Hi,

I get a great deal of enjoyment from listening to music, and over the years have found that my enjoyment has become greater as the quality of the equipment I use to listen to my music gets better. However, I've always had either a very tight budget (student), or other things to spend my money on. So my hi-fi system has been built on a tight budget. In spite of that I've managed to put together a system that I enjoy listening to which is the main thing.

However, that doesn't mean I avoided the hi-fi irritation. That itch I want to scratch .... the one that sits between my shoulder blades and taps out "now I've changed the speakers, do you think a change of amplifier would just make things sound a little bit better." Its the same annoyance that sits on my shoulder when I look through ebay listings and see an item I read about years ago, now going for a bargain price; the annoyance whispers: why not get it and see what its like.

As I post here, I am not looking for a cure - I'm beyond that. Rather some conversation with fellow sufferers. Others with their own itches to scratch.

Hi Reg,
Welcome to the AoS - there's quite a few of us here who have indulged or often think about indulging in the stuff we couldn't get first time round. Some of us actually did get it first time around, stupidly sold it & are busy looking for it again!

Tell us about your system & tastes in music.

Thank you for the welcome.

I've posted this:

Which I think answers some of your questions.

I caught the hi-fi bug when I was at university in the late 80s. I'd get a grant at the beginning of a three month term and found that if I did the usual student thing of going into hermit mode for the third month, I could afford a second hand or Richer sounds foray at the beginning of the term.

When I got my first job after university, one of the first things I did was go out and buy myself a brand new pair of speakers: TDL RTL2. Since then it just been a gradual upgrade thing. Couple of hundred pounds here. Another couple there. To be honest, bargain hunting is part of the pleasure for me.

As for music, I like music to sit and listen to rather than get up and dance to. My main criteria is that the performers can actually play their instruments. Artificial bands, where the instrumentation is just the jingly sound in the background that some 'talent' sings over, leave me cold. I have a particular loathing for people who cover a classic piece of music by putting a drum beat in the background.

Is Reggie your proper name?

No. My first name is Rob. I got the nickname Reggie back in the early nineties, when I was posting to newsgroups.
