View Full Version : Would someone like to make me an armboard please?

I require an armboard making for a Pioneer PLC-590. I guess it makes sense to go with 6mm aluminium as that’s what I believe is the norm.

Arm is a Rega style single fixing hole.
The arm mounting hole diameter should be 23mm to 24mm.
Centre of mounting hole to centre of platter should be 222mm.

Anyone with the time and equipment who would like some beer tokens....?

You need AoS's very own Speedy Steve. See https://theartofsound.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?83-Magna-Audio

I’d like to experiment with different materials I think, so although I know Steve would produce something outstanding, initially I’m looking for something more budget.

Alternatively if anyone had any plans or dimensions for me to work from I may be able to knock something up myself. It would be the old school method of hacksaw and file rather than cnc milled though

On my journey down the M1 I thought of an easy way to mark out the hole position for the tonearm. Unfortunately I thought of it way too late and my Dr Feickert protractor is still up north!

You could ask Tim (spider (https://theartofsound.net/forum/member.php?15135-Spider)). He has a CNC machine and has made several armboards from various materials.

This is graft! Not helped at all by the fact that the heating appears to be stuck on at ‘tropical’ setting!

do you have the mdf block that goes under the aluminium plate?

I have a block which sits within the cutout, it may well be MDF. It has had a lot of material removed to accept a tonearm directly on to said block!

yes thats it,i just wondered if you had it,shame that i sold mine a few weeks back,i could have made one for you very easily,i made 4 for mine for various tonearms, panzerholz proved to be far superior.

I had a quick browse for Panzerholz yesterday but couldn’t find any blanks large enough, please point me in the right direction....

I’m currently looking for a 23mm drill bit/hole cutter for the tonearm hole, any recommendations on which to go for?

i used a starret cutter for mine, for panzerholz try this link, http://www.ltlewis.co.uk/products.htm
he may have some offcuts big enough for the job.

I recommend the Starret hole saws and appropriate Arbor
Looks like 24mm is the nearest size
Use a drill press or pedestal drill for best results

I decided I wanted 23mm to ensure the best fit so ordered a different brnaded hole cutter. Hopefully it is up to the job.

More hours spent today filing the board square and to size. Wish I had access to a milling machine!

I ordered mine cut to exact size so all I had to do was the drilling and polish the top surface

That would’ve been a better option. At least it’s cost me nothing other than a few quid for a hole cutter (free material and free labour due to being quiet in work). Will take the Dr Feickert protractor back down with me next week to mark out the hole for the tonearm.

Drilled and ready. I just need to finish it with some scotch-brite.

Jamie did I read somewhere that you preferred the armboard mounted on some legs rather than atop of the MDF board? Do you have any pictures?

I’m finally back home and now fitting the tonearm. Luckily it all seems to fit as planned. Still needs a clean up and the board requires polishing/brushing. Hopefully get chance to hear it playing some music this weekend.
