Hi Guys

The question as to why people can't pack electronics to survive the post is one that bothers me a lot. Recently I have been the victim of another seller who thinks they can pack and despite my guidance which was mostly ignored, they are upset that I think what they did was not up to snuff

So would you be happy opening a box to find some bubble wrap a little bit of scrunched up newspaper and a box too small to offer any real protection all around delicate vintage electronics. So tuner removed from box and I find it has taken a side knock and the fascia is now moved sideways enough to foul up buttons etc. However the good news is I can and have taken it apart ans realigned the fascia and it works. However one of the display bulbs is dead (okay in photos taken by seller)

So can someone supply me with or point me in the right direction to get some or one display bulb to suit a Sansui 517 tuner. I don't know the voltage but it says Stanley MTI underneath it. It is a friction fit and pushes down on two metal spikes. I have swapped a good bulb into the spot this one was in so the left VU meter is lit now. However I would like the display to be fully lit.

Hard to photograph but here are a few shots of it.....

Neil,
I have bought these before. It's going to take some detective work to track down the source though - somewhere I have a list of places I've bought bulbs from for tuners & receivers.

You could try German Ebay while I'm looking. It may take a day or two. Do you have the laminated circiut diagram & parts list that came with Sansui gear? It could help us to find the right value component.

It was supplied with a circuit schematic that's all + instruction book, so no service manual which would have those details.

Amazingly it works still.

A few days is okay Chris. It would be good to have a source for tuner bulbs, you could add it to the library section of the forum.

I don't speak or read German so I would not really know what I was looking for or at..

Neil,
Can I confirm that this is a dial light?
That is, to illuminate the tuning dial specifically?

Yes it is one of four identical bulbs that sit above the top of the tuning scale display.

Neil,

I think the one you need is an 8 volt / 300 milliamp bulb. I'm not 100% certain as my notes are not in as good condition as I'd have hoped. I've some more stuff somewhere.

A good source of bulbs, though not the type you need, apparently.......

But it may be useful for other models.
Also some good tips about how to get at the bulbs on Marantz & Sansui receivers.

...........more info to come, I promise.

Try Dave Wojo - he usually has a good supply of lamp bulbs including wedge and fuse types:

His email address is:
dwoj069@msn.com

He also sells stuff on Ebay:
http://myworld.ebay.com/dgwojo/

I'm struggling to find the notebook I need. I'll have to carry on looking tomorrow, but try Dave in the meantime.

Cheers

Neil,
Here's your man
Ebay seller ch5oh
Email: heinz.deppermann@cas-germany.com

He'll do you a full set of 4 lamps for 8 euros.
I got some things from him a couple of years ago (both for Sansui & Marantz gear) - he will communicate in English, no problem.

For future reference, and just in case supplies run out, I understand it's relatively easy to fit the sockets for the screw in bulbs that were fitted to the 'G-series' receivers to the 517 & it's brethren. Apparently, you can install them & the difference is almost impossible to see - even to the (Sansui) trained eye until the unit is almost completely stripped. The 'G-series' bulbs are much more plentiful and commonly available.

Neil,
Let me know how you get on, won't you? As I suspect I may be in the market for some dial lamps myself in a short while (though probably not this type).
Cheers

My secret source of vintage tuners and especially receivers is now revealed - Ebay Germany.
You need to watch out though, as Paypal is not so ubiquitous there as it is here - many sellers won't use it & most don't advertise that they will - it always pays to check first if you want to use it. Most sellers in Germany speak, read & type English far better than you or I!!

Happy hunting!
