A nice chap came into the shop the other day and gave me this

http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww282/hamish_gill/8abc1bf5.jpg

I'm guessing it's worth what I paid for it, but i like it... It actualy works too

http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww282/hamish_gill/8ac263b0.jpg

http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww282/hamish_gill/ed080ffd.jpg

there seems to be a problem with this switch though, it doesn't seem to actually select the speed it points to and for the most part doesn't work at all... For the most part I can only get it to work at 45rpm ...

http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww282/hamish_gill/5b5c8343.jpg

maybe it just needs a clean?

I can get the platter off either, any ideas how I might do that?

What switch the one infront of the arm?

Right.. the Beogram 1000 which is the turntable bit suffers, as do ALL of these idler/belt hybrid Beogram models, from old vaseline like grease which as gone almost solid.. A darned good strip-down and clean is one option and a CAREFUL spray with a solvent cleaner/lubricant is another, but make sure you don't get lube on the idler or belt.

Another problem is the motor bearings sieze for the same reason and not all motors can be got into. Reluctant dealers used up B&O's stocks of replacements in ten years or so and many otherwise servicable motors were scrapped as replacement was easier and more profitable.

The arm should take an SP14 cartridge if the SP6/7/9 styli cannot be got and good cartridges can be bought cheaper than new styli..

The little internal amp is basic in the extreme, but the caps were of adequate quality in those days so may not need replacing due to bulging or leaks.

The speakers sound very fair when hung on a wall and better than Kans as I remember (). Beopeople are quite happy to replace the grotty original crossover caps with modern ones and all report improvements to Beovox's of various ages being re-capped.

Don't ditch it. It's a lovely stereo record player and well worth cleaning up/restoring...

What switch the one infront of the arm?

Andre, it's the "microlift" cueing lever, which lifts the arm a couple of mm off the record (unlike the others of the era which lifted the stylus half an inch or more).

Hi Hamish,

(the peq3 is brill by the way)

I didn't realise you'd ordered one, or did you buy Dave's? Anyway, I told you it was a fab piece of kit! :)

Marco.

Hi Hamish,

I didn't realise you'd ordered one, or did you buy Dave's? Anyway, I told you it was a fab piece of kit! :)

Marco.

yeah bought dave's and Anthony very kindly lent me quicksilver audio sut... It's all a touch on the quiet side, but it's soundy stinking ... Hannah said yesterday "hey that's a record playing, it sounds as good as it does when you play music on that other thing" (she was talking about the majik) I did Have chuckle at that comment

DSJR

I didn't really need the PEQ3 and although I bought a laptop power supply with the intention of bodging it to work, Hamish's needs were greater than mine ;) Anyway, I now have a Quad 33 to fettle (and apparently they can be made good by today's standards with little effort - he says...).

Regard the Beogram 1500 as a stereo record player and then hopefully be delighted with it if it exceeds this. Service manuals can be got on fleabay and the Beoworld forum is a great source of help with vintage B&O, which can be better than you'd think if you choose right.

Forgive earlier spelling catastrophies, I get like this when knackered...

Don't be so unkind Andre......... ;)

I love this old stuff and B&O actually made gear worthy of the HiFi tag back then (as they do once again now...)

I SOLD the bloody things Andre and all that used to go wrong was the grease siezing up and mostly this was easily fixed, although we never stripped the motors out as I remember.

I currently have a beogram 3000 collecting dust while it awaits a trim piece that may happen one day. It works perfectly now the idler and all linkages have been cleaned, the power micro-switch has been re-aligned and the stylus replaced... The cosmetics just need a darned good clean now..

Is that the circular aluminium trim that belongs to the smoked perspex switch/selector?

DSJR
02-05-2010, 14:17
Tell me more..... :)

And yes, it is the circular trim I need, as it was stuck on and sometimes comes off over the years as the glue goes off.. I found the counterweight marks do come off to a degree - the 1202/03 don't suffer this as the lid is removed when playing..

Hi Dave
I must stop winding people up in future :eyebrows: Yeh of course i love the older B&O stuff.. I have two '1500's a '1000' & a '1202'.. I was clearing some stuff out the other week & opened a box by mistake looking for mi 'Beolab 5000' amp to stumble upon a '1500'..I thought about this old thread strait away{Good Memory see}..

Here this particular one does not have a cartridge, but i know the others do.. I must stop this Magpie behaviour immediately
