Today, I have been playing with this:
It's a Pioneer NS-F10 'B&O-alike' lifestyle midi wallmount system, er, thing.
When you put your hand near the CD player, the little doors slide open automatically in a Star Trek stylee. How cool is that....
Did I mention the little sliding doors?
I did?
OK, but they are very cool.
The main unit consists of a Cd player and FM tuner. The second unit (on the right) is a CD recorder (why? seems a strange thing to have on a 'lifestyle' system - maybe a cappucino maker would have been a better bet).
The amplifier sits under the subwoofer and is connected to the main unit by a long umbilical.
The two little satellite speakers look dinky and are really quite appallingly poor in every possible way.
I bought the system in a house clearance shop for £8 (£8 well spent for the endless hours of door sliding fun - I'm a sucker for crap like that :)).
When I moved house, the little Pioneer was my only source of music until the house was sorted enough to set up the main hifi.
So what's my point?
Well, it doesn't sound too bad. Not great, but not shite either. As I said, the plastic speakers are rubbish, but the sub does almost all the work so the sonic damage isn't quite a great as you might expect. You can hang it on the wall, hide the sub under the sideboard and put the little speakers either on the windowsill or on wall brackets. It takes up virtually no space at all. And it's got little slidy doors. They open, they close, they open, they close.....
My wife says it's a smashing system and wonders why 'proper' hifi isn't as good. When friends come round she shows them the slidy doors and they always (and I mean always) go 'wow, that's really neat - and it hardly takes up any space'. When she takes them through to the lounge to gaze upon the technological wonder that is my main system, the response is generally one of barely disguised pity - their eyes say 'you poor woman - is there not a support group you can join or a refuge you can escape to?'.
Then she asks me why I can't have a normal, more socially acceptable hobby, like disembowelling animals or arson.
And all because manufacturers of 'serious' hifi don't understand the importance of slidy doors.
Bastards.

Thought for today: I need chips, now!
