Probably the same reason Nigel Farage (also privately educated) laughably poses as 'a man of the people'. Inverse snobbery works when your audience thinks that 'talking posh' is A Bad Thing.

The question remains why it was allowed on television in the first place. In any right thinking society a show like that would never have existed.

It was a show firmly based on the victorian freakshow and mockery. To have people subjected to lie detector tests on national television is deeply scandalous.

Its none of our business and it was picking on people who dont seem to realise the dangers of airing their dirty laundry in public. The presenter was particularly condescending and it all amounted to chav bashing.

Ive never understood hoe the JK show ever existed. It sadly exposes the selfish nature of our species and the way we project our own failings onto others just to avoid owning our own truths. What really gets me is that that self absorbed nasty individual has made huge amounts of cash on the back of people’s misery.

You can’t blame the people that are on the show, they are just trying to understand their lives during a bad time. Reaching out for help is not a bad thing. However, taking advantage of the situation is.

The reality is that they were being preyed upon in a particularly insidious way to give other people their self satisfied kicks.

I dont feel the presenter ever really cared. To lecture these people in a pseudo middle class way is just patronising and offensive . You could argue that they have been let down by society but to parade peoples troubles on television for entertainment is a disgrace

The biggest worry is that it got viewing figures and its not the only show guilty of this looking down upon rubber necking.

I hope this now turns the tide and other crap like cant pay take it away are pulled

There is a nasty satisfaction being gained from the misery of others. A dark side of human nature which needs no encouragement

Well put Martin - I for one have rarely seen this programme, as I'm usually out working, and when not there's always other stuff to be getting on with (like playing records!), but on the occasions where a job stalls due to weather or something, an oft-heard sentence is "Well I may as well go home and watch Jeremy Kyle", Implying that watching or participating is what you do when you've nothing else going on.

I've always viewed the participants as just being the ones most likely to have nicked the tools from my van, without any thought for their circumstances, or their exploitation by JK and his producers. Thanks to yours and other's posts I'm seeing another side to it now, and I feel a bit bad about just seeing it as a harmless send up.

These folk really need help and/or a kick up the backside, but airing their problems in public clearly isn't the way to go. Perhaps the publicity surrounding the axing of this show will make something positive happen, though I'm not holding my breath.

Hi Martin,

I wholeheartedly concur with your sentiments on the dark side of human nature, etc. However...

I hope this now turns the tide and other crap like cant pay take it away are pulled

...whilst I get where you're coming from and take no pleasure in witnessing genuine cases of hardship, I do like seeing the wealthy or those who insist on living WAY beyond their means (and who also feature highly on that programme) get their comeuppance, for trying to shaft the often much poorer folk that they haven't paid!

Therefore, in those instances, let's not forget who very often the *real* victims are, which are the claimants.....;)

So when I see those selfish, dishonest, materialistic wankers in their mansions, mortgaged up to their eyeballs, with two Ferraris and a Porsche sat outside, none of which they can actually afford, and all bought on the 'never, never', simply to project a false image of wealth to their friends and neighbours, get their just desserts, then I laugh my tits off, as I DETEST folk like that - especially when their pretentious spendthrift lifestyle has been funded on the back of someone else's misery!!

In general, people these days want WAY too much, especially in terms of material possessions, and somehow think that they are 'entitled' to a lifestyle that they simply can't afford. That, and the shameful and wasteful 'disposable society' we've created now, grinds my gears like you wouldn't imagine!

And so anything which highlights that fact and forces those guilty to come crashing down to earth, and FACE REALITY, in my view is to be encouraged, not least for showcasing that you must always take FULL PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for any debts *you* create, and if you can afford to clear them, then take your head out of the fucking sand and DO SO, rather than intentionally trying to live off the back of others, or pretend that the debts don't exist!

Therefore, if programmes such as 'Can't Pay, We'll Take it Away', or 'The Sheriffs are Coming', successfully send out that message and stop those guilty of such behaviour, then that has to be a good thing. Perhaps, in that respect, for the sake of morality, these shows should focus solely on those who have ran up huge debts, at the expense of others, and who *CAN* afford to pay, but won't (and so need taught a lesson), rather than those in the most unfortunate of circumstances who can't?

I'd still watch them, as that's the only bit I'm interested in. In my view however, given what I've said, these shows do fulfil a useful purpose/public service, and for reasons given, can be hugely entertaining!

I've never seen any of these programmes, but then I don't relish watching other people's misfortunes, deserved or not. The audience for daytime TV seems to be made up of bloody students, OAPs and the unemployed, who I guess will watch any old shite. 'Cash in the Attic', 'Homes Under the Hammer', 'Bodies in the Basement', that sort of thing.

There's obviously an odd sort of attraction to 'misery memoirs' and similar for some people though; the covers of cheap magazines are full of horror stories about people coming to grief in various horrible ways. Is it the comfort the readers get from thinking 'There but for the grace of God', or is it more like rubbernecking at a car crash or other disaster?

So if you were a member of a jury who had successfully convicted a (guilty) child molester, you wouldn't feel any sense of satisfaction in their subsequent 'misfortune'?

I know that's an extreme example, but for me ALL wrong-doing by anyone, which has had serious consequences in the life of others, deserves punished, and so I take great satisfaction from having seen justice been done, no matter how that has happened.

Possibly, but then I would have been involved in the process, rather than just gawping at a TV screen. (As it happens, I've done jury service, twice. It was incredibly boring).

I know that's an extreme example, but for me ALL wrong-doing by anyone, which has had serious consequences in the life of others, deserves punished, and so I take great satisfaction from having seen justice been done, no matter how that has happened.

But these TV programmes are rigged and scripted to make 'good entertainment'. You have no real insight into what's happened, just the producer's version of events. Sitting through a trial, hearing the evidence, the arguments for the defence and the prosecution, and the judge's summing-up is entirely different from watching a concoction aimed at the amusement/entertainment of a passive audience rather than serving justice and due process.

Marco
17-05-2019, 09:00

So have I, and on one occasion, involving a 'drug dealer', who in reality was no such thing, but the police were trying to 'fit up', it certainly wasn't boring, not least trying to (and successfully) convincing the idiots in the jury with me, not to be fooled by the false evidence being presented by the police!;)

The satisfaction I got, therefore, was in preventing what was clearly an innocent man from being convicted of a crime he hadn't committed, and crucially also (in some small way) fighting corruption, so you make a good point about being 'involved in the process'.

But these TV programmes are rigged and scripted to make 'good entertainment'. You have no real insight into what's happened, just the producer's version of events.

No doubt that some of what happens, in terms of the behaviour of the participants, is 'staged' for the camera.

However, if a High Court Writ has been issued in your name, outlining that you owe the debt in question, then in that sense there's nothing to be 'rigged'. And often that debt has been accrued at the expense of others who simply can't afford not being paid the money that they were owed.

So for me, the bastards guilty of such deserve their comeuppance, and I take great pleasure in watching it happen!:exactly:

Let's try putting this into context.

I'm no fan of the show and don't think I've actually watched a full episode however if my understanding is correct there are usually three "stories" per episode?

A quick search on Google suggest that there have been 3320 episodes over 14 years, that means there have been 10,000+ people featured on the show, ONE has committed suicide. It could be argued that this probably well below the national average.

My apologies for applying fact to the moral outrage, as you were

Im not jumping on any bandwagon. There really is no defence for the show. Do you like seeing people ridiculed and humiliated on television? Its essentially bullying of the worst order.

Its built up its reputation by using the "Waynes been a naughty boy" hasnt he ladies and gentlemen....boo jeer...Got a job wayne?....Boo Jeer...you should keep it in your trousers....boo jeer...get out get a job and provide for your baby...is it your kid?...I dont think its yours laddy.. grow up.... boo jeer...tune in after these adverts to see the lie detector results

Cheating and sleeping around goes on throughout society. The programme picks on people that are attracted by a low fee and a chance to be on the box. Ok they have agreed to appear but it still doesnt make it right.

Its trash television and for decades its set up other vile garbage like benefit street. Big brother was all about seeing people have mental breakdowns because the truth is that the ratings dont support a group of people living in communal harmony.

We see the slant the programme delivers. These reality shows are not really the truth as its all in the edit...all in the angle for ratings.

Im not having that Im stuck up and need to lighten up. Make trash tv but dont do it for the ratings of seeing others belittled and humiliated.

That's because although on some forums, announcing that you are too intelligent to be watching TV is received with applause and agreement, here you'll just get the piss taken.

Although there is a wider question which is should TV reflect reality as per Jeremy Kyle and other freaks show TV, or should TV be proscribed so that it gives the impression that we live in a utopian society full of people who have risen above basic human nature (even though they haven't) and spend their time reading books, listening to opera and other wholesome intellectual pastimes?

Trashy and real or intellectually fraudulent? Which is better? At the moment we have a little of both which I think is probably a reasonable balance.

I don't like something because I find it immoral therefore it shouldn't be allowed?

Personally I think it's utter crap.

However I don't feel I have the right to impose my opinion on others and tell them what shows they should watch or take part in.

That's the modern world for you though. We have 'anti-fascism' campaigners who want fascists to have their right to free speech proscribed. But wait a minute, isn't preventing free speech in itself fascist?

It would be funny if the ramifications weren't so serious.

Apparently there is a petition going around to have ITV reinstate the programme. It has already attracted 5,000 signatures.

IMO it's all a complete waste of time, electricity and, indirectly, my money!

In what way did you (indirectly) waste your money? Are you saying that the Stannah stairlift you bought is a useless piece of crap? Or the "free" clock radio that came with your funeral plan never materialised? Or were you left reeling from QuickQuid's obscene APR?

If you had a trip or fall at work, you could actually end up better off financially.

I think the quality of the products advertised is a good indicator of the quality of the programmes they interrupt :)

I agree, but perhaps the wider and more important issue is to examine why so many folks these days have an insatiable desire to watch that drivel in the first place...? Or other such idiocy, like "Gogglebox'?

I mean, I honestly can't think of anything I'd least rather follow than the tacky and sordid affairs of a bunch of moronic tattooed, toothless chavs, or tales of their in-bred sprogs, spawned from shagging their own cousins - or watching other people, sat in their front room watching the bloody TV...:rolleyes:

Quite frankly, I'd rather stick pins in my eyes! What exactly is the world coming to that such mindless nonsense is now considered as 'good entertainment'??

Haha - too right! It's also one of the reasons why I always record (or watch on catch-up) any programme shown on a minor commercial TV channel, so as simply to avoid the indescribably and unbelievably sad, slash-your-wrists-to-type adverts!

It is my money. Commercial channels are funded by advertisements, the cost of which are passed on to the buyers of the products advertised. Even if you don't own or watch television, you end up paying for it (at least in part).

:exactly: Recording and catch-up is the way we always do it. As I've suggested before, the advertisers will be well aware that we are doing this and I expect they will counter with more 'product placement', and I'm fine with that.

Someone posted earlier about the appalling quality of daytime TV, but that doesn't need to be an issue any more, thanks to catch up, Netflix, Prime etc. No excuse to be watching daytime crap, unless you are lazy, tight, or just in denial about your crap tastes.

Hmm, not sure about all all these suggestions of programme content censorship.

I don't like something because I find it immoral therefore it shouldn't be allowed?

10,000 people have been on show, there are probably millions that watch it, but a handful of people don't agree with its morality so it needs to be stopped?

AFAIK it was ITV who cancelled the JK show, not a group of anti-free speech intellectuals.

Yes and that is the really worrying aspect of it.

What was that quote..."Nobody ever lost money by underestimating the taste of....."

the problem with my position is that Im just going to be considered a snob for telling them what to do. Most JK or gogglebox fans would just tell me to F off.

Im serious that we have bred a significant base level of morons. In truth it was always that way though.

Surely the aim should be to raise standards. Im not against light entertainment. All I am saying is that you dont make programmes which exploit people in a patronising, cruel and cynical way.

Hey, leave Gogglebox alone! I like the Malones, they seem quite normal. Not too keen on the hoity-toity older couple though, they look like the sort who only watch TV when they have to. When she says "What a load of old rubbish" in a Janet Street-Porter style, I want to chuck something at the telly. Not that I ever watch it though - I much prefer more highbrow programming, like all the super-discerning folks on here :)

Thats where its all wrong though Gary.

You must have a line of taste that you dont want to see crossed so its a question of where that line is.

Im not trying to be like the nanny state but we have to step in at some level and say stop the humiliation. Its dangerous crap and thats the main point

I dont think you can counter this by saying I have no right to impose my opinion on others. Thats what a society with any laws or organisation does. You are living everyday with someones judgement imposed on you. Hopefully that is mostly for the good

Its an unacceptable programme and the silent majority have turned a blind eye for too long

I don't think most of the silent majority could give a toss tbh.

I honestly believed the people in it were actors and the stories made up.

It's difficult in discussions like to disagree without sounding offensive and the statement I'm about to make is absolutely not meant to sound as such but just because you say the programme is unacceptable doesn't mean it is. Yes you find it unacceptable, I don't like it, but millions of people, rightly or wrongly, enjoy it.

....and which is a sad reflection/indictment on our society. As I said, social media is largely to blame for 'our' (although I certainly don't include myself in this) obsession with sharing our lives in public with complete strangers, and which has largely given birth to these diabolical 'reality' shows.

I'm not sure that's entirely accurate, again I'm using Google as a source.
Facebook started in 2004 and in 2005, when Jeremy Kyle first aired, was only in use in 21 UK universities, so JK certainly predated Facebook.
Maybe the other reality TV crap came along later and was boosted by people posting what they're doing on social media.
I don't know as I don't use social media or watch reality TV. (unless you count I'm a celebrity get me out of here)

Yep - and 'Reality TV' (as it came to be known) goes way back further than that with the prototype for 'Big Brother' being first broadcast in 1993.
'The Living Soap' featured a bunch of students living in a flat (paid for by the BBC) who had to live under the gaze of a bunch of cameras 24/7. At that time most of us who had 'the internet' had to put up will dial-up modems and wait half an hour to download a tiny photo

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/making-a-spectacle-of-themselves-six-students-have-become-the-stars-of-a-living-television-soap-owen-1511568.html

If we want to be really pedantic, this was preceded by the 1974 BBC series 'The Family' which featured a 'fly-on the wall' account of the day to day life of an 'ordinary' British family':
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYNGRqXKkSA

At that time 'the internet' was nowt more than two cans and a piece of string (if you were lucky)

Marco
17-05-2019, 21:01
Sure, but the point is, the introduction of social media, in particular (not just the Internet), has increased the popularity of all this 'reality' bollox, by 'normalising' the broadcasting of your life (and its problems) in public to all and sundry, thus made the situation now much worse!
