Yes I know the world cup seems far but the fever pitch will start to rise over the next few weeks. For me its one of the few times I will watch a match on TV
Here is your chance to have your vote and share the ups and downs of the world cup

Well my heart says England, but my head says not.
The revelations of the JT wick dipping scandal may have caused a very deep rooted unsettling of the England squad.
That, coupled with what seems to be a large number of injuries in the ranks of first call players I'd be pleased but surprised to see England get as far as the semi-finals.

Who'll win it ?
Hmmmmm!!!!!
Argentina have as good a chance as any other team.

Overpaid ?
Undoubtedly.
Poofs ?
I think Wayne Bridge' ex missus might have something else to say about that.

I need at least to watch the first couple of games of each team to decide who is good and who is the outsider.
At the moment, just by knowing the players (but not the team) I would say Spain, Brazil and England. Holland, Italy and Argentina are the outsiders. ;)
If I need to vote only for one : then Spain.

We have a charity sweepstake at work, and I pulled out Brazil! So if England disappoint us again (never! ;)) I hope they win, 'cos I can give the winnings straight back to the charity.

I have a sneaky feeling that Germany could do well this time, but usually when the tournament is played in a high altitude part of the world, one of the South American teams sneaks it, so why not Argentina.... :)

The problem with England winning it, is that we'd never hear the end of it - jeez, we still get nineteen bloody sixty-six rammed down our throats at every freakin' opportunity!

I think you lot will do well though - possibly getting to the semis (as you've got a damn good Italian manager), but I can't see any more than that.

My own country (Italy) I suspect will be there or there abouts, but I strongly suspect that the cup will be won by either Argentina or Brazil.

It would be good to see Spain fulfil their potential and do something special though for a change!

All I hope for is some good attacking football and plenty of goals, as I can't stand sleep-inducing defensive football (yes, even though I support Italy :eyebrows:)

Well I do not like football and don't have a TV to watch it on if I did! so I think you could say that I couldn't care less.

I always enjoy the World Cup , you always get some high drama and even good football on occasion ? .

But a very important statistic which often go's unnoticed is that NO European team has ever won outside of Europe, and only Brazil has ever won outside of South America (Sweden1958) .

So this doesn't bode well for England for starters , i think being realistic Quarters or semi at best for England .

My prediction for the winner ! either Brazil or Argentina beating a European side in the Final as both have won all there World cups against Euro teams . strange but true .

One big thing in favour of the European sides is that it is Winter in South Africa - the conditions will be quite temperate.
If the games are kicking off in the evening there will quite a chill in the air.

chris@panteg

Yes Chris a good point and it may make a big difference ! who knows maybe history in the making .

Argentina are a damn good bet though ! as they won in 78 at home and it was winter .

England's first game is against the USA, which should be a good'un.
The USA are never to be underestimated - they'll be no pushover.
Just think of the Yanks playing in the Premiership too - they have competed against English opposition week in, week out.

Should be a very interesting opening game !

Dates and times for matches can be found here http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/index.html

Chris, as you're more up on these things than me, who were the form teams in the qualifying rounds - did anyone win their group by a large number of points?

Also, did any of the second-placed teams really impress? I didn't really follow the games.

The reason I ask is that sometimes a team's form in the run-up to the tournament can be a indication as to how well they'll do in the tournament itself :)

Marco.

Best thing is to dig around here http://www.fifa.com/worldcup - I've just been looking for the European groups though, and they do not appear to be complete.

To be honest I was only really following the outcome of the England qualifying games, and England had their best ever results from a qualifying campaign, finishing top of their group with two (I think) games in hand.

I expect that following England through the World Cup will be similar to following Manchester City - bloody frustrating at times, but fantastic on the occasions when it comes together.
Of course I'm hoping that the latter is going to be the way things turn out, but I'm to much of a realist to expect it.

Cheers - don't see Scotland's group there, though....

However, from the groups listed, it's pretty obvious who the form European teams are and the likely favourites out of that for winning the cup, too... Although I still think the winner will come from South America :)

Argentina for me too,
England will bottle it as usual, I can't see Germany gelling without Ballack, and look at the seasons Tevez and Messi have had!
England v USA should be a good game, if the USA play anything like they played last summer... and they have an impressive array of goalkeepers!

Didn't Scotland win the World Cup in Argentina back in 1978? I'm sure I remember Rod Stewart making a record about it.

Hehehe... No they were 'going to' win it from the start, but erm, didn't quite make it! :eyebrows:

Still, the 3-2 win against Holland was memorable, especially *that* goal from Archie Gemmill....!
