My 1st table was a Goldring GL 78 in the early 70s.
Next was Technics SL 150 with Sme 3009
Then came a Thorens Td 160 with the Sme.
Next up was a Linn sondek again with the Sme,this one did not stay long!
Then came a Cranfield rock with Excalibur arm, great turntable i think i read somewhere only 30 of these were ever made.
Which gave way to a Nottingham analogue hyperspace with a few different arms,n/a space arm,Helius orion,Sme v,Origin live Conqueror.
Now Nottingham Analogue Dais with Origin live 12 inch Enterprise.
What did you start with?

First turntable was some cheap Hitachi belt drive from Richer Sounds, then a Revolver Rebel for many years. Sold up on vinyl for many years and then got back in via a Creek Wyndsor which I got discounted from Superfi moved on quickly when a P/X it for a Orbe with Rega 300. Had that for a few years and then moved to my current SME 20/2 with a SME V arm. Suspect will stay this way until I retire and splurge some of my lump sum on 30/2, Brinkmann or TW.

late starter to vinyl, started in early 00's with a Project RPM 6, realised vinyl listening needed quite some commitment and moved it on. Eventually the lure drew me back in and i plunged for a plug and play Rega RP3 which really didn't do much for me truth be told, so 'upgraded to a Rega RP6 which i used for a couple of years when i happened in 2013 to hear a Funkfirm LSD and that blew me away. Traded the Rega there and then and still own the LSD (its spinning as i type this) and absolutely love it.

In my main system there have been surprisingly few, as follows:

- Garrard 210 autochanger (in a Bush record player)
- BSR P268 (In an Amstrad record player)
- BSR something else (in an Amstrad Tower System)
- Garrard 630s (In a Rank Radio music centre)
- Hitachi PS-17
- Garrard 301
- Nakamichi TX-1000

However, outside of the main system it is alleged by some that I have owned 90% of the turntables ever made since about 1965. I couldn't possibly comment...

Not had too many over the years

Technics Linear tracker can’t remember the model number
Technics SL1200 mk2
Nottingham Spacedeck still in use
Lenco GL75 still in use

Although I’m going to change to a Dais at some point in the near future I still fancy a vintage TD124

Not that many, really.
Started out with the classic Dual cs505
Then an LP12, which was upgraded through the years, Basic-Ittok-Ekos, and also Cirkus, Lingo etc etc.
Eventually got cheesed off with Linn upgrade paths & prices, so about 12 years ago I changed it for a
Michell Orbe with the Ekos. Still got that now & rate it very highly.
I'd love to listen to a decent Avid, but I will very likely stick with the Orbe for a good few years.

Tenasi belt drive from Richer Sounds - in 1988. Not bad at all, sold it to one of my brothers and he used it for years until he went CD only.

Then got a Kenwood linear tracker from Richers back when they did all the bin-end Jap bargains. Quality job with the honeycomb aluminium chassis and all that jazz. Had that for years.

Stupid to sell that - and then went though a 'dark age' of nasty Phillips belt drive, a Sanyo direct drive, a Sony direct drive (not one of the good ones) and some other tat so awful I've wiped it from memory.

Then:

Systemdeck IIX electronic with Linn Basik Plus arm. Second hand but got it for nowt, broke not long after I got it and it went back to Systemdek for about 6 months to be fixed at huge expense. But after that a great deck, had a Nag MP30 on it that was a top sound.

Always fancied a Technics SL1200 so bought an old one for £200. What a great deck, sounds like a CD player! Bought a newer, mintier one of Roy of this parish and fitted a Nagaoka MP50 and a Funk Firm Achromat (recommended). Now sounds exactly like the CD player but replacement stylus is so expensive it costs 25p a side to play a record. Gave up at that point.

:D Bought a pair of SL1200s not long after joining this forum, couldn't see what all the fuss was about & reverted to my trusty old JVC QLA7 I'd had from new.

First proper record player was a Rega 2 / RB250 for a couple of years as a student. Next up was a Pink Triangle Little Pink Thing / RB250 bought with my first proper pay packet which I had for about 15 years.

Then eBay came along and I levelled up to PT Export / RB300 and then PT Anniversary / SME IV which I kept for about 10 years because I couldn't better it. Everything else just came and went. A parade of record players passed through including various Thorens (TD150, 160, 166, 320), Revox B795, Linn Axis / Basik+, Michell Gyrodek / Technoarm, Lenco's (3x GL75, GL78s and an 88 that I head for many many years) all mostly for fun and education.

Then there was the LP12 phase which was more out of curiosity than anything else. I had many including a late 70's Afro / FR64s (one of the better ones), an early 80's / Valhalla / Basik+, a lovely mid 80's black ash / pre-cirkus / Ittok / Armageddon. That one subsequently had an Aro on it for a while and was probably the best LP12 I had. Then one in a new Linn walnut plinth / Cirkus / Hercules / Jelco 750d. Finally a high spec one with Chris Harban Wenge plinth / Kahn / Norton Airpower / Rubikon / Ortofon AS212 (this one was totally pants). The hard truth is that none of the LP12's measured up to the Anni. Never ever even close. I enjoyed my time with the Linn's though.

Then I had an Technics SP10 / SH-B3 Obsidian plinth (=SL1000) / Jelco SA750L 12" which was a real highlight but this, the final LP12 and the Anni left to make way for a TW Acustic Raven AC3 / Graham Phantom B44 / FR64s that I still have. The Raven is endgame really and I didn't look at another record player for about 5 years after that.

I'll never better the Raven but I love turntables and acquisition has crept back in eventually. I still want to own some of the classics, even if only for a little while so I recently sold my long standing Goldring Lenco 88 to make room for a very nice Voyd / Helius Orion II in a second system. I have several arms lined up to try on this before I settle on its final configuration including an SME V, FR64fx and Helius Cyalene. The Voyd is superb.

I've had countless tonearms and cartridges along the way of course but I'll spare you that long list!

I still have a couple of unfinished Lenco projects on the go in the garage (PTP4) and have just got all the bits together to have another go at a posh TD150. Just a bit of fun like :-)

I got my first real turntable at age 13, in 1975. And it was a BIC. It was all plastic, but, it functioned much like most modern record players, and didn’t do a bad job for such a cheap unit.

I replaced it when I was 17 with an ADC belt drive, with an ADC cartridge on it, huge deck with a big S arm on it. I signed my paycheck over to the clerk to buy it. That was nice, wish I still had it.

But sold it with my whole stereo, and bought a matching Sansui system. Not my best decision ever, and it had a linear tracking Sansui ‘table that had a P mount cartridge, pure junk.

So I ditched that for a Denon! Yes the beautiful big wooden base, high tech arm, a $160 Ortofon cart. I’m thinking the table was a DP-45? And the cart maybe an OM20? And a drunk girl was over to my house, and while I was in the restroom she got into an arm wrestling match with the Denon, and it never worked again. I may even still have it in a box somewhere?

So to get back up and running I bought a Pro-Ject Debut III, a wonderful ‘table! I was amazed that it actually sounded better than the Denon. I added the acrylic platter, and a Grado Gold, and got a lot of use out of it for a few years. I wound up giving it to my Son-in law, and he has amassed a huge record collection in a short time, he’s a vinyl man for sure now!

And I gave it to him because I stepped up to a VPI Scout, the earlier model with the acrylic platter. Personally I think they sound better than the newer aluminum platters, but that could be a matter of taste? Presently a Sumiko Blue Point Special cart on it, my first MC cartridge, on the stock VPI unipivot arm. It’s close to Nirvana for me, to do any better might be too expensive. And I can still upgrade the cartridge quite a bit before I run out of ‘table.

In childhood my father's mono system included a mono Garrard RC-80 and Williamson 6L6 amp he built from scratch. In my high school years I talked him into a Dual 1214 as I was attempting to move us into the stereo era.

My first turntable of my own was a Technics SL-20 which did me for a decade.

Then I moved to a Thorens TD-125 (which I still have and rebuilt last summer). Numerous arms have been on it over the years, currently sporting a Fidelity Research FR-24 MkII - lovely arm.

After that followed a period of all sorts of secondary tables coming and going (ok, mostly not going) - Denon DP-1200, BIC 960 and 980, Dual 1219, Garrard Zero 100 and LAB 80, Technics SL-D2, Ariston RD11S, Braun PS-500, Rek-O-Kut B-12H, Empire 598II, Technics SP-15

Denon DP-80 is the current main deck with two arms - Audiocraft AC-400C and Technics EPA 250.

My story is quite boring, compared to many here.

Pro-Ject Debut - eventually upgraded it with a glass platter. I had to damp the arm with sponge in order to stop sibilance.
Garrard 401 with a slate plinth and SDS platter matt - RB250

That’s it, unless you count a Dual 505 that I obtained very cheaply and fixed up just for the learning process. I think I gave it away to someone who wanted a to get into analogue.

Eagle D7500. Around 1978. We all start somewhere.

Thorens TD104 MkII. 18th birthday present. Still works.

Garrard 401 + RB300. Couldn’t foresee a time when I’d be able to afford everything needed to optimise it, i.e. slate plinth, copper mat, better arm, etc. Decided to revert to a stock deck.

Roksan Xerxes + RB300. Set-up and maintenance proved much fiddlier than imagined.

Pioneer PL71. Plug’n’play heaven.

Thorens TD150 MkI + R200. Got the DIY bug and forged a 150 from three donor decks. Learned a bit, made some mistakes (and learned even more).

Townshend Elite Rock II + Heed Orbit + Origin Live Silver. Rescued and refurbished, a satisfying project that took my vinyl into the same division as my CD. 5 years on no urge to change her.

I bought mine secondhand in 1986 after responding to an ad in "HiFi Answers". A guy in London selling it for £300. My car wasn't up to the 500 mile round trip, so a friend drove me there in his VW Beetle for petrol cost, and I sold him my Mission deck for a good price. No mobile phones or internet then. When I got home that night, my missus told me another bloke phoned to say he had one for sale, and he lived at Lostock Hall, 3 miles down the road.

When I started up the LP12, missus said "Wow, we have bass!" Kept that deck for 26 years with no mods, then got £500 as a p/x.

I've enjoyed my LP12's, like the sound but it's the constant need for attention if you even look at them the wrong way. I also hate the Linn pricing ethos, I mean £50 for a drive belt amongst other things. Also rather like the Techie 1200's you need to spend lots of pounds to make them great but unlike the Technics, to get a sorted one out of the box you've got to shell out £6000. They must be doing something right though to have been producing the LP12 for so long.

I wasn't a big fan of the Linn upgrade doctrine, I found it to be very much 'buy this upgrade or your kit is basically rubbish'. My LP12 was fairly basic but sounded great on a good day and very lacklustre on an off day. I found Linn owners to be a really nice bunch of people though.

I was very impressed with a mate's LP12 back in '91 so I probably would have got one then if I'd had the cutter. It's the old cliché I know but it really did 'Just play music.' Lots of great times spent listening to that, smoking premium grade hashish (he had some great connections) and drinking Tennant's Extra. :D

Not me - I never bought into any of that Linn 'myth'. That's not to say I didn't listen to one in my system. I did; I had the use of one for three months, allowing me to compare it with my own deck. Needless to say I heard no reason why I should have bought one.

I had e few. The first one since my youth I can't remember the model. It was a Russian one, a cabinet - radio, turntable and a space to store records. Many years after I had an Universum VTFC1339RC combo with separate speakers and awful sound. After another pause I have started looking again for a TT.
First came Technics SL23a, after that Linn Axis and last year a long desired Pioneer PLC-590. Still got the last two.

The Technics looks rather useful and that Pioneer is a thing of beauty. I wish I'd had the money when Jamie sold his.

The SL-23a was part of my first vintage passion - Technics system. A nice TT. Now a friend of mine is enjoying it.
The Pioneer was a dream I was chasing for 3 years all over the world until I found it in my city, in perfect condition:) It's a real beauty!

Well, I guess I feel quite insignificant among this esteemed line up from our members. Here is my slightly more modest journey.

BSR TT (from a UK record player, forgot the name) - ceramic cartridge

BSR TT (from an Amstrad system)

Marantz (6025)

JVC L-A110

Dual CS505-MKIII

Systemdek IIX

Michell Gyrodec (various upgrades)

Sony TTS-8000 / Sony PS-X7

My first DD was a Sony PS-6750 and must admit to being blown away by it (I had (and still have) the Gyrodec at this point). I was thinking that I had been lied to by some of the Hi-Fi press of the 1980s (about how underwhelming Japanese DDs were compared to a British Belt Drive TTs). My new appreciation for DDs were no longer limited to Dj'ing exploits.

I have come across a number of PS-X7 and will keep one of them. The TTS-8000 will stay with me as long as it, or I am working (!).

Hi guys, sorry late again to a thread.

My turntable journey over ahem many many years:-

Philips disc jockey junior donated from my cousin..my hifi addiction is all her fault...bless her
Garrard SP25 MkIV
BSR Macdonald MP60..IMHO it sounded better than the SP25
Thorens TD150
AR XA
Thorens TD160B
Philips GA212..IMHO outstanding. It even worked well with and ADC XLM Mk1!!!
Technics SL110/SME 3009
Technics SL120
LP12/Valhalla/G707 then Ittok LV2 plus Lingo..OK but....
Sansui SR222 Mk2..pretty good actually
Michell Gyrodeck SE
Kuzma Stabi
Rega P3 2000...great deck, I should have kept it
Rega P25 ..also really good
Another LP12/Valhalla G707 which I restored
LP12 Majik
Rega RP1/Carbon..fun
Rega RP3
LP12/Valhalla/Basik Plus
and lastly my current steed..Rega Planar 3 2016

Now you may feel I have had more than my fair share of LP12s and you'd be right I'm:mental:. Question is whether I have learnt anything?

Well based on the above I doubt it, and some might question my sanity, still this vinyl journey does seem interesting and fun if on some occasions a journey to nowhere. Maybe the journey is more important than arriving at the destination?

all the best

My journey is quite easy to remember since I find it very hard to part from my tables - so they are almost all still here in my listening room

1. Denon DP-57L My first turntable bought as a teenager - took me a whole summer working on Danish farms to save up for this. It developed a fault in the electronics - so all I can do now is to admire its looks.

2. Pink Triangle w. Helius Orion mk. I. A love/hate relationship because if the constant fettling of the suspension. Sold this one and I don't miss it.

3. Garrard 401 w. Terminator3Pro. I love the simplicity and drive of this thing, and had a great time restoring it. A prized possession. The tonearm is a gem too.

4. Kenwood KD-990. I stumbled upon a mint example and was quite surprised that it sounded so good. My son is going to enherit this one, when he understands the concept of keeping things "Mint". A much undervalued deck these days.

5. Thorens TD-125L w. Jelco 750L. I really don't know why I bought this one - maybe because it's rare. It is not accurate as a DD, but it's charming in a fantastic way. I consider it a the turntable I would bring if I ever were to be stuck on a desert island - it's analogue at its best.

6. The Voyd. An early example I have been fettling with. It's ability to let the tones "hang in the air" is unique. The fettling of the suspension however is not my thing - I don't have the patience. I am trying to convince myself to let this go.

7. Sony TTS-8000 w. Helius Omega Ruby. Bought this year after reading about it on this forum. The description as "Best of DD & Beltdriven" is accurate imo. I consider myself very lucky to be the owner of such a product. It is my endgame - and currently a TB-2000 plinth is on its way from Japan in order for me to use two tonearms on this beauty.

My turntable history:

- a couple of old Soviet turntables nobody here is familiar with
- Sansui SR212
- Denon DP-23F (yuck)
- Project Debut Esprit Carbon SB (its name was longer than the list of its merits)
- Technics SL-Q33 (very nice for the price I paid for it and fully automatic, wish I still had it)
- Lenco L75 (bog standard, changed only V-blocks; inoffensive but somewhat unfocused sound)
- Technics SL-1200 mk2 (didn't like it at all, it sounded slightly dull and slightly aggressive at the same time)
- Goldring Lenco GL75, fully fettled, upgraded tonearm and bearing etc. (lovely)
- Technics SL-110 (very sweet sounding thing and a design classic, still own it)
- Dual 1019 (still own it but it's on its way out)

With a little poetic licence (and hazy memory...) :)

from around 1982-85 - use of my Dad's Ferguson music centre - started my obsession with music
c. 1985 - a Sharp "midi" system with a linear tracking tonearm that - get this - played both sides of the LP! I thought it was the dogs, but actually it sounded sh!t...
(around 1987 I inherited a crappy old teak turntable. Wasn't really sure what it was some old Garrard thing. looked kind of cool though. Put it in the loft.)
1990 - Dual CS-505-2 - loved this deck, but I ended up smashing it to pieces. Long story!
1992 - 1999 - vinyl, schminyl... Shiny silvery CDs please! (Luckily I didn't sell the record collection!)
2000 - vinyl revival - Pro-Ject RPM4 (Still have it) - not a bad deck, and my mainstay for almost a decade
2009 - joined this forum, decided to resurrect that old Garrard thingy. Apparently a 401 is quite a good deck. SME tonearm not too shabby either. Learned all about setup, and how to rebuild/service a 401. Started playing with cartridges and headshells. Acquired a Technics SL-150 from DSJR - used this in the main system for a while. Picked up a vintage Rega Planar 3, with R200 arm - even the bias belt works. Still have it.
Past few years - not much vinyl playing - too risky with inquisitive ankle biters!
Now... time to sort out a decent plinth. After over 30 years and for sentimental reasons if nothing else the 401 is here to stay, and needs to be used!

Luxman PD264 without arm or dust cover. Saved this from going in a skip, it had got wet and the baseboard had warped, made a replacement baseboard from 6mm MDF and fitted a Hadcock GH228. Sill have this but the arm has been removed for...
LP12. I was always curiou about the LP12, so I bought one last year, no arm and basic power board, since bought a used Valhalla and am in the process of fitting the Hadcock to this. The Hadcock has a V15 type III with Jico SAS/SS fitted, had an OM10 on it at one stage.

As for the Luxman, I picked up a pristine Acos Lustre GST-1 for a song and have yet to fit this. I hesitate as the Acos requires a rather unusual cutout that nothing else will fit if I don't like it.

I forgot to mention two turntables I used for a short time.

Technics SL-5 (one of their "jacket-size" linear trackers) -- surprisingly good sound for something so dinky and could track literally anything regardless of condition (completely unfazed by warps and other issues). Was badly out of speed so I had to adjust it using the adjustment pots at the bottom (I had to buy a very long thin screwdriver to do this).

Luxman PD-282 -- a beautiful early DD turntable with an AC motor and an Acos-made tonearm that looked like Rega R200 but with a much better antiskating arrangement. I remember it for two reasons: 1) it was drifty even compared to other non-quartz DDs; 2) in their infinite wisdom, Luxman lined the inside of the plinth with aluminium foil for shielding, and a copper ground wire was screwed to this shield; this connection suffered from electrochemical corrosion quite badly which resulted in some very annoying ground hum. Of course, it was entirely possible to scrape off the corrosion, but it would give only a very temporary reprieve.

Let’s start off by saying I bought my Linn LP 12 in 1978 and now can say the only item left from the original player is the outer platter!

In the years since then I moved from the SME 3009 S2 arm moved on to a Grace arm the following year. In 1980 I had the 1st of 3 Ittoks fitted the first two after a couple of years developed bearing problems both replaced by Linn FOC. The last Ittok was fine when I sold it in 2004 on acquiring a Naim Aro which is still on my turntable.

I went through all the Linn upgrades till 1992 with the installation of the Cirkus bearing kit. Along the way went from the red button to the Valhalla in the early 1980’s. I went and had a Lingo mk1 installed when released in 1992?

When I had the Aro installed I couldn’t put my finger on it but I wasn’t happy with the Lingo went for an Armeggedon this to me was a big improvement.

2007 I moved on and had a Dynavector DV20L installed as my 3rd Karma was showing signs of wear. Coming to near retirement (2014) I had a Khan installed at the same time moved the DV20L to my son’s LP12 and had a Micro Benz Wood SL installed.

Soon after Tangerine Audio was formed Derek Jenkins ( RIP ) whom I’ve known for best part of 40 years and who has always looked after my turntable changed my Khan for a Karmen. Mark his able bodied partner told me that they had just developed a new sub chassis for the LP 12 so I had it installed in 2015 quickly followed by their new plinth which brings me up to date. In the same year I had a Kiseki Blue NS fitted so that is the story of my turntable.

Regards,

Martin

My first record deck was a Christmas present around 1981/82?. It was an Amstrad with (if memory serves) a built-in amp with the controls running parallel with the tonearm. Next was a Sony Midi System with CD player, cassette deck and turntable.
Although these two record players are probably not classed as ‘proper’ turntables I think I got more enjoyment from them than any of the turntables which followed. It was all about the music then and not the gear…

My first ‘proper’ deck (bought early 90’s) was a Rega Planar 2. Cartridge was whatever came with the Rega then I moved on to Ortofon’s. My first proper Phono Stage was a tiny Creek.

I bought a LP12 second hand from my dealer. It had the classic afromosia plinth, Cirkus, Valhalla and a MK1 Akito arm. It didn’t take long before I fell down the rabbit hole of upgrades:
From Akito MK1 to Akito MK2 to Ekos MK2 to Ekos SE
From Valhalla to Lingo 2 to Radikal
From original subchassis to Keel
From Trichord Dino MK2 to Uphorik to Urika
Other upgrades include Trampolin, new platter and changing the afromosia plinth to a Walnut one.

After circa 15 years ownership I’d had enough of the upgrades and the feeling of never been satisfied. I was fed up of that nagging doubt the deck could be better, ‘’if only I had the latest upgrade?’’.
In reality the more I spent on it the less I enjoyed listening to it. The higher the spec the more clinical and uninvolving I found the prestation. Another important thing to factor in was my mental health. I’ve suffered from depression since my mid-twenties. I’ve had numerous triggers over the years and money, or the lack of it being one such trigger. A couple of years back I’d got myself into some debt (nothing major but enough to play on my mind). After much thought I decided to sell my LP12*.

Well Tempered Versalex: I’d loved the look of the Well Tempered decks for years. I went for a demo of a couple of decks, including a couple of the latest Rega’s (RP6 and 8) which were very enjoyable. We moved onto the WT Versalex and I loved the look straight away. Listening to the opening few minutes of Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah the deal was sealed. Sublime spins to mind.

*I sold my LP12 to the dealer and bought the Versalex ( I also bought a Trilogy 906 Phono Stage which I love too) and cleared my debts with the rest of the cash. Upgrades…I bought a MCRU LDA linear power supply and that’s it.
I might try a few different mats as the original one does suffer from static cling.

So what does the future hold? I have no plans to change my deck but I plan to build my own Bigbottle Phono Stage later this year. Exciting times.

EDIT: Cartridges: I’ve only owned Ortofon cartridges, that trade-in scheme is hard to get out of. Laffin! I might try a Dynavector next though.

I've had comparatively few decks (I am discounting all the terrible cheap rubbish I had as a child). Started with a Systemdek IIX/900 back around 1993, RB250 and an AT95E, then later a Goldring 1012 if I recall correctly. I then progressed on to my first Voyd, which was an early model with the colour-matched (!) top plate (it was awful) and a square silver start/stop button, a prototype split-phase PSU and some odd wiring alterations! It was a non-runner when I acquired it. Guy Sargent refurbished and upgraded it for me with the Ref platter & bearing, the normal grey top plate and later power switch and a proper arm board in place of a ratty old bit of ally that had done duty until that point. I kept that until 2014, when financial issues meant it was sold. I cried!

After a long hiatus without a hi-fi system at all I was given an early Pro-Ject Essential by a friend of my partner two years ago, which I upgraded with the acrylic platter, external speed controller, clamp and some simple sorbothane feet, sounds really nice for what is a very simple deck really, and it works great in my (now) second system with a 1042 attached. Last year I was fortunate enough to be able to acquire another Voyd, this one is one of the last models I believe. Same Ref platter & bearing, and the normal split-phase PSU. Currently fitted with an Origin Live Encounter 3c and another Goldring 1042. This one is absolutely a keeper. Unless a full Reference crosses my path, that is....

Oh, and as a side project which will one day get finished, I have an Oxford Acoustics Crystal Reference that's waiting for a full refurbishment. My dream deck from my early days of hi-fi - no idea how it's going to sound, but the sheer size and weight of the thing plus that incredible two-part platter makes it a wonderful bit of eye-candy, even if it sounds terrible! I shall never part with it.

Here it is at home before being dismantled for the refurb:

I owned a Oxford crystal reference a good looking deck that could also sound good when partnered with the right arm, the sme tonearms never worked well on then for instance when I changed to a pink anniversary with the sme it was vastly better. The Oxford liked free sounding arms unipivots worked as did the Airtangent this was a classic combination at the time. The suspension rubbers always perished I messed about with many alternatives at the time.

The SME V was with the TT when I bought it (eBay) about 6 years ago. I knew that wasn't the ideal combination but it's a decent enough arm (although not to my taste) and did return me a bit of the purchase price when I sold it. An Airtangent or similar parallel tracker would be nice, but I don't see my budget stretching that far any time soon! It will probably be a conventional pivoted arm - if I can fit a 10" or even 12" on with a new armboard I'll probably go down that route.

The deck is currently dismantled and stored in my parent's music room so I can't see if that's possible or if I'll be restricted to a standard 9.5". I have both SME and Rega mount armboards so I have flexibility of choice with conventional arms!

The plan is to do a cosmetic and mechanical overhaul. I have already had the suspension parts seen to - my deck has the later alloy-encapsulated bushes, rather than the simpler cones, and I had an engineering company test the original material and refurbish with something of the same qualities. I need to decide on a suitable finish for the pillar and plinth - mine is the black ash finish rather than the more traditional wood veneer and I'm trying to decide if I want to do something a bit different with it, or keep it standard. I'm erring towards the former at the moment, something that updates the look without ruining it.

I'm in touch with snoopdog (of this parish and Hi-Fi Wigwam) who is also an ex-owner, and he has given me some advice on the desk's setup. The trickiest bit for me though is going to be finding a suitable space for it in my lounge! I don't have many spots that I could accommodate it in so it may have to wait a little longer before it gets the attention it deserves

Just the four for me in my hifi history.

Garrard GT35 when I got my first proper job and could afford a TT.
Michael Tecnodec about ten yours ago when I got back into hifi
Sold the Tecnodec about a year ago for a Technics SP10
Recently added a Garrard 401.

Think that this will be the end of my TT journey and now will start exploring for what will be suitable cartridges.

Just remembered also a Denon DP35F which I picked up at the Tunbridge Audio jumble sale two or was it three years ago. Now sat in the loft - I should probably put it up for sale as I cannot see it getting any use now.

About 1974, first job so hp plan on a system - some sort of BSR autochanger (I think)
1977? (1976?) Rega 2 with S shaped arm (ADC XLM - still miss that)
Early 90's? LP 12, black with Basik+ (about a year or so before Cirkus was introduced - didn't bother with the change as I was quite happy with the pre cirkus)
Same deck but added black Ittok (every thing was black in those days - still have my Nikon FM2 camera in black :))
Valhalla burned out, so replaced with Heed Orbit - wah hoo, 45rpm :yay:

Pricey at the time (I listened to a lot of decks and the only other one which appealed was the Systemdeck iix, but my wife persuaded me to buy the Linn), however brilliant value when I think of the number of years use.
I certainly wouldn't buy one now; and I ignore (for the most part) the outrageously expensive "must have" improved versions.

Ignoring the Sony music centre thing my parents had which I used when I was a teenager mine are:

Garrard GT35P (think that's the model) bought when I started work.
Dual CS505, can't remember model.
Pink Triangle Export, bought second hand from a bloke in Weston Super Mare.
Linn Sondek LP12, this was bought second hand too and this is the one in current use.

Also have a Pink Triangle Anniversary in a box that needs commissioning. Also still have the Export but it needs a bit of tlc. No idea what happened to the Garrard and Dual.

My first record deck was home built with a high end Technics/Matsushita direct drive motor and platter I was given by a family friend who was involved in getting Technics to sell into the UK. The arm was a Thorens one from a forgotten source and a Pickering cartridge from something my dad had.
Early 80s this was replaced with a Michel Focus One/LV V/Rega RB100.
Still run the Focus but it now has an LV Plus and Linn K9.
That is all !

Not had many and why I can remember them, except the one in the office, a jvc, I think, direct drive. First one was a run of the mill akai in a stacked separates set up. Then many years go by and I had a revolver that I was going to shoe horn in a stereogram. 401 in a two tier oak plinth, collaro2010 in a two tier oak plinth, lenco ptp, denon DP80, Sfax 12” arm.
In the garage awaiting building another lenco and a collaro, but I might never get around to them

My first was a Dansette Major (valve) inherited from my sister when she went to university, with a Garrard autochanger. This was modified to stereo using a stereo ceramic cartridge and a second (mullard 5-10) amplifier.
Then I got a Collaro turntable with Collaro arm from the local Odeon when it closed (with the RCA rack amplifiers). I made a 12" pick up to replace the Collaro arm at metalworking class.
Then I bought a Connoiseur BD1 kit and a NEAT G30B tonearm. This was quickly changed for a SME 3009 S2 (detachable headshell). In a home-made bright orange plinth, the cover came from school when the school record player (GL75) cover got damaged (I used chloroform from the science lab to "weld" it back together).
This was sold with all my records due to a move to Spain and I had no turntable for over 25 years.
I bought a Technics direct drive at the Audiojumble for a song. I then "had" to buy some vinyl to "test" it.
Then a friend offered me a Garrard SB86 because I mentioned I'd bought the Technics.
Another firiend gave me an Ion USB turntable (free).
I then bought a Project II at a boot fair. Enough!
But no...
I decided to make a unipivot pick up arm and so bought a Project turntable to support it.
Lastly, I bought a Dual 504 and this is the END. Absolutely, completely, honestly. I will not buy any more.
I hope the wife believes me. At least I don't still have them all.

Like you, my second deck was a Collaro 2010, but unlike you I cheated and fitted an SME 3009 S2.

I also had one. Can't recall what I did with it though.

It was about the same time as I bought my new Thorens TD150 Mk.I, circa 1973, to which I added a Decca International arm. That was a great deck!

If I remember correctly the Collaro arm used a piece of flexible material (plastic?) instead of a bearing.
It came in a sheet metal plinth (resonant - or what?) which was soon relaced with a home made wooden plinth made with the top cover from a school desk (rather nice solid birch) and some chipboad sides. I levelled it using small stacks of playing cards.
Unfortunately it ended up at the tip during a house move. Hindsight.

I too built a wooden plinth for my 2010, but it was far more rudimentary than yours.

Yes the Collaro arm was pretty poor. The father of a school chum of mine used a Collaro 2010 fitted with a Garrard TPA 10 arm:

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTyVLIUvQr907xt-8Bumx88pDfxT8w1q_racg&usqp=CAU

which was a significant improvement over the Collaro arm.
