London Bake-Off : Sunday October 31st 2010 : Multi-Forum Event

The Art Of Sound are pleased to support a new London Bake-Off being sponsored by The Hi-Fi Subjectivist forum and Richard Dunn of Nene Valley Audio, and organised with assistance from members of Pink Fish Media, and hopefully the Hi-Fi Wigwam too.

To borrow some of the details from Richard's thread on PFM:


In conjunction with The Hi-Fi Subjectivist forum members I am sponsoring and organising a London Bake-Off show for Sunday October 31st 2010 from 9am to 7pm, price £10. It is not like Scalford, people don't own rooms or even share rooms, it will be like a themed hotel based domestic bake-off. The themes will be

1. Computer based audio / digital
2. Vinyl based audio / record decks, cartridges, phono stages, suts
3. Amplifiers / valve v SS
4. Speakers
5. Mains & Cables.

Two people (members of PFM or at Subjectivist) will volunteer to run each of the rooms. Attendees bring something in the bake-off catagories or to provide equipment for the base systems, or if you want then just music. Rooms can mix and match gear but responsibility for set up and change is with the room bosses and the owners of the gear being changed, no one else touches for safety and damage sake.

The hotel is 200m from Junction 26 Waltham Cross on the M25 north of London. They have a small wing off the main foyer that is self contained with 5 meeting rooms, all big enough for at least 20 to 30 people to listen, all opening onto a large square seating area with coffee and tea facilities. Own side entrance from car park for access, unloading etc. This wing is mostly used for business meetings, conferences etc. It is a fine hotel with large bar, restaurants and health spar and swimming pool.

The show will be open to other forums and other forum member to participate. *ALL* other forums and *ALL* other individuals and non members are welcome, the show will be an industry truce to all belligerents.

It should be fun and informative and I hope lots of you can come and join us for the day.

PS this is not an NVA event.

This sounds like it could be a great day for meeting up with fellow forum members here and elsewhere on other places. It also sounds like an interesting formula for a bake-off, distinct from Scalford - I've volunteered to be The Art Of Sound's 'official' rep but it would be a fantastic opportunity to meet up with some of our South-East based members (or anyone who wants to travel down for the day) with or without gear or music to share!

It's obviously a bit of a way off, but if folks could note it in their diary now, it's less likely to become the victim of a last minute double-booking :rolleyes:

Count me in on this one - Scalford hall was just a bit far with my transport situation last year although do regret not being able to go there as it looked like such a great place.

Will bring open reel Nagra D or possibly T audio with Dolby SR (if I can dig out a flightcase)..

The rooms are organised by theme:

1. Computer based audio / digital
2. Vinyl based audio / record decks, cartridges, phono stages, suts
3. Amplifiers / valve v SS
4. Speakers
5. Mains & Cables.

There are a couple of people per room responsible for coordinating who gets to drops their stuff into the system when - all the forums will be mixed up so no special rooms.

Having only met two members of the forum (Tripmaster and Puffin) this would be a good opportunity to meet others.

By the time of the Bake-Off I should have my cMP2 computer and all its power supplies properly housed and my Gedlee Abbey's re-sprayed, so count me in for those - assuming help in lifting the Abbeys.

If it helps, I can stand down from the Turntables subs bench and join you in cables ands mains stuff to balance things out. I have a PS Audio Power Plant Premier and various Vertex AQ cables that I could bring along; also if there was interest my Stillpoints ESS rack and various Stillpoints support cones, component stands etc.

For everyone else, I am keen to set up a mini Audio Jumble facility at the Halloween Bake-Off. Not sure quite how it will work in terms of manning the tables, but there certainly won't be any additional charge for selling stuff. What do AoS users think? Would an Audio Jumble be welcomed at the event? Would anyone wish to volunteer to be a 'minder'?

Just to explain what this show is about - it's a larger version of a domestic Bake-Off where everyone is encouraged to participate. It's not the same as the Scalford Hall enthusiasts' show last year or a conventional HiFi show. That means that the themed rooms will be kicking off with whatever equipment and music that the helpers bring to start with, but thereafter it's very much about enthusiasts bringing their own stuff, be it cables, amps, sources, speakers etc, that they'd like to try out/show off. It should be dynamic, fun, good-natured and instructive (possibly chaotic too!). For those who don't want to bring equipment and simply want to come along and listen, chat and gawp, don't feel at all left out - your contributions, opinions, observations etc are equally important to the success of the Bake-Off Show.

Jimkempton seems to indicate that he has someone to help with turntables, but many hands make light work and he may be happy for a volunteer.

I'm intending to come, bringing those Nohr 9.0 marble speakers top right in the banner. Not sure I can lift anything more! 45kg each and wickedly designed to simulate a small pig coated in basting fat trying to avoid a barbeque.
