Feccomend so,dering iron

Hi

I need a so,dering iron to unsolder/resolder woofers and binding posts in some speakers.

It’s only for these speakers and not something i’ll use going forward.
Eyesight not getting any better.

Can someone point me to a suitable soldering iron on amazon please?

And what solder do i need?
And solder?
I want to change the binding posts on my jbl L26 because they are the work of the devil.

I have never soldered before.

Have you looked inside ? All the JBLs I have taken a look at had push on connectors and bolted on spades on the terminals.

Get someone to do it for you. If you have not used a de-soldering pump or a temperature controlled soldering iron, you may well make a mess of it.

Plenty of people on this forum that may be able to assist.

O just opened them...little spade connectors to the drivers and to the bindigg posts.

Trying now to determine if the crossovers are original and how fixed to inside of cabinets.

HUm....well i assume they are untouched original crossovers.

A big red capacitor with mexico written on it.
Did they really source bits from mexico?

The crossover is on a thick piece of wood that is stapled to the inside of the cabinets.

Yep, soldering is not too difficult, but it does have a knack that you can only get through practice. I prefer using leaded eutectic solder 63/37 as I find it flows better and is easier to work with. Avoid lead-free solder as this has a more “pasty” consistency and is more difficult to work with, and also has a higher melting point.

A Weller SP25 will be good enough for your needs, if you need to solder, that is.

Can you take a photo of your crossover? Leave well alone IMO... unless there are old degraded electrolytic caps.

Please, please practice first if you have to do it! Trying to solder some cables to connectors will give you the skills you need. Joints should be shiny with no dull spots or surface irregularities.

I would leave as-is. ;)

There is no visible bulging or cracking of the glue, so that cap is good.

A nice minimal crossover just as I like them. :)

I suspect the crossover was mounted that for sonic reasons.

I feel better about ignoring it now.

The binding posts are easy to get at at least.

I’ve decided to try the refoam job myself (with whichever poor bugger is in my vacinity at the time.

The surround goes nderb5ne cone, so that should help keep it neat as far as glue showing.
A cardboard gasket goes over where the surround glues tonthe driver frame, so that helps keep it neet as well.

I’ve pretty much defoamed, etc tne woofers.
The hardest part eas removing the cardboard gasgets.
On the youtube videos they come off with a feather duster.
I guess simply speakers whose video it was want to sell foams.
The gasgets were a bugger to ger off, but they’re recessed and so a clean up and spray paint will be perfect.

I’m almost enjoying this.
But then i haven’t touched any glue yet!

The ones in the JBLs aren't soldered..there's a ring connector on the end of the wire, which is held on the binding post thread with a nut and washer.
(the binding post threaded stem is likely to be too thick for the wire/ring).

So can't i just use a little nut/bolt to attach the wire/ring to the binding post tab connector in the ebay listing above?
