I put bread in the toaster last nite and the pop up bit wouldn't stay down, after a couple of goes I gave it some force, I've no patience :steam: bang then a white ball of whatever nearly took my face off! Was that an electrical charge? It wasn't a flame,no heat or smell? Jim

Decades ago, I worked for Sunbeam Rowenta, we had an advert on TV for our toasters, Music was Golden Brown by the Stranglers, until, it was realised what it was all about.
I've just remembered, at one time I was in charge of the toaster testing machine, true!

It was the connection to heroin that was the problem. I believe that there is brown heroin.
The band claimed that the song's lyrics were akin to an aural Rorschach test and that people only heard in it what they wanted to hear, although this did not prevent persistent allegations that the lyrics alluded to heroin.
In his book The Stranglers Song By Song (2001), Hugh Cornwell states "'Golden Brown' works on two levels. It's about heroin and also about a girl." Essentially the lyrics describe how "both provided me with pleasurable times."
What was it about? I've heard two suggestions.

I was working at Sunbeam Rowenta when Findus brought out Crispy Pancakes, my boss thought that these would be good for our toasters. He went and bought some, wanted to be the first to test them out, he was not impressed!

Seeing my Boss's reaction, I didn't try them.
My job was a very enjoyable one as Project Engineer in the R&D Dept. At some point all the products had to be tested with food, Coffee makers, sandwich toasters, deep fat fryers, grills, slow cookers, etc. etc. Of course the resultant food had to be consumed! Later, was even better, we got a Home Economist, she tested recipes, we of course had to try the food.

Most people have to work to put food on the table. To get paid for eating the food that's been put on the table, that sounds like a dream job to me :)
Not if it involves eating Findus Crispy Pancakes.
We got fed some tripe as kids (literally) but we only ever had those things once. Even the cats weren't interested in them and that's always a bad sign.

I eat tripe regularly along with pigs’ feet - Chinese recipes can make both very tasty, also pigs intestines are a delicacy in many Sichuan restaurants including one I regularly go to in Egham!

When your cat would rather lick its own arse than eat tripe, tells me all I need to know. Thanks for the heads up about Sichuan restaurants Tom! So they have one in Egham? I wonder if there's a town called Sichuan where you can get ham'n'eggs? (sorry). I would eat there.

Most revolting Chinese thing I ever ate was duck tongue in jelly. Managed to get it down but my colleague was not so stoic and had to run to the bog and chuck up. Some Chinese food is a bridge too far. I'd give the pigs trotters a go but the tripe is out.

Raw. uncut heroin is known as 'Golden Brown'. But as I have said, there is another interpretation (suggested by Pete Townshend of The Who), which I won't elaborate for reasons of delicacy.

No! I had heard of eggs cooked in child's urine, and knowing of it would prevent me from eating it. The same with "bird's nest soup", knowing what it is prevents me from eating it.

My father went to Taiwan on business and at the welcome meal scoffed his way through a whole plate of chicken feet. He had no idea what they were until the host ordered another portion for him.
They also had a couple of brasses there who would take turns to come and sit and chat with him, the idea was that at the end of the evening you pick one to take back to your hotel. My father claimed that he gave the excuse that he was too tired from the jet lag, so as not to cause offence.
