About one year ago I've received Mike Oldfield's "Hergest Ridge" original mix in FLAC format (apparently a very good 'needle drop' master off the first LP pressing). The album sounds amazing -- super warm with incredible sonic textures and details. A joy to listen to.

That experience forced me to go back and listen to the official CD, which is Oldfield's own remix (Mike declared that remix to be the final version). Didn't like it one bit (sounds way colder and the gobledegook vocals are placed too prominently and forward in the mix; in a word -- grating).

Do you guys have any opinion on this? What's your favorite version of this near-masterpiece (or, shall I say 'flawed masterpiece')?

My only experience of it is the original album pressing I have, which I'd agree with is a lovely, warm, textured sound. Happy enough with that!

Would be interesting to hear the remix though, it's fascinating to see how artists revisit material - not always for the better!
