My name is Sandy. I live in Lanarkshire and I enjoy a range of music.
Sadly I no longer have a Hi Fi system.
I came to this forum as when I did a Google search for B&W DM1, this was the first site which came up.

I have a pair of fully working DM1s in excellent condition which I would like to sell.

I'm not sure if this is allowed on the site and I apologise if this would contravene forum rules.

If it is allowable and anyone is interested, I can post pictures etc and would be please to discuss.

Many thanks

Hi Sandy, welcome to the forum.

You can sell your speakers here but you will need to make 5 posts before you can send and receive private messages to facilitate that.

What you should really do is keep them and get an amp and turntable or cd player to go with them :) Good speakers, although not worth an awful lot these days.

Hi Sandy. Welcome to AOS.

There's no problem with offering your speakers here. As Martin says, the PM (personal message) facility only kicks in after the fifth post and you would need this to communicate with others.

At a guess, I'd estimate the DM1's at maybe £100 to £120 in value.

Enjoy the forum,
Geoff.

Thanks for the welcome Martin.
Unfortunately I'm not in the position you go back into the Hi Fi game at the moment. My main reason for posting was that I know these are good speakers and from what I can see on the net, much sought after. I was hoping that someone on the forum would really appreciate the quality and value of these speakers. I would rather sell to someone who obviously appreciates what they are than sell to someone as 'just another pair of speakers' As to value I'm open to suggestions but I've seen some of fleabay for £130+ with no guarantee that they work! On the Continent they are advertised for silly money ie €300 -400! I'm basically looking for a good home for them for a reasonable price.

Thanks walpurgis - I have posted a reply to Martin as to my reasons for joining the forum. The price range you mentioned is probably near to what I would expect. They are in good condition and fully working. As to vintage the serial number is the lowest I've seen anywhere on the net - whether that makes any difference I wouldn't know.

Assuming the prices on ebay are asking rather than achieved prices they are hopeful. Geoff is in the right area given they look to be in excellent condition and assuming the drivers all work. Sometimes the HF2000s can stop working and some people don't even notice! Happened to me with my first pair of DM2s when I had less experience. I'd take a punt if I was in the market for vintage standmounts.

As I recall, the supertweeter is not an HF2000, but a Coles unit, one of the 4001 variants. It could even be STC or ITT branded as some were. The main tweeter is obviously a Celestion, probably an HF1300, but there were others that looked similar. The elliptical bass driver is a 10" x 6" EMI with laminated composite cone and added damping pads.

I believe the DM1 was the first speaker ever marketed as a 'Domestic Monitor' and it was regarded by many as the finest compact speaker around at the time. Values are not yet high, but will certainly rise. They are definitely a collector's item.

Sandy only has to reply to this thread twice further to be able to use the PM facility. The speakers can then be offered for sale in the Private Exhibitions section. Photos and a price will be required though.

This 4001G supertweeters in the pictures are not of the earliest types fitted originally to DM1s. The tweeter is the Celestion HF1300, identical to that used in the Spendor BC1, B&W DM2, DM4 etc. a high quality unit. If the 10x6 speaker surrounds have not badly shrunk and distorted over the decades, I think the DM1s value might be more than suggested. The Japanese are quite keen on them. In the 70's Sony marketed the DM1 under there own name.

Early DM1 shown here, note the supertweeter

Many thanks to everyone for your replies and information.
I have tested the speakers using a CD player and they sound great. I will however re test to ensure that all the speakers are in fact working.
As for the 10 x 6 speaker surrounds they look fine to me but I know nothing about electronics etc. The photos I posted may give some indication as to their condition - could I ask that someone have a look and possibly advise.
I will post close ups of all speakers when I run the tests again.
Another possibly silly question - which one is the tweeter and which one is the super tweeter?
Many thanks again
Sandy

The crossovers inside the speakers are of high quality, they well most likely be fine. I have had three sets of DM1s, all have been OK in that respect.

The shiny unit at the top right is the supertweeter, not much sound comes out of these.

spendorman - thanks for the info.
I'm going to test the speakers today.

Hi Everybody,

I connected my DM1s to my CD player today and the only thing I can positively say is that my ears are not what they were!
I used are range of CDs from rock to welsh male voice choir!
I can't really hear anything coming from the super tweeter but not sure if that's my hearing or not. I'm sure the tweeters are OK and the 10 x 6's are fine.
Is there any simple way of testing the speakers definitively without resorting to fancy electronics?
Many thanks

Hi spendorman

I have now tested my speakers again and think I can detect a difference from the tweeters. After a search on Google I tested both tweeters in both speakers using a 1.5v battery. I got sound response from all speakers.
Does this mean that the voice coils are OK and hence the speakers are OK? Are there any other tests that can be done on the speakers?
If the speakers are OK I presume that any fault would be in the crossovers.
How should I test these?
Lots of questions - especially from someone new to the forum.
I greatly appreciate all the advise and information which has been great.
Hoping that I can end up with a pair of speakers which I am confident are 100%.

Many thanks

Sandy

Hi Sandy

It would appear from the tests that you have done that all the units are working, although this does not prove conclusively that all the voice coils and their alignment are perfect.

However, they are likely to be in usable condition as they sound OK.

If you don't manage to sell the DM1's, the tweeters and supertweeters fetch reasonable money by themselves, as they are used in several other quality speakers.

Thanks spendorman,

I would prefer to sell them as complete units if possible.

Can I now advertise them on this forum?

Many thanks again

Probably the highest price would be obtained on ebay, but the highest risk too, e.g. buyer claiming refund saying item faulty etc. I guess that you have enough posts here to allow listing on this forum.

Here are the rules for selling on this forum:

spendorman.
Thanks again.
Before putting them up for sale:

Final question: You mentioned that the voice coils alignment may not be perfect. I am assuming that this can be corrected.
Is this something for an expert or is it DIY.?
cheers

In fact, quite a lot of voice coils are not centrally in the magnetic field, not something that is easily adjusted on most speakers.

I would not worry, as long as speakers play OK.
