Well judging by the likes of Exposure, Rotel and now Audiolab with their new all singing all dancing CDP just been released

Could be the candle burning brightest before it goes out. I think we must be into the last few years of new CD player construction. Cars don't come with them anymore, that's always a tell-tale sign. Remember when a tape deck stopped being listed as an option? That's where we are at now with CD I think.
Yup I was a bit shocked when mine didn't have one but have to say its better without.

some relatives recently bought a skoda and automatically thought it would have cd , they are most annoyed it does not . they are senior citizens and not familiar with anything else

I take your point and agree (as CD as a music carrier is defo on its way out), *but* the absence of CD facility on car stereos now has as much to do with cutting costs, as anything else. The fact is, it's cheaper simply to omit it and allow the driver's own smartphone to supply the music instead.
However, if you go into your nearest Halfords (for example), and look at the better quality standalone head units for sale, a lot of them still have CD facility, such as the Kenwood that's fitted in my own car. I wouldn't have bought it otherwise, as I currently down own a smartphone:)

They were losing sales because there were either no cup holders or not enough cup holders. It was literally a deal breaker. So I think if enough people still wanted a cd player they would provide them. But I don't think anyone under the age of 35 would care. Under 25 they won't even know what it is.
I was initially a bit fed up my car didn't have a cd player but I enjoy putting tracks on a memory stick to play in the car, takes me back to making up a mix tape.

Yup, for sure. That's quite funny about the cup holder!:D
However, there are millions of CDs out there, and still enough folks around who want to listen to their music on them, especially in the car, which is why, to facilitate that, if you're willing to shell out for and fit a quality aftermarket head unit [and which will sound *so* much better than the cheap crap fitted to most modern cars, even expensive ones], there's still plenty of choice available:cool:
How long that remains the case, however, remains to be seen...

For sheer SQ, there's still nothing to touch a nice Alpine tape deck, playing well-recorded music from a quality Chrome tape (e.g TDA SA or BASF Chromdioxide Extra II), through a nice pair of amps and speakers. Knocks ANY form of digital car audio into a cocked hat...

Brings back memories and the SQ was very good, I had a Clarion CD/FM Radio in my XR2 (Mk1) and that was brillliant

That's the kind of thing I'm talking about, and at the moment, they're in plentiful supply:)
However, look at the price for something that's merely average... And that's the thing. You'll be lucky if the (massively) mass-produced streaming crap fitted into most cars these days costs manufacturers £1.90, never mind £119.90!;)
The Kenwood unit in my car cost nearly £1200... And even in a Merc, what had been factory fitted before it was a piece of UTTER SHITE in comparison.

If I didn't need the (superb) Sat-Nav, DAB radio and Internet facilities, on my Kenwood head unit, I'd fit a quality vintage cassette deck in the car and make up tapes to play on it from my system [especially from vinyl] on the Nakamichi BX-300 (no Dolby NR - just wide open, and with as much input level as the tape could handle without saturating), bias and EQ set spot on, and it would sound stunning!:cool:

Yup I opted for the standard Toyota version. Its not too shabby either. Nice touch screen unit. I used to play cds of my audio books in my last car so was a bit stymied for 5 muns til I got them from audible onto me phone. Also got a stick with some music. Not gonna blow your mind but sounds good enough for me.

As my Skoda has a USB input and will accept USB HD units so long as all the Tracks are Flac and the HD Fat 32 I use a a 2 TB USb HD unit with around 54,000 tracks on it . So far when I shove the head unit to shuffle all music I have not had any problems with music choice or quality and I never have to take my hands off the wheel to to change the CD. As a bonus the Skoda also has blue tooth so I can send Radio Paradise to the unit and an additional SD card slot so I can put any new music i buy on that and switch to listening to just my new music if I want to .

Still plenty of drivers over the age of 35 though.
Agree that cup holders are a handy thing - If I were in charge of designing car interiors, I would certainly stop having them fitted with players that use the 'slot' type loaders and use conventional loading trays as used in domestic players. These could double as cup holders, and you'd be the envy of all your fellow pensioner drivers.
My van has four cup holders, a folding tray to put your butties on or a small jigsaw puzzle (no more than 30 pieces), two bins which are large enough for a flask or 70cl bottle of spirits, and still has space for a CD player. Although the music can be a bit of a distraction when you're pissed and trying to complete a jigsaw.

Visited a cousin of mine yesterday, and he's got a brand new car. Looks like a Jaguar - it's got leather seats, it's got a CD player, player, player, player!
I'm part of the modern trend for far Too Many Take Away meals, so when it comes to cars a Cup Holder is critical, my Travel Flask Cup teeters around worryingly when placed on the Cup Holder when driving.
I can see the Travel Flask being a vital accessory to take to any future car viewings, if it don't fit it's going to be deal breaker.
But what the UK Auntomotive Industry really needs today, is a option to have a Dashboard Glove Compartment turned into a Kebab Warmer. :mental::lol:

As for CD's a car feels a lonely place without a few CD's stashed in the door panels and centre consul storage box.

Years ago i bought a new Skoda and the glove box was a chiller for your coke or water. very handy in summer

My 2018 Ford Kuga has USB, Bluetooth and a CD Player but strangely no Aux In.
I take the Micro SD Card out of my Fiio M9 DAP and put it into a Kingston SD Card to USB adapter - when I want to listen to my Flacs.

I confess to never having seen that film, all the way through, but I did see the lead actor (Robin Askwith) in Coronation Street recently. The years haven't been kind, it's definitely the face of someone with a lot to confess.
Sorry about the thread drift, I wonder if you can get the "Confessions" soundtrack on CD? No doubt there'll be some copies on eight track knocking about.
