View Full Version : Supertweeters if you just stream ?

I only stream from spotify and you tube, my speakers have a range to 30khz.
Was looking at a few interesting threads on supertweeters , but CD cuts out at 22khz. Am I right in thinking I’m not likely to benefit from use of supertweeters ?

At 70 years old I cant hear that high, but they still make a difference adding an expansive air to the music.

Red book 'CD' wav files from a dedicated music server. No oversampling.

Very interesting yes, thanks for sharing.
Im a big fan of a subwoofer and I think that does give my system better mid range and treble as well as a couple of octaves of good bass as my little tablettes only go down to 55hz.
I dont use open baffle design or a single full range driver. I’m also using an amp that uses DSP to correct the room response. Its hard to imagine what the effect of a super tweeter will do in my system but I get the principle. Right now I do think my system has good top end sparkle, but i’m always interested in pushing limits.

Yes saw these Grant, they also do a model up from this which is encased and has an adjustable crossover and good quality speaker terminals. However this would be forward facing and maybe better off with theses tiddlers up firing.
Do you point yours forwards or up ?

Ive tried the takets on 57s firing vertically on the rear worked well.
My son now has them on his frugels again at the rear firing vertically....they are excellent.
Dont ask me how or why they do what they do-enhanced midrange and bass articulation but the make a noticeable difference.

Suck it and see. I had the Takets, now running Tannoy ones.
Some evidence that they work through comb filtering causing perceptible phase shifts/other wave artifacts in the audible portion of the frequency range, most people seem to like the effect.

Sent from my iPad using TapatalkDepends what you mean by supertweeter, the ones that come in at 12-16khz will still contribute obviously.

Do you notice that the supertweeters are much more additive to your vinyl listening than to digital ? Or is that a hard call?

I use Focal Pro HF102. Good price and come in at about 105dB without the horn. Here they are mounted experimentally close to the voice centres of the mid range and existing tweeters.

In theory thats only around half an octave on a CD cut out and my existing tweeters go to 30khz. However i can get the room loading argument.

Yes and it might be the treble lift in that region from a second tweeter that causes all the audible effects.

my existing tweeters go to 30khz.
You already have supertweeters then. And if properly integrated you won't get any comb filtering effects.
I doubt room loading has anything to do with it.
Also I'm mainly vinyl, probably not the best person to comment on digital.

You cant hear that high so how can it add an expansive air to the music!!? I cant hear above about 11khz so talk of supertweeters is a bloody nonsense. you cant hear it so its adding nothing to the enjoyment of the music.
I was looking at some B & W floorstanders yesterday. £3300 and not a super tweeter anywhere in sight
Do the hearing test as I dont think most people have got a clue what a continuous 15khz tone sounds like. You wont be missing an expansive air above that.
I think I can enjoy the music just fine with my middle aged hearing. Ive got 6 tweeters on my pa speakers which I mix with another two on my Royds. I dont feel Im missing much important information

See post #11. A sound doesn’t need to be in the audible domain to have an effect in the audible domain. The question is whether you like what they do, not whether they do anything.

The chances are that it probably is audible, and below 10kHz

In some cases. The Takets were genuinely inaudible to me on their own but had an undoubted effect in combination. Similarly my Tannoy STs are inaudible but affect the combined signal. Others such as Townshends are audible on their own.

You've missed the point I think Martin. Output from supertweeters should not be audible, if it is they're not implemented correctly.
It's not what they sound like that matters, it's the effect they have on what you actually can hear that's important. Try listening to a pair with main speakers, then disconnect them and the effect they are having vanishes. It's definitely a noticeable thing, even though you are not actually hearing the supertweeters themselves (if used correctly).
I can't hear much above 10kHz, but the effect of supertweeters working at above 15kHz is audible to me.

Exactly :)
My much revered tutor Mr. Wanden reported a test, in '69, that blind people who could not hear above 10k could perceive the difference between band restricted to 10k and open to full bandwidth sources.
Geoff, it is what you mean by "hear" that is crucial, but if a super tweeter is indistinguishable as a separate source, the difference with and without can be audible

The emperor has some new clothes. You can feel good about your supertweeter being capable of more but mind control is very persuasive when you feed it feel good thought patterns.
So youngsters with the hearing of a bat are already having a better experience than me then. You need to ask how it was for them because you cant spend money to be young again.
There are some ST threads with people trying to explain the leading edge of notes and one of the funniest comments is
"If you build it ? They will come.:D"
Im on the sceptical side of things...Help me see the light in born again moment......I believe brother :)

Skepticism can be healthy but when you deny the science you might as well join the fruit loop brigade that have caused a measles epidemic in New York State.
Waves of any sort - including sound waves - interact with each other. This applies regardless of frequency and a sound wave doesn't care whether you can hear it or not when it interacts with other waves at different frequencies.
Supertweeters have an audible effect, this may not be quite for the reasons that some of their proponents claim, but to deny this is a denial of the science involved.

very much so, the risks from the vaccine are minute compared to the damage measles can inflict. ..and usually on the young who dont have much say, just because mum and dads religion or the red some rubbish onlne

I dodged the Measles bullet........just, when I was a nipper. It nearly killed me, The old man saw fit to allow a priest to give me last rites and he was an athiest. I survived though and here I am to annoy you lot! :)
Anyway, back to supertweeters.
think it only came out in 68(vaccine). The current mmr was I think in 88 or thereabouts,.. anyways, yes supetweeters do affect the sound to a degree, if implemented correctly.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the bargain Panasonic mini system that I bought recently has super tweeters built into the speakers!
Don’t laugh about it being an all in one mini system, it’s attracted some excellent reviews, and I have to say I’m loving it, ok, possibly not quite as much as the Kavent/Usher combination, but good nonetheless.

My speakers have ribbon tweeter, I believe these give a similar effect to supertweeters. Anyway, the difference is clearly audible. I would'nt go back to standard tweeters.
