I have a birch plywood turntable plinth.

Looking for a simple way to protect/finish it.

Is beeswax or some over wax suutable?
Apply, buff to a soft sheen?
No dissasenbly of turntable required?

Good or bad idea?

Use a penetrating wax such as Briwax, very easy to use.

Try Danish oil - easy to apply and gives a lovely rich sheen while keeping the wood grain visible. Also provides a nice hard protective finish.

Bear in mind that applying a wax or oil based finish may make it difficult to use a lacquer or varnish at a later time should you wish to. And vice versa of course.

Also bear in mind that the chap who actually made the plinth (I believe you bought it from another member of this forum) very likely applied a finish themselves.

Philip, you might consider a combination wax-oil finish like Osmo Poly-X, which would give you the benefits of both a penetrating oil and a wax finish. I recall it being mentioned in a few threads here, by folks using it for the same application as yours and for speaker cabinets. It is supposed to be great stuff. Made in Germany, quality product by all accounts.

just remember wax isnt a major protector, its more aesthetic. a sealer like polyurethane varnish etc will give better protection . but if its just to get a nice look and you dont mind renewing now and then there are nice waxes out there. it is helpful to know what is already on the wood in question tho as some finishes dont go well over others.

you could spray laquer it, if your prepared to remove the deck first(not difficult) this stuff is good and fairly cheap. warm can in water first and shake well. hang the plinth up and spray in well ventilated dust free garage or shed. you can rub down and give a few coats.
