Just been down the supermarket. What a pleasure it is at 0900 on a weekday. Only about 10 people in there including a crazy woman who couldn't find the Weetabix (I found it for her). They had some apple danishes still left! Bought the lot.
Bitterly cold and started snowing as I was on my way back although stopped again now. Not back in work until Tuesday so it can do whatever it likes.

Yes, that's what I look like when I'm feeling despondent - another hour wasted trying to learn how to put pictures on forum. Adrian (AJSk2fly) kindly sent me a very detailed and comprehensive 'how to', but my laptop doesn't seem to do things the way everyone else's does.
So maybe a good shave will cheer me up. Oh, and listening to Steve Gadd Band Live at Rochester. A picture of the album cover will not be appearing on the pages of 'Musical Compositions' anytime soon :(

Does he have two different coloured eyes? We used to have one walk past our house, very friendly, but deaf as a post. He had odd coloured eyes, and I'm told deafness a thing with them.

had a small fall of snow last night. looked to be on for good at one point but it stopped abruptly again. to start getting a little warmer tomorrow, although more snow falls are likely.

A bucket of water outside the garage has a slab of ice on it about one and a half inches thick. When I was a kid one inch was my safe minimum for going on ponds, probably more like 6 inches these days.

Exactly the same here! Just had a 2-ton delivery of hardwood logs, for the wood burner, to make sure we're well stocked up, if the weather turns *really* bad, so am about to stack them in the wood store. Should give me a nice appetite for lunch!:cool:

The three ponds belonged to the local farmer, and they didn't feel luxurious when you went through the ice. My brother did once on the old gravel pit - 8 feet of water and a four foot kid aren't a good combination. Luckily one of the bigger kids got a stick and dragged him out, saved me from being an only child :)
they say 2" is safe to walk on. Personally I would want a bit more... maybe double to be safe
We had no ponds unless you count Sefton park lake. We had Lewis's field which was totally unremarkable but suitable for cricket or football. You had to climb over an iron fence to get in though and one time my cousin impaled his arm on the spikes. Went right through, claret everywhere. We were very upset because he was our best bowler.
They built houses on it back in the 1980s and that was the end of that.
a biggish one near me(at times). it varies on the rainfall, but can on occasion come over the road. half loaf pond is its local name. if its been a dry winter it can become quite small:eyebrows:
I've posted this before.... Up in Glasgow, I had a beautiful park, within 10 mins walk of home, with a lovely waterfall and pond, where you could hire boats and go round the pond, or over to a small 'island' in the middle. Tons of fun for a teenager!:)

We should count ourselves lucky to have these places on our doorstep - these days, because of the growth of our towns and cities, such places are no longer within easy reach of kids.Also if you were up to no good, like Marco and the rest of the "soapdodgers", you were left alone much more, as any outraged citizen had to find a phone box or go home to call the "scuffers", if they could be arsed. Different now that everyone has a mobile phone.

Partly right, during WW2 the house that was here was bombed and destroyed. Dad bought the land and built a new house, that would have been about 1947, so that is how old the door is.

Here we are not out of the woods on that until half way through March. Although we are quite high up. But for you up there I'd guess it is more like end of May before you're safe?

There's some three story buildings round here that still have the original windows in the top floors despite being almost 200 years old.

My own house is 1936, still the original Crittal windows, front door and garage doors, all pretty good.

Original owners must have been the envy of all the street, having a garage. But I suppose secure, off road parking would have been just as important then, to keep the thieving little street urchins from nicking your honking horn and picnic basket.

They are only very small houses, but nearly every house in the road was built with a garage, the few that weren't, had a space and one was built later. House cost £650 in 1936 according to the deeds.
Chances are that houses that old are listed buildings, and to replace those windows with wood (or steel) isn't going to be cheap.
I don't know for sure but I don't think they are. Although there are a lot of listed buildings round here a lot of the old stuff isn't listed and is being knocked down and replaced with identikit houses and flats.

My mother's house was also a pre-war semi, and had its original doors until about 20years ago. They certainly made stuff to last in those days. I can't see the current upvc door lasting 65 years.

Weather-wise, it's lovely and sunny here today and much milder than it's been recently. Got a bit of leaf clearing to do in the garden, and will probably go out for a nice walk later too, as the recent slippy paths and pavements have curtailed my exercise a bit!:)

Geoff, that was my Mum's house, detached, and at least twice the size of my house, yes Nash were similar, but mine is Lang built.

Strange - you call UPVC an invention of the devil, but you're perfectly happy with all your "leather look" vinyl outfits! As an installer of UPVC windows doors and roofline, I should be taking the opposite view, but I won't. It's nice to see a home with well-preserved original features. Of course it is mostly a matter of taste, and older isn't necessarily better, as I'm sure you'll appreciate next time you're out in your Merc with the not-so-old car stereo blaring, or when you're watching your 4K giant telly.
Having said that, there are products available today which are much more sympathetic to original designs, but with the advantage of better insulation and draughtproofing, and incredibly secure, although there is a premium for these.
Alex's windows look to be steel and wood construction, which look very nice, but cold as buggery in winter.
upvc here all round ;) may not be stylish but its clean, tidy, warm and low maintenance. not my house tho...
Here's an example of what I'm talking about. The road these buildings are on was an old turnpike completed in 1819. Building is from about 1825. Original windows in upper floors. I'm pretty sure these are not listed.

Yes I thought the building looked a bit wonky, but is more likely a distortion of the image - subsidence to that degree would almost certainly break the glass in those windows. Although most houses built before about 1910 seem to have their windows set slightly further back and act as 'cavity closers', so I suppose it's possible the brickwork could slip around the windows to some degree.

Same here, they have just knocked down this old pub. Not sure how old but the red brick building to the right is 1869 and the pub is older. It closed in about 1998. Anywhere else this would be a listed building. Note it still has the original windows (the interior was all original too including the quarry tile floors). A great shame.

Yes, but I only accepted them out of politeness, when you were clearing out your wardrobe, even though they were stretched to buggery [with 'questionable stains' in key places, especially on that pink catsuit with the 'peek-a-boo' crotch]. Yeah, I completely agree. Older isn't always necessarily best, the same as vice versa. When it comes to properties though, especially old ones with some history, they should always be kept as original as possible. And I wouldn't thank you for ANY form of mass-produced 'new build' from Barratt, or whatever (rows upon rows of squashed together, soulless 'dolls houses'), as for me they're an abomination...:nono:
With houses, I either like proper old, at least 100 years (as long as the property still has some/most of its original features), or ultra-modern 'hi-tech'. I dislike the stuff in between.

All individual leaded panes (with solid sandstone surrounds), done by hand by the chap [a true 'old school' craftsman, as constructing proper leaded windows now is a dying art] whose business I've linked to in my signature. Costs a bloody fortune to replace, if any are damaged.
Could you imagine UPVC in a period property like that? Doesn't stop daft door-to-door window salesmen trying their luck, though!:D

Ha - you assume wrong, mon ami... It was very much a joint effort, as it always is with these things. I'm into interior design (partly because of working with interior designers), as part of my job, and Del's always loved it. We designed the bathroom from scratch, too...

What's the shovel for in the bottom picture? Did you have to do your jobbies on the floor until the bog was installed? Seriously I think it all looks great, and totally in keeping with the building. However...
Those windows, nice as they are, look to be a triumph of style over practicality, and for probably 95% of us would have more cons than pro's - there'll be next to no insulation properties (I'm assuming they are single glaze) and unless the workmanship is absolutely first class would be a bit draughty too. I've no doubt your man has done a first rate job, and work done to that standard doesn't come cheap! Which brings me to another con:
A whole house of windows in QUALITY upvc could be done for half the cost (or less), and that, combined with the energy savings, would make it a no-brainer for most of us.

Lol... 'Style over practicality' doesn't come into it, mate. It's what was there when the house was built, so with the property being listed, we're not *allowed* to have anything else! Good job we love the windows like that;)
No draughts at all, trust me. Harry's an expert. And it's a fairly small kitchen, which is centrally heated, plus when the oven's on, it's like an oven!:D Oh, and there's the heat from the wood burner in the adjacent lounge, which filters through...
Nothing's perfect, but honestly there are no draught issues, as the windows themselves are set right into the sandstone brick, so there are no gaps whatsoever to cause draughts. Yes, UPVC windows would be much warmer (at the cost of creating an eyesore), but as I've mentioned the house is nice and toasty:)
Which brings me to another con:

Ha - indeed. It's a wet room, so you can splash away until your heart's content! There are also two ceiling speakers, installed just above the bath, fed from my main system, and soft 'mood lighting', for relaxing to some choons, whilst having a nice long soak...
As you know, being a dirty bastard, a six monthly period between ablutions, requires a good soak to soften the outer crust, before tackling the 'main event':eyebrows:

No. The vat holds a concentrated alkaline solution to break down the soft matter. The hard bits that remain (bones/teeth) then go into a smaller acid bath for a while, eventually all that's left are any metal artifacts. Dental bits and hip joints etc. You get the picture.

Had some mad winds up here today.
Fitted a window this morning in a large office. I took out the old one, and when my brother opened to the door to bring in the new one, the through draught it created sent a shitload of post it notes from various desks. It was like a giant confetti storm. Now I've no idea who sits where, so I placed the notes in random places on the desks.
I imagine there'll be a fair bit of confusion come Monday morning, with folk doing stuff above or below their salary grade. Not my fault, they should have bought gummier post its :(
