View Full Version : When is a hifi not a hifi .....?

Today, I have been playing with this:

It's a Pioneer NS-F10 'B&O-alike' lifestyle midi wallmount system, er, thing.

When you put your hand near the CD player, the little doors slide open automatically in a Star Trek stylee. How cool is that....

Did I mention the little sliding doors?

I did?

OK, but they are very cool.

The main unit consists of a Cd player and FM tuner. The second unit (on the right) is a CD recorder (why? seems a strange thing to have on a 'lifestyle' system - maybe a cappucino maker would have been a better bet).

The amplifier sits under the subwoofer and is connected to the main unit by a long umbilical.

The two little satellite speakers look dinky and are really quite appallingly poor in every possible way.

I bought the system in a house clearance shop for £8 (£8 well spent for the endless hours of door sliding fun - I'm a sucker for crap like that :)).

When I moved house, the little Pioneer was my only source of music until the house was sorted enough to set up the main hifi.

So what's my point?

Well, it doesn't sound too bad. Not great, but not shite either. As I said, the plastic speakers are rubbish, but the sub does almost all the work so the sonic damage isn't quite a great as you might expect. You can hang it on the wall, hide the sub under the sideboard and put the little speakers either on the windowsill or on wall brackets. It takes up virtually no space at all. And it's got little slidy doors. They open, they close, they open, they close.....

My wife says it's a smashing system and wonders why 'proper' hifi isn't as good. When friends come round she shows them the slidy doors and they always (and I mean always) go 'wow, that's really neat - and it hardly takes up any space'. When she takes them through to the lounge to gaze upon the technological wonder that is my main system, the response is generally one of barely disguised pity - their eyes say 'you poor woman - is there not a support group you can join or a refuge you can escape to?'.
Then she asks me why I can't have a normal, more socially acceptable hobby, like disembowelling animals or arson.

And all because manufacturers of 'serious' hifi don't understand the importance of slidy doors.

Bastards.

:)

Martin

Thought for today: I need chips, now!

Does the door go "Pssshew" like in Star Trek too?

Yes.

Oh, sorry - no, that was me making the 'pssshew' noise.

It's more of a whirr.

Serious manufacturers of HiFi grade audio do make kit with slidy doors - they're called B&O!!!!!!

Compare the modern version of the Ouverture plus 'Lab 8000's to a mid-fi setup (Arcam and whatever bling boxes Sevenoaks are flogging this month). I know the B&O is more expensive, but it'll sound better, be FAR better built and generally reliable too (those doors only ever gave trouble if the runners got severely contaminated and Beopeople are too houseproud on the whole).

B&O have moved on from the Ouverture days and their current music storage/replay setup is even more space-age. I just like twiddling too much with the gear to even consider it sadly (for the wife).

I am deeply, deeply grateful that Susy is happy to trade-up convenience for better sound....

Yes, Sony understand.

My DVP-S7700 has a lovely flippy-whirry front panel. I swear it makes better music because of that.

Hold on dave, B&o sounds good, I think you must have heard different b&o to me, I went to a customers house not long ago he dragged me into the lounge to see his £30000 b&o system - big conical speakers - the most aweful sounding hifi, I was actually speachless at how shit it sounded. Fortunatly he took my speachlessnes as a reaction of awe at quality, not the oposite!

... Or is that actually the overture system you speak of?

Well Hamish, it just goes to show how utterly cr@p your PMC's are sounding in your room, because those that have heard these B&O speakers properly set up, rate them VERY highly indeed as proper top end speakers..

The Beosound 9000 in the background was gimmiky, but huge fun watching the transport flying from one disc to another...

Don't get ya dave, my pmc's in my old house and since I have moved them in this house are sounding just fine...
I would say if that is the case It must have been the room the b&o's were in when I heard them ... They sounded completely un balanced and mighty gravely!

The Beolab 5 speakers are fantastic apparently. I have heard the models below and they sounded very good...I was shocked at just how good. I could have asked to hear the 5s but I didn't have the time and I didn't want to get the sales woman too excited.

Well, there you go, sounds like this chap wasn't getting what he should have been out of his set up ... Maybe it was just broken... I can't remember the cd he put on now but it was one I had in my collection. I remember feeling quite sorry for the chap after spending so much money. I think he bought a sonos system to plug into it in the end... We had a right faff trying to get some kinda 7 pin din cable for him if I remember rightly ... In fact I think someone at one of the other shops ended up fudging a 5 pin one for him... Anyway I digress... It sounded poo and that's that :)

Its all about set up and having the right system in the right room. It doesn't matter whether it's B&O or anything else if the rooms not right then it sounds like poo.

HiFi shows are like that as well, great systems in the wrong room result = poo !

Pmc's in a bay window ... ? Heh, it wasn't that bad to be fair..

Yeah it's becoming very obvious to me how much the room is at play ... I got my ushers running in the main system now... They sounded hugely different in the bay too ... They sound super "sweet" on stands where the pmc's were

When her ? :) friends ...

I have similar issues relating to our 42 inch LCD TV and surround system, plus the hi-fi kit. I'm not allowed to use my bigger speakers.

Having said that, I don't think even the missus would go back to a small TV now, and despite the moaning, I think she thinks the hi-fi set up is now one of the best she's ever heard.

I have hooked the Croft Power to the AV and my wife has nothing to say.
And I don't buy anything like a "pshhhhht" kit : an amplified iPod dock is all anybody can hope for a secondary system: more than enough for listening to the radio hits. ;)
