You should make you a fake piece of driveway. Take some black sandpaper and glue it to a board. Take the models out into the yard, and position your camera so that they look as though they are full sized and setting in the driveway! The photography adds a whole new dimension to model making, and it’s fun to fool people online. As real as your models look sitting on the desk, I know they’d look amazing with the right camera angle, looking full sized!

Thanks Russell, it's great therapy for me both physically and mentally. I quite fancy the idea of model trains but I don't really have the space for a good layout. I like your idea for a setting for photos, I will have a play with some settings.

I’m getting there. A friend came around today and we played a few songs on guitar! So, I’m slowly on the mend.
I was confined to my room due to illness for 6 years or so, that was over 6 years ago now. But the model trains and the art of modeling helped keep my sanity. I got into it because of the computer control, you’d be shocked at all the circuits made for trains these days. But, once I got into it, I found I enjoyed the modeling the most. Another small thing you may want to add to your motorcycle models is weathering. To add realism, there are many methods to “weather”, your projects, a bit of dirt, a touch of rust, making the rubber on the tires look worn. It takes a delicate touch to make it realistic.
And I’m sure there are YouTube videos on the art of photographing models, to make them look real. I had a digital camera with a macro setting, that made my small scenes look realistic, I read an article in a magazine about this man who took a board with a length of track with fake dirt and grass, setting on saw horses, and he set it up so the train appeared to be setting on a hill in the distance. And it was so real! He was actually getting paid by the model companies to make these photos, to advertise their products.
The trick to model railroading is not how much space you have, just get a smaller gauge to fit your space. I chose N scale, which I could turn around in 24”, an HO takes 48”, and a Z scale only takes 13” to turn around. You could literally put a Z scale town and track on the coffee table.

Thanks Russell, they vary in the amount of components but generally it's somewhere between 2 to 5 hundred parts. I've been investigating your ideas for some interesting photo scenes and once I've changed the cartridge in my printer I'm going to create some diorama type scenery. Also I've been teaching myself painting techniques and I'm going to invest in an air brush. I'll try not to respray the cat lol.

I’ve got several air brushes, a cheap single stage is good for spraying models, and is easy to clean. A decent air supply is needed, I’ve got one of those small compressors that are made for airbrushes, and it works fine for such work. You don’t need to spend a fortune to do decent work. However! I recently bought a $240 Iwata gravity feed brush, to do fine line work, and spraying skull stencils. There are cheaper gravity feed brushes, but somehow they just don’t have the control of the Iwata. But, a $15 single stage with the glass jar under it does wonders for model work, and spraying even coats on larger surfaces.
Lacquer paint sprays very well, it’s nice and thin, and goes on even. But it’s a hassle to clean up, and toxic to breath while spraying. So you need a mask and at least be out in the garage to use it. Today there are many acrylic paints that behave very well, but most need to be thinned, about the consistency of 2% milk. They aren’t toxic, but you still don’t want to be breathing the overspray. A good gun that gets the paint on the surface can be sprayed indoors. There are tons of videos on how to choose a gun, what pressures to use, and what paint, how to, etc on YouTube, but the best thing to do is just get you some cardboard and shoot some paint, no substitute for experience. It’s really a lot of fun! Just be sure to keep your gun clean, once it’s got dried paint in it, it can be hard to get back to square one.
And there is this stuff made mostly for car modelers, but good for so much, peel and stick metal sheets. It’s real metal! Comes in chrome, steel and aluminum, brass and copper colors, cut a piece and stick it on the part, burnish it smooth, and it brings extreme realism to models! Real easy to use once you get the hang of it. A small package of a few sheets will last a long time.
And I may have already mentioned it, but I bought a kit of weathering powders. Kind of like powdered makeup I’m guessing, take a dry brush and dust it onto models in strategic locations, and it makes it look dirty! Rusty, moldy, sooty, muddy, or whatever you’re going for. It makes a whole world of difference in realistic dioramas, adds realism. It requires the art of subtlety. A little goes a very long way, my kit has 12 different colors, from white dust to black soot, brick dust, mud and earth, it’s a ton of fun once you get the hang of it. Get your camera close up with a macro lens, and amaze yourself with how real it looks! I’ve got some pics around somewhere, of a train station I built in HO scale, I’m right proud of. I’ve got about 800 hours in it.
Making models is fun! But, tweaking them out and taking realistic photographs of it really takes it to the next level. So much better than sitting on a shelf collecting dust. And it’s art! No matter how good you get, you can always do better. And if you’re good enough, you can sell your photos to magazines!

That is absolutely amazing, I wouldn't know where to start. I'm planning out a kind of diorama setting for some atmospheric shots, I'm just waiting for a special printer cartridge that allows for waterproof colour printing to arrive..
I love the original R1, hard to think that it and the Duke 916 are over 20 years old now.
Well I said I had something special in the making and here it is, the Honda Cub. Cubs have been in production for over 50 years and they are still the world's best selling bike. I remember decades ago reading in MCN that everyone should have a Cub in their shed - when your car won't start, your bike won't go and all other options are gone drag it out and it will always get you out of trouble no matter how long you've left it... Maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but the point is a good one! :)

Still got one. The ANF125 Innova, the ultimate itteration of the Cub. I just dragged it out of the garage yesterday for a once over before selling it. It's a 2008 in nigh on new condition and only 4k miles on it. One for the collectors I reckon.

That's the thing I've picked up from the YouTube vids, not to have dead straight lines and edges but to think about how grass and weeds grow and how litter moves about etc, much harder to do than it looks.

Yes I love the pizza box, it gives it that last bit of realism! I can almost smell pizza when I see it. And I always thought the V Max to be an excellent design, I saw one, for real, a collector had it on his trailer along with a few other rare bikes. The man I sold my first Harley to, after I spent a small fortune doing a resto-mod, lives in California. A Japanese man, who was buying up literally dozens of bikes to restore and ship back to Japan to sell at inflated prices.
The dirt roads on my small layout are real dirt! I went out into the yard, found dirt the color I wanted, and sifted it. Then spread it out to my liking, and sprayed glue over it. I also made this neat machine that makes the grass, they sell them for a hefty price, but I made my own with a high voltage transformer, a 9v power source, and a Tupperware cup with a metal screen over the top. It statically charges this fake grass, which are rayon fibers died green. I spread glue, stick a ground pin in the “ground”, and shake this charged grass over it, and it all stands up like magic! You can buy this rayon in many colors and lengths.
The little barn is a wooden model, I stained the exterior with a wood aging die, and painted the roof silver. Then used that weathering powder to make it look rusted. The crops in the field and the vines on the wall come pre made, just glue in place. That stone wall, I have a rubber mold that I used a plaster of Paris to cast each piece separately, and it’s so easy to take black paint, thinned about 7 to 1 with water, and dab the white plaster with a sponge to make it look like granite.
I got into the model railroad because of its computer operation, it can be endlessly complicated and automated, controlling different trains separately while on the same track. But, I quickly became enamored with the modeling. Although I have not indulged in some time, these days playing music has taken up most of my spare time. But, one day soon I’ll be too old to do that (or my band mates will), and I’ll go back to modeling.
Now I’ve got to dig up that old computer to get those pics that I am truly proud of!

People don’t realize the research that goes into making good models, to study what, when and where to make them accurate. Even Navy models that are in, “Water”, with rough seas, there is no end to the talent out there.

I’ve seen some American Civil War models locally, but the models of WWII have a lot more stuff to work with! People don’t realize the research that goes into making good models, to study what, when and where to make them accurate. I’ve seen some modelers who are so talented that they can model an explosion, with the red fire and smoke, people and objects flying through the air, all static, frozen in time, that to me is truly amazing! Even Navy models that are in, “Water”, with rough seas, there is no end to the talent out there.
RussellThese are post war Soviet armies so fortunately there were no battles here or we'd be living in areas poisoned by tactical nuclear weapons, even if it didn't escalate to all out MAD, which would have been highly likely!

Absolutely addictive acceleration, in fact before the Suzuki Hyabusa came along the V-Max was the fastest accelerating production bike. Rather a different story when you reached a corner though. Ah yes! A beautiful machine! Narrow for the horsepower as I recall. And I always loved those scoops on the sides of the tank, they really gave it that “Jet Fighter”, appeal!
Unfortunately I never had chance to ride one.

I have finally found the photos of the model train station I made about 8 years ago. I’ve got like 70 pictures of it, so I’ll only post one here, so I won’t highjack your entire thread! I’ll start another thread about it elsewhere.
Love those Ducati’s by the way, I lusted over the 996 in the showroom for hours! Our man John Fogarty won World Superbike championship on one for 7 years! It was a privilege to watch him race.

However , my mind works in an odd way and the thread title had me thinking of when I attended Cockpitfest at Newark a few yrs ago.
One of the Newcastle lads from a museum (aviation one ) was there ,with an Auster I think (cockpit)
He told us how one day a young man with a camera bag asked him (he was volunteering that day) if he could take a few pictures on models on the plane wings ?
They were by the model section I believe ,when the question was posed , so he said 'Sure '!!
A while later , he noticed a couple of well made up girls with American tunics and skirts, stocking came in and draped themselves over the wings of 2 of the exhibits whilst matey took some -artistic posed shots !!
Plenty of suspender and bra on show too:eek:
Unfortunately the man in charge buggered them off ,as soon as he realised what was going on !!:D

I absolutely loved my moto-cross in the mid eighties, but by god I'm paying the price. Replaced discs in back and neck, need new knees, etc. etc. Mind I had a go on a full race spec 900 Fireblade and the first thing I said when I got off was...feel my chest. My heart was beating like a kodo drum. The acceleration was unbelievable.....hats off to the guys who race these....awesome.

I have to admit I didn't know much about it but some reading and a few YouTube vids and I can tell it would certainly give ones bowels a challenge to stay in tact. 1000cc supercharged 310 horse power, recipe for naughtiness. There's a video on YouTube of one put on the road, somewhere it was never meant to go. Thank god mad bikers are still out there.
I've been on a bit of a Ducati vibe, sporting thourghbreds and iconic styling. The original 916, a modern classic, the 1199 Panigali, superb ride and very desirable. Then there's the 888 World Superbike racer, forerunner to Carl Foggarty's 916 world beating 916 and finally the Desmosedici, 2004 version in the late Nicky Hayden's trim.

These are my latest additions to the collection of models. They were very complicated builds but very enjoyable too. It's a bit of a shame that so much detail is hidden under the bodywork, I think I'll take photos through the building of the next model.
The first is Marc Marquez's 2014 Honda RC213 V4 Moto GP bike. Not posted here for a while, still making the models, they do look great lined up but that's it when they're finished. I bought the Honda 400/4 model, what a pain the engine is....
Bit of a departure from my usual model projects, just fancied a bit of a challenge.
I've always had an interest in submarines so I decided to make this German type 21 U boat. Very complicated to build but interesting with the cutaway side to see just how claustrophobic it must have been to serve on one.

Thanks for the comments chaps and yes Steve, she would be in the bad books!. Apart from the challenge of building complex models it's interesting reading the history of the original craft, development and technical details. Also the social and cultural consequences of such a devastating time in history. There is a sobering reminder in the detail of this model, the flag on the conning tower does not show the swastika as it is illegal in Germany to reproduce it in any form.
Following on from the U-Boat I couldn't resist the Russian Typhoon class sub. The largest and most expensive sub ever built. With it's twin titanium hulls and carrying 48 nuclear missiles along with front and rear firing torpedos it was a devastating weapon. The last one was decommissioned in 2010, most were broken up but there is still two moored in a port on the Baltic sea. Famously it was the sub in The Hunt For Red October.

Well that didn't take long, just couldn't resist it. This is in 1/72 scale.,just about 4 feet long. I've only assembled the hull so far as I don't have the correct paints yet. To be honest I'm not sure where it will live when it's finished but I'm moving house soon so hopefully I'll find the right spot for it. Finally finished the type 9 U boat, measures just over 3.5 feet long. The detail is very good and required a lot of fiddly painting. I've put my glasses case in the first picture to give an idea of the size.
