Good Sounding Budget CD Players

Which make/model are good? The type that sounds very good as a stand-alone cd player, without the need of using a separate dac.

Price wise - £250-£400.

Marantz cd6006uk, currently £329 at Sevenoaks. Excellent player, tricky to buy anything new that's better under £500.

You would be hard pushed to beat one of these for VFM https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Meridian-506-CD-player/323701260308?hash=item4b5e194014:g:rfEAAOSw9Clca-lu:rk:1:pf:0 you just need to make sure that it reads CD's easily, the Philips mechanism can get sticky due to the wrong type of grease being used from new, meaning the laser stops positioning correctly and starts mis-reading. Although it can be fixed.

How they compare with newer CD Players I cannot say but I love my Meridian 508.

I have been using a Arcam 23T for years it needs to be isolated with feet on the bottom and a book on the top, it sounds good.

The problem with the old arcams is the tray starts sticking on them, then breaks. Depends really how much you want to spend. Personally i would not buy a Phillips mech but thats my opinion. I don't think any are rubbish.

+1, they're very good, got a refurbed one for £249 on ebay. The USB socket on the front is a useful feature to.

The sticking tray is easy to fix. Actually it’s not the tray sticking it’s the square section drive belt that slips. It’s easy to replace, a fifteen minute job.

i got one of these s/h at a good price
blown away with it and makes a great transport to and i've had plenty of serious cdps and transports/dacs over my 35 year hifi road traveled ...heavy little bugger to for its size.
