View Full Version : Getting back into cycling

So chatting over the Xmas holidays me & my 2 brothers have decided to do a few days away riding the South downs way. We are starting from Winchester and aiming to finish in Eastbourne (100 mostly off-road miles) 2.5 days later. It's supposed to be fairly hilly route so we have split it into 3 days (40 miles max a day) with a b&b stop each evening.
As of a few weeks ago I'd not ridden a bike in ages, 3 years ago I'd herniated a disc in my lower back and cycling hadn't been on my radar much.
But things are a lot better now, and I firmly believe in setting yourself challenges so this is my next one [emoji16][emoji16][emoji16].
Ive been out and bought myself a decent mountain bike last week, it's certainly slower than my old road bike but it's v comfy and I think with sensible training the 100 mile will be a walk in the park sort of!
So this morning was first ride on it, very flat 16k route local to home. Nice an easy, all felt good. Can't wait for the next outing now [emoji16]

Nice one Ben,
Used to be a serious cyclist way back.
During my formative years, next to music, hifi and F1, cycling was my passion, I rode my bike everywhere until I came to London just before my 17th birthday.
I stopped when I came to London, being far more interested in partying, girls and getting a car :D
I started up again in my mid 20's as I'd bought my first place and got into debt which meant my lovely Astra GTE 16v had to go.
My folks then treated me to a bike to save me the hassle and frustration of long waits for the bus to theirs on a Sunday for dinner etc.
Only a few miles but i loved it as it meant I didnt have to endure the mad busy London roads the way proper cyclists do here and was at my Mums in 10-15 mins :)
My brother treated himself to something similar to yours about a year back, all black and stealth like.

Cheers dude,
Felt very good to get back in the saddle. About 5 or 6 years ago I was riding a fair bit in sportives and triathlons but that was on road. Im feeling really enthusiastic about getting out and seeing some countryside by mountain bike.
Also spending 3 days riding with my brothers will be a real laugh, something I doubt the 3 of us have done since we were kids. There will no doubt be a bit of a competitive element amounst the laughs!

Good one Ben! Avid cyclist here as well :). Mostly MTB; rarely road, although I do own a decent road bike. But I LOVE riding singletrack through the forests here. One of my happy places :). I ride at least 2x per week spring summer and fall, and even a few times in the winter when there's only an inch or two of snow. In fact, my mtn. bike looks a lot like yours - Trek Superfly hardtail. Love that bike! So much fun.
Are you going to be riding yours off road on mountain bike trails? Or mostly on the road and gravel paths? I'm guessing at 40 miles per day you're talking road here :). I don't think I'd survive 40 miles of pounding on singletrack.

Sounds wonderful Ben. If it's a popular cycling route then it's probably not mtb singletrack of the gnarly kind. That kind of stuff (rocks, roots, logs, steep climbs...) I can manage about 15 miles max. before I'm whacked.
BTW, if you're riding mostly smooth gravel and asphalt, you might think about swapping out those knobby tires for some with lower rolling resistance. Will save you a ton of energy, esp. over the distances you're talking about. Check out Chain Reaction or Wiggle for great deals, or your local bike shop. Let me know if you need some advice, and I can recommend a few models.
Enjoy the bike!

Thanks Svend,
cheers for the advice mate. I'm planning on using the new bike for mainly off road stuff, footpaths, canal paths, forrest tracks etc as I need to get used to the terrain and for this upcoming trip. I know what your saying about the tyres, my wife was on her road bike yesterday and it was a real effort to keep up with her!
I cycle a lot weekly mainly on roads and roughish tracks that can be really rough (sand/soil/rocks - combined) tree roots/grass/mud/more mud etc etc. I use a hybrid with tyres that I suspect hard-core off roaders would piss themselves at. However, they are great both on and off road and I have not had a puncture yet and have used the same tyres for a couple of years.
I rebuilt an MTB that my son broke. It has massive knobbly tyres and is a PITA to get any decent ride out of on the road and not that great off road.
Ben, if you don't think you'll ever get into the rough stuff on your bike, then you might think about swapping the squishy fork for a rigid one. You would shave a couple of pounds off the weight.
OTOH, you might really like the forest paths and want to try some real MTB trails at some point. Tons of fun to be had there :). You will need to keep the boingy front end for that.

Interesting this. I have a mountain bike which has been in its packing in the shed for years - never quite got round to putting it together, and trying it. Maybe it's time to do so now, before I can't cycle any more, and age really does kick in. I know others my aged (retired +) who still do a lot of riding, and I do need to make the effort to get fitter

Pretty much intend on keeping it stock for now Svend. I've got a lock out on the fork so that helps a bit on the flat stuff.
The plan is to get out to this place within the next few weeks !

Hopefully getting used to some climbing. Apparently the route in may is pretty hilly.

You will love it Ben! I can't think of a better way to spend a day than on a mountain bike in the forest. Careful, this could get addictive :D Pretty soon you'll be hopping logs and bombing the rock gardens
Any questions, ask away -- I've been mountain biking since 1989, so should be able to help with most things.
Enjoy!

Had a very blustery ride out this morning with one of my wife's work colleagues. He's into his mountain biking and had offered to take me out.
It wasn't a particulally adventurous route, mainly taking in canal paths, a few trails and some road work.
Even with the high winds though it was still nice to be out riding. Our route was almost 27k which felt good to me, I'd have easily pushed on a bit further but my partner's bike had a mechanical issued that ended his ride a bit sooner than he was expecting.
Hopefully next week end il push a bit more north of 30 k. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190127/39be6ab77d68230bfc0d6c440dec6f88.jpg

So far I've been really pleasantly surprised at how comfy it is to ride. I've put a slightly more padded seat on it and I wear padded shorts too to help.
The actual MTB riding position is nice an upright and I'm really happy with that.
The 26k route was fairly flat but had a few little hills in it toward the end, strong head wind added a bit to these too.
But by the time we were back to base I still felt I had another 5 to 10 k in me. That's for next weekend now I guess, bring on 32k!

Sounds like the bike is a good fit for you Ben. If you were comfortable over that distance and had gas in the tank for more, then that's a good sign.
Keep pedalling! :)

I've been reading up more on the south downs way route we are riding for our 3 day challenge and the more I read about it the worse it sounds tbh! Over the 100 mile route it takes in over 13000 ft of uppy & downy bits.
With that in mind I've decided that next sat morning I'm heading out towards Chester and an area called delamere that I know reasonably well from the few years ago spent living there. Ive already got in mind a route that will take in a couple of decent climbs (on road) before heading into the Forrest MTB route and then back on the road towards home hopefully with 20 miles covered.

Your saddle position can help immensely in making climbing easier. If you find it a slog at any grade, then try raising the saddle a bit at a time -- say 1cm each time -- and then pedal another good distance. The point that you feel your hips start to rock back and forth with each pedal stroke, then you've gone too far -- back it down a bit just until hips are stable and you're there. Your riding buddy will have fun telling you when your hips are wiggling :D
The other thing is to make sure your saddle isn't too far back. Try sliding it forward in small increments until you feel efficient pedalling, but not too far that your knees start to hurt. It'll take you a few outings to dial it in, but it's worth it.
What pedals do you have? Are you clipped in? Or on flats? Clipped in is much more efficient, but maybe a bit scary for singletrack if you're not used to them. I ride flats - big platform lugged pedals - in winter because the clips and cleats ice up; but otherwise ride clipped-in the rest of the year (Shimano SPD).
Lugged platforms can be great if you get a good pair - they grip like crazy. These are very good, and not expensive:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Raceface-PD16CHETUQ-Chester-Pedal-Turquoise/dp/B06XKV7VH5/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1548710293&sr=8-1&keywords=raceface+chester
Wear stiff-soled shoes whichever pedals you choose. Makes pedalling more efficient.
Hope this helps...
Also -- keep and eye on your tire pressure. For gravel rail trails I have my MTB tires at about 35 to 40 psi, which seems to be a nice efficient roll and not too harsh. For singletrack (hitting roots, rocks, and logs), I'm down to 28 psi, which is slower rolling but I'm not boinging off everything I hit.
Stop me if I you know all this already! :D I don't want to be a preachy know-it-all...just trying to help... :)

Cheers Svend mate,
Don't worry your not coming across preachy at all lol.
Some of the stuff you mention I know but there's plenty to learn so thanks again.
So pedal wise I'm using Shimano SPD's. I started off using SPD's on my first road bike before swooping to SPD sl's when I bought a snazzier pair of road shoes.
So I'm pretty happy with the pedals but will definitely experiment with seat height & position as there's prob some room for improvement there.

Tire pressures as well I need to experiment with. Currently I'm.running v high prob around 70lbs. I could feel that was too hard on anything but roads so I'll drop them down a bit on my next outing.

Wembley stadium, Kensal bone yard ( well ?), Sudbury golf course and part of the canal that actually goes over the A406 a huge ring road around London. Probably few drivers even no there s cyclist and water
above there heads ?. Anyway good luck with the ride this summer.... Took the train back to Paddington stn b.t.w

The plan for Sunday morning is a slightly hillier road route towards Chester then hit the Forrest trails for about 5 miles then back homewards on the roads again.
Hopefully that will see me around the 20 mile mark which Il be very happy with.

So my plans changed a lot this morning, basically I just wanted to stay in doors eating biscuits, drinking tea, listening to music rather than braving the cold on the bike.
But then I had a bit of a word with myself and figured that any riding was better than no riding. So I sort of headed towards town with the vague idea of getting to sefton park doing a loop round the outside if it then heading back.
But once I was out I started to enjoy it and after checking my nav at the park I pushed on towards town as I'd only managed 14k.
From the centre of town I passed the cathedral and headed towards Albert Dock where I picked up the promenade which took me back towards home.
I'm definitely enjoying being back on a bike but boy is it hard work on a MTB rather than a road bike. Still it's not to be good for the legs & lungs I guess.
So ended doing 36k which was a bit of a trudge in places but pretty pleased with it all in. I earned this afternoons roast thats for sure. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190203/f9046a184308f29f4deefa7e0240f0bf.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190203/e757e7b6c8297e31bd123a1612addd24.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190203/b43fb67c716f620080b5f28edc96a7d0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190203/7753819c5e43c25c10d77ae1ef50ed0e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190203/cbc6be84045e786160527560abe79f20.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190203/929f07bf11cbe726c3881a0c93411b6d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190203/4effc2922917c048f7109c829d71dcdb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190203/1b6b0871000c667a9d4852d50a8e9367.jpg

Nice one Ben, and good on ya for getting out on a cold day! Scenic area you live in, and looks like no shortage of trails to explore.
And yes, riding a mountain bike on the road is a slog. Slow-rolling tires, heavy fork...Gasp! Are your tires set up tubeless? That helps a lot to reduce rolling resistance and rotating mass (about 250g/wheel). I did that on my bike, and it is brilliant.

Morning mate,
Yeah Liverpool has its scenic spots, its a nice place to live in that respect. There's not so much in the way of off road trails near me but plenty of paved cycle tracks to ride.
I'm running inner tubes at the moment but will look into going tubeless, anything to help with the on-road slog!!
Tubeless is well worth the effort. It can be fussy to set up, but Bontrager makes it as easy as it can get with their rim-tire combos. E.g.: I run Bontrager XR4 (Fr.) and XR3 (Rr.) on my 29er, and have no need for sealant, the fit between tire bead and rim is that tight. Granted, the tires will slowly deflate over the course of a week, but that is no matter as I always air them up before every ride no matter what. I've had them set up that way for 3 seasons and have never had a puncture...and believe me they take a pounding (I weigh 225 lbs, and ride some gnarly terrain, so the tires really get flogged).
At the initial install it can be difficult to get the bead to seat in the rim hook (this is true of any tubeless setup, not just Bontrager), and sometimes I have to use my compressor to blast them into place. If you don't have a compressor you might want to get your shop to do this for you.
A few ounces of sealant in there would be good if you ride on the road a lot, to seal up any holes from nails, glass, etc..
Speaking of road and gravel riding, Bonty has a micro-knobby tubeless tire that might work well for you:
https://www.trekbikes.com/gb/en_GB/equipment/cycling-components/bike-tyres/mountain-bike-tyres/bontrager-xr1-team-issue-tlr-mtb-tyre/p/13218/?colorCode=black
Those closely-spaced centre knobs should be pretty fast rolling. Lighter too, than the XR2 tires that are on your bike now -- about 150g less. Minus the weight of the tubes (~250g) and you're looking at saving 400g per wheel! That's almost 2 lbs off the bike and 1 lb/wheel of rotating mass. Pretty significant... :) You'll be flying along :)
Cheers,
Svend

Another Sunday another ride. This morning I got the train into town changing at Liverpool central and then continuing on under the Mersey and across to the Wirral.
The Wirral way is a 15 miles or so foot & cycle path that I picked up at Hooten and followed towards the ferry terminal at New Brighton. The first half was all offroad mainly hardpack and then when I hit the coastal section that was all paved.
The entire route was about 44k ish including riding to & from the station. About half way through the ride I felt like I could run a bit more seat height so whacked it up another 1.5inches or so. Result was an immediate improvement in knee comfort and I hit the sweet spot in terms of hips rocking nicely and being a bit more over the front of the bike.
I could of cycled from town back home but had a bit of a time constraint so jumped the train again homewards.

We all use that excuse mate( train ) ;). Winds be bad in London so chickened out of me cycle ride for the last few days. Weather picking up next week though so looking forward to
a few good hours in the saddle, taking in the famous ( infamous ) super cycle highway route alongside the thames as I pass stationery traffic blocking up half of London
Should nt laugh but what can you do ?. Must check your route out on google maps. b w
Yep my borther done a 40 mile Evans sportive around kent yesterday and said they weather was horrendous!!
I see you have been over to my neck of the woods on the Wirral. You've done well to get out over the last few weeks with the ice and the wind. I ride most mornings from the Welsh side of the Wirral over to Liverpool on the commute- I've got sore legs tonight.

Hi Chris,
Yeah its been a bit cold recently but ive been enjoying myself, don't notice the cold much apart from my feet.
Can you suggest any other decent cycling routes on the wirrall mate?
This weekend I'm thinking about getting the train to Chester and then riding to delamere, doing a lap round the forrest and then heading back towards Runcorn to get the train back over the Mersey (I'm not sure if you can ride the new bridge or if the old ones still open to foot traffic?)
Anyway that's the plan at the moment...………..

Was up early again on Sunday, didn't really fancy it but I pushed myself on. Train to Chester and then rode home from there, took in some Forrest trails at delamere before picking the train up again over the Mersey and back home.
Parts of it were pretty enjoyable but mtbing on the road is just tedious & slow compared to a road bike. The route was definitely hillier too.
Think I'm out walking next weekend & I'm already looking forward to a weekend off the bike!! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190218/9d45aabe85f17aa841306e1e2307378d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190218/76b69466ec8023e2d1611f3b0c53b249.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190218/3a5f6ebdf0734fccdf9e664fd1ac9eec.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190218/e7bce3b981acd383db85a4890ab5f2f6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190218/b9770cbf46df62f57e78bd8414642e03.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190218/7d304312664ece9ff50a5f9bed15430b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190218/cf47205ef25bd3914e2ee14fdad4c8b1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190218/0d6c5de91afe99cbf2c362d8c3ae09e7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190218/04d9d27ea797aa944b9708cda90059e2.jpg

Hello Zoidburg,
Just read your bike thread, some days you don't fancy it but still push on, it's making feel a little bit ashamed.
I bought a Giant Defy road bike 3 years back and was full of good intentions and actually did start to build up some fitness. I was riding out Widnes and then back to Liverpool in a 22 mile loop and doing it 3 times a week. Alas, work commitments took over, I was doing less and less and have now degenerated into something of biscuit eating slob.
When I see other lads putting the effort in and getting something from it, it gives a tingle of shame and optimism I should be out there. Like yourself I've had a few back problems lately and the riding position of my road bike meant I would be stretching my back more than I would on an upright hybrid/mountain bike, but still a lame excuse.
Getting back to your last ride, that's a decent time you've set there, your average speed is a 11mph approx over 48km on a heavy bike with big tyres that generate a lot of friction with the road, also your front forks aren't doing you any favours while on the road, they're dissapating some of your forward momentum into the road.
I find it's a nice feeling of accomplishment when you get some miles and scenery behind you, then get home to a meal youv'e earned.
I'm going to replace the cables on mine, they're sticking, wash it (something I haven't done for 18 months!) and start again on Monday 4th March. I'm too frightened to step onto the scales, I'll do that after a few rides.
Well done! Good motivational stuff for the rest of us.

Glad it's spurring you on mate, I must admit I feel a lot better for having a month of rides under my belt now, bit more bike fit.
I think for me it helps a bit if u have a target, so a train to somewhere and then riding back home is better for me, I just focus on the route home.
I also have a road bike I've not used in about 3 years that I'm now thinking of getting back on so if you fancy a ride out somewhere give me a shout.

Yep, a ride together would be good, look forward.
At the moment though my fitness levels are through the floor, I'll get the bike ready and go out on a few 8 - 10 mile rides to just get my legs moving again, I am using the bike but it's only on short journeys and I'm dawdling.
Your 11mph on a mountain bike will be 15 - 17mph on a road bike, I'm doing 11-12mph now on my road bike.
I've noticed that about 10 or so rides and fitness starts to kick in, the rides don't seem to hurt as much and quicker recovery comes.
There's a zone in cycling when you have some fitness, where you set a tempo and you find the point where you're putting yourself through it, but not enough to make you want to stop and enough to make you stop thinking about all those day to day things you want to leave behind and when there you just concentrate on the road. When you're in that zone, you start to enjoy the pain and cover endless miles.
Give me about a month or so to get myself in gear and we'll go for a ride.

MMMmmmm. I was surprised to see so many people (11-13?) in the long yellow boat in the dock in msg 31. Can't say that I would have fancied that, but there's no accounting for taste. Looks like a good ride otherwise. Where was the statue in the roundabout thingy? Sefton Park, Princes Park, elsewhere?

Had a cheeky weekend off this week so thinking of planning something good for this weekend coming, just hope this lovely weather hangs about for a while yet.
Ben, I'm envious! We've had crap weather here and I really miss being on my bike :(. This past weekend we had yet another bad storm blow through -- first rain, then freezing rain, then ice pellets, then snow, then 100 to 110 km/hr winds. If you heard about the ice tsunami that happened on Lake Erie, that's not far from here. Now it's back to -16C and we're getting another 15cm snow later today. Everything is covered in a sheet of ice, so I can't even go hiking or trail running. Arrrgh! I would post this in the Crap Weather for February thread, but I think the guys there are getting tired of me one-upping them on their moaning about "bitterly cold temps of +3C"....Ha!
Enjoy the ride! :D

Rolling tracks and fields !!!
Sounds like a nice days ride to me.
Been there and done it and live in Andover not too far from the start.
PM me when planning and I’ll give you some tips.
Ive ridden all the long distance tracks in this area but a serious motorbike accident and more recent heart problems have curtailed my activities to a significant degree. Still manage to get out but only short rides now.
South Downs is a great ride or run but plan carefully to make things easier for yourself. On a good day it’s beauty takes away the pain but cold wind and rain can make it awful - wet chalk track is about the worst surface you can encounter especially on exposed high ground.
Consider your start and finish planning carefully and think about a backup plan in case of mid route “issues”

Hi Mel,
thanks for the message mate, definitely some good points to think about. I really have everything crossed already for decent weather on our trip as ive heard it can be a bit of a nightmare in the wet.
I think we have most of it covered but I must admit to not having a "back up plan" sorted as yet. We will be taking spare inner tubes and tools and a 1st aid kit just in case of course and a good part of the route isn't a million miles away from various family members so at least we have that to fall back on.
At present we have a B&B booked in Winchester the night before so we are aiming to get a relatively early start on the first day (7am ish) and since the last day should only be a 20 miler I will be looking at train times from Eastbourne to suit.
God that weather sounds terrible mate, I hope I clears up for you soon and you can get out & moving again.
Yeah, it's been a crap winter here. We honestly don't mind the snow and cold, but it's when the freeze-thaw happens, or there is freezing rain, that all the snow on the ground turns to ice and one can't do anything outdoors. We've had a lot of that this winter.
But the weather is perfect today, so finally a break from being shut in. 20cm snow yesterday covered all the ice, so a hike in the woods with a camera is in order after work today. Sunny and -3C. Bliss! Should be able to go skiing this weekend too, and conditions look to be ideal.
Hope you make it out again on your bike. I enjoy looking at your pictures.
All the best,
Svend

So at last the weather has sorted itself out and I was able to get out again yesterday morning.
I'd been thinking about North Wales for a while as its only 40 mins from home and "on paper" it seemed like it would offer perfect mtb training for me.
I'd already bought an os map and done some online research for routes but was feeling a bit intimidated with the thought of getting lost in the middle of no where so decided to head to moel famua as we'd been walking there month or 2 back.
Moel Famau*(or Moel Fama)*is the highest hill within the*Clwydian Range, formerly Flintshire Range, on the boundary between*Denbighshire*and*Flintshire*in Wales. The hill, which also gives its name to the Moel Famau*country park, has been classed as an*Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty*since 1985. It is also surrounded by several well-preserved*Iron Age hill forts.
Parking in the lower car park I set off on a random trail I wasn't really expecting to get to the top but almost an hour later I found myself at the summit after the last 200m of pushing swearing and generally looking like a mess!!
I then followed another track down the backside of the hill which took me on a long sweeping route back towards the car park through some great gravel fire tracks.
I rode for 3 hours almost mainly on the fire tracks which proved to be perfect training ground, lots of long gradual hills followed by more steep hills and the more steeper hills lol. But I was pleased to feel that my legs are strong and my fitness seems to be improving with less recovery needed between the hills. I guess the crossfit classes are helping there.
My phone app messed up and lost connection repeatedly so my overall mileage seems low but I put a good shift in. Il be back there next weekend for more of the same I think.

Just came across this and had a quick read through. South Downs way has 10,000 feet of climbs, we used to ride it in a day back a few years, organised event that's on every year. Some long climbs and descents can be dicey if it's wet, chalk is as slippery as a slippery thing. Not preaching but seat height is best done sitting on the saddle, heel of your foot on the pedal with leg straight is perfect. When you then put the ball if your foot on the pedal your knee will be slightly bent. Tyre pressures off road under 30psi or you will suffer less grip on the front and uphill on the back. I now use 2.8 plus tyres and run about 17psi. Tubeless is the way to go. Less rolling weight and unless you gash the tyre you won't know when you get a puncture.

Got a few days off this week so dragged my road bike out the garage where its sat unused for almost 3 years.
I've treated it to a new set of tyres, the widest touring rubber that would fit on it (28s) instead of the pure race 21 ultimos it had on, mainly to give it a bit of a softer ride hopefully.
It's had a full clean and de grease of all the drive chain and ive lubed it up and made sure it all works as it should.
I've just been round the block on it and it feels a bit odd, tiny and light but sooo quick. I'm off to the gym on it later which is about a 15 mile round trip. Nothing really but will be a bit more of a shake down.

As is the way with these things I've also given the Mrs bike a once over as she wants to put some miles on it with me. I changed the tyres to a set of cyclocross hoops so she can do canal toe paths and the odd dirt track too.
Tomorrow I'm out over to North Wales again on my mountain bike with the hope of finding a good route of 30 miles or there about, got to get plenty of hills in again. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190409/02b92f20b2f3289d637ed8824f284146.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190409/ab2adcd7ef496f2f8fb8302ef8a7e169.jpg

Wouldn't mind another bike. Not ridden since I was pushing sixty, but my legs and lungs still function and I could certainly use the exercise.
Something with a nice vintage Claude Butler or Freddie Grubb frame would appeal. Flat bars though, hate drops.

Pleased with today's little outing, only 25k total but was split up by an hour of crossfit at the gym.
I'd forgotten just how fast feeling a road bike is, even with the slightly wider tyres it's still v v nimble and has a great turn of pace. On the downside it's deffo harder going on my lower back and I was starting to feel a bit of a niggle with it towards the end.
Things to note, I think I need some new brake pads on it as they felt weak, and the gears could do with some fine adjustment too.
Still 25k bike, 4k run, 60 box step ups and 50 9kg wall balls isn't too bad going.
Il enjoy tonight's bbq slightly more for it I know that! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190409/3e039971ee1219fb7e755b78bf5bd834.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190409/287d96235983cbb84b9399b17b3935f7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190409/f9edeba2924c294e7a4776aaffd40ef3.jpg

Out again early this morning over to moel famau in North Wales.
Expanded my horizons a bit and found a fairly challenging 20 mile loop.
Plenty of hills that's for sure, I had to push in a few spots here and there.
According to my strava I improved in a couple of sectors from a few weeks ago, so I'm really pleased with that.
Only 5 more weeks till outmr big challenge so got to step it up more for the next few weeks before tapering it off. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190414/06edfd6548b16e4baf6d4cc3384bd924.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190414/8db4878837644c873ef67b15755136d0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190414/d72480846d3d49a16d029f7b3652bdf8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190414/74588bc34e50fec5f5ed3acf2ff0e74f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190414/bb036b12acb1090d6aa128611ee565a1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190414/1b3f5225d0f7a483c37d49460311bf76.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190414/cf285ef6ec6630d36ee93cef9e5220c1.jpg

Cheers mate, you know what I've really been enjoying myself in the process, way more so than I expected when I bought the bike back at the start of the year.
Actually getting out into the countryside is really enjoyable, it's a challenge too. There's something quite special standing at the top of a big hill surveying the route up thinking "I've done that, what's next".
I've somehow managed to string together a couple of months worth of regular cycling and crossfit sessions twice a week and and feel like I'm in a relatively decent shape to take on the south downs way in a months time.
Current thinking is "BRING IT ON" [emoji16][emoji16]

I was out on the trail by just after 9am and it was warm even then, I could of gone further but played it safe, didn't want to overdo it in the sun as I forgot any factor 20.

Been putting a few more miles in this week, Thursday night I met up with the local mtb club for one of their evening rides. I enjoyed it but the pace was pretty quick and the tight twisty single track through closely packed woods wasn't really my thing.
Caught the train over to Delamere forrst again today and spent a few hours looping round the tracks there. Pleased with my fitness, my legs feel strong but I do slightly fear 3 full days of riding still [emoji16]
Highlight of today was sighting a buzzard swooping around the trail I was riding before perching in a tree. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190504/4d562585a3e34f5458ba0a10b79f0f10.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190504/5b681b610714536de49aa2e31afde12e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190504/98e98cd662ec9ca17e327f642977b9c2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190504/9ff2b877c0a14eaeef1a1cc61ee2dd0d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190504/afb3344bb2e3a4b95bc684db0f0e6caa.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190504/598d469ea0a10a32f3eee703e89c157b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190504/7f86cffeb27305af4a0a0f22bab77687.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190504/eab2b83f227a5996ba14e6e82db99130.jpg

IvoCheers mate, Im lucky in that I have north Wales on my door step which certainly has it fair share of mtb routes on offer. Delamere is closer and also has plenty to explore too but is not quite so wayward.

Well it's almost here, I'm now only 10 days away from the big trip. I'm slightly crapping it still but there's no escaping it lol.
Today is probably my last long ride before the trip, il get out again in the week for a few miles here and there just to keep my legs moving but won't be more than another 20 k max overall I guess.
This mornings route was very pleasant, I just rode following my recently downloaded OS map app. This was really helpful for finding new paths, tracks and the like, and I was surprised how much off road I managed to find, I road tracks, across farm fields (foot paths) bridle ways, canal toe paths, though a couple of lovely parks and finished off along the edge of the mersey.
40 miles overall today, pretty flat really but nice to get the miles in if not the hills.

Had a nice little bimble out tonight, nothing serious just wanted an hour out on the bike seeing its been so nice today. Gave me a chance to tyr out some new gravel / hard pack tyres too. If the forecast is looking dry next week il run with them I think. They have just enough off road grip for dry conditions I recon but will prob be terrible on wet grass etc, so things could get interesting real quickly lol
Really I'm just counting down the days until the south downs way now. Il probably get out over the weekend for 25k and hopefully get for a swim too but mainly I'm all done training now I think.

Day one of our Winchester to Eastbourne ride is in the bag, and boy that was certainly an eye opener for all of us.
Full write up to follow but after setting off at 6.30am we limped into the pub B&B at about 4.30pm after 72k of ridiculous hill after hill [emoji16]. It was certainly challenging.

Day 2 is now over and we've just had a nice evening meal and a few beers. Today was probably the easier of the 2 days but I had to drop off the route and jump on a train for the 2nd half of it.
I expected my legs to be tired or my bum to be too sore but after 35k my lower back started to give some real gyp. Herniated a disk a few years ago and it was telling me I'd done a bit too much.
So I'm a bit disappointed not to have fully complete today but on the other hand il be fresher for the final 20 miles tomorrow.
The few photos below really don't do the countryside justice, it's stunning, and with the weather we have had its been pretty much perfect.
I can't emphasis just how hilly its been though, nothing prepared me for it, and both days have included a fair bit of pushing [emoji16]
Onwards to the finish line tomorrow now! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190523/86e45603f56cf13ae9ed7cbed5f96444.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190523/5235077febd1a21c4742aa8c9eb60e7e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190523/d054947f50598cb48c85f5b2162c06b0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190523/221b6fb14cedcedc4bfccab62328eeb1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190523/9b1723e8d3b829399d8c2ad0d28b6332.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190523/0c93b414d6036daf3442315fd64669d9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190523/1afa1bcd9e8e626428a34758e1003626.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190523/6c84067cb06f6cdd10e590107d6b7996.jpg

It's the day after the day after and I'm still basking in a post achievement glow of some sort.
Over 3 days I managed just shy of 85 miles and about 8000 ft of climbs. My legs are still a bit stiff now even after a session of acupuncture yesterday and really I could do with a good stretching session still.
The 3 days we had riding together was pretty much perfect, the weather was great, hot in places but usually there was plenty of breeze about to keep it pleasant. We met loads of walkers and cyclists, most happy to chat for a few minutes about the route and the ride.
I'm still laughing to myself about the hills, they were many, they were steep, and when you thought you'd got to the top usually you were just a turn away from another and another and another.
Mainly though it was just a joy to be out laughing and riding in the sun with my 2 brothers, away from work and pretty much carefree. Life don't get much better than that.
What's next? Well we talked a lot as we rode along and there's a few ideas floating about. Coast to coast was mentioned more than once but that will require a lot more training and possibly a new bike [emoji16].

I've just bought the Mrs this. It's a calibre rake 29, pretty cheap but gets great reviews and in all honesty it does not feel a lot less than my trek which was twice the price. Anyway it will be perfect as an entry point for my wife to start getting out into the countryside with me. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190718/8364e7ff4ad21472c88f6a97d8dcd1bb.jpg

Been a while since I've updated this thread and tbh I've been a bit lazy with the cycling lately, however I did get out at the weekend with the Mrs which was a good laugh. She's no where near as fit as me but loves her new mtb and is keen to get out on it more.
We had a couple of hours around Delamere forest on Sunday morning, no massive hills but lots of undulating fire tracks so that got the heart rate up, it's a perfect training ground for a new rider I think.

Despite not riding much lately I've still been busy with a few nice upgrades for the bike, these being a new set of better specc'd forks and a much improved tubeless ready wheelset. The forks have a bit more travel, a greater range of adjustment and are air sprung too.
I'm going to try and get out on it later for a bit of a shake down test before a much longer ride at the weekend. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190911/b87e249f04fb7cce36e1ff4c32d22a3b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190911/3271f6b66a5e2319908525f3983bde9e.jpg

Had a really good, challenging morning out riding the Surrey hills with my 2 bothers, my 14 Yr old nephew and an old school mate on Saturday morning.
I was expecting to really struggle as I'd had an upset stomach since the Tuesday before meaning a few days off work spent alternating between shivering in bed and explosive visits to the toilet. Was totally my own fault [emoji16] and suffice to say Ive learn a valuable food safety lesson[emoji849][emoji106][emoji6].
Anyway that said Saturday morning I felt almost back to normal but still set off with a bag packed with spare immodium capsules as well as spare toilet roll just in case!
The ride was v hilly but I actually felt pretty fresh, and was surprised how much more lively the bike felt with the new wheelset, it definitely felt easier on the uphill climbs I guess due to reduced weight of the wheels. The new forks also feel a lot more sophisticated so I was v pleased with both.
Over the course of 4 hours, 35k and some huge hills we all had a really good laugh even when one of us snapped a chain and we managed to bodge a repair that got us home.
I have to say the the Surrey hills around Dorking / box Hill are absolutely stunning for mtbing.
I feel like I've got the bug again now, il be out again looking for hills next week. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190915/99b5c06dd410e257fcc3262c917d4ae4.jpg

It was a nice day today. Starting with 4 degrees C at 8:30am going to over 20 in the afternoon. Sunny and nice. Ideal for biking. We have made some 40 km in a lazy mode. We had a nice lunch as well - fried carp, french fries and tomato salad, which made the 20 km on the way back a real challenge for me.

I'm resurrecting this tread!
Last year was a personal cycling write off tbh, I worked all through covid and really lost all passion for exercising in general.
But new year new start and all that and tbh I've really missed getting out and about (plus I've deffo piled on the lbs over the last months)
I've set myself a target of 2021km across the year split between cycling and walking (gotta keep the dog happy).
As an incentive to myself I bought a new ride which should be a great do everything bike. Steel frame, chunky tyres, flat bars, shimano groupset, loads of mounting points for every possible luggage option. It's a GENESIS CDF20 gravel bike so made for a mixture of road and off road.
I took it out on Sunday and although I've done very little riding lately managed a cold but very enjoyable 50k loop around Liverpool.
Can't wait to test it further!

Looks a great bike Ben, Genesis make some great machines. I bought a Specialized Gravel bike called the Diverge a few years back and really loved it as it felt a bit like my road bike but you could tackle some off road singletrack on it aswell.
What are the tyres you have on the GENESIS, mine are a bit more like slics but I need some knobblies for the roads at the moment because they are so terrible during this winter weather.
Hi Ben, nice looking bike.
I don't know if you are aware, but there is a good bike forum "cycle chat". They have lots of quite active discussions/advice etc on MTB's etc (I tend to spend quite a bit of time on the "vintage" section as I enjoy doing up old steel bikes as a pastime, photo is one of my favourites :) )

Thanks :) Riding position is less upright than mountain/gravel bikes (more streamlined - like that makes much difference at my age ). I like drop bars though as they give more options for hand positions than flat bars.
When I first got back on a racing bike I spent most of the ride "on the tops" or "ramps" as I was no longer flexible/confident enough to get my hands "in the drops". After a few rides though I managed to, and it led to a faster and more exhilarating ride :)
I have about ten bikes, including a couple of MTB's - old school, steel and no suspension. One of my frames was built around the same time that I was born: work of art, fast and comfortable
There is something about classic steel bikes imo.

Fiorelli :youtheman:
Italian bikes can be works of art, you are right about "old racing bikes".
In my eyes "form and function" is epitomised by hand-built steel frames
Modern bikes are lighter (generally), but if you want to save weight have a haircut and a good dump before you ride :)

I commuted by bike until I was pushing sixty and always used a racing bike with flat bars fitted. The last one was an old Puch I'd found dumped, that was like Trigger's broom, near enough the only bits that hadn't worn out and been replaced in the thousands of miles it did were the bars and frame. Funny thing is, I can't for the life of me remember what happened to it!
There is a large interest in vintage bikes at the moment amongst cyclists with bikes from the late 1970s to 1980s particularly sought after.
This vintage scene is very popular and there are quite a few vintage cycle events or there were before the dreaded covid hit!
Prices for bikes on eBay have gone mad over the last year. Once we are out of lockdowns there will either be a lot of bikes left in sheds, or lower prices as people try to get rid of them.

I have five of my eight to sell when the weather bucks up and lockdown eases. I'll be keeping the other three though :).
Might buy an electric bike in about 10 years when I cant get up the hills!:)

I've already started working on building one to my own spec, it'll be a bit different. 24v brush motor and lead acid batteries initially. Took me a while to track down a suitable 'pedal assist' controller.

Thought my cycling days were over. A couple of neuro surgeries took the wind out my sails.
Tried one of my bikes last year was able to ride a cycle path...nearly burst out crying.
I have a steel on one and a orange five-dont think I will be a able to do them justice but an absolute pleasure to turn my legs again.
Hoping this summer to get me covid belly reduced and turn some miles.
Still have a motorbike Sorned...you live in hope!!!!

This Gravel bike has been superb. Rides like a road bike but has off road capabilities too if you want to do a bit of singletrack.

Not really updated this much and truth be told I've not done much riding lately
But I've been on a bit of a health kick and by increasing my general daily movement, keeping to a fairly sensible daily calorie allowance I've managed to drop just over a stone in 6 weeks or so.
I've also booked myself a few days off in early September and am going to to the coast to coast cycle route from Workington to Sunderland. Should be a good challenge over 3 days. Let the training commence!

A little update on all things cycling.
A few months back I signed up to an online fitness coach as I was stagnating a bit and wanted someone to push me and guide me through a weightless programme. Mainly it was for "accountability" and in that respect its helped loads, I'm now 2 stone lighter than I was 3 months ago and feeling fitter than I have been in a few years too. My food intake has changed considerably and I'm being far more sensible in general (though not in any way starving myself). I'm running quite a bit, doing functional weighted movements and also increasing my riding too. Over the last weeks I've started stepping things up and riding more, ditching the car and riding to work (30km round trip) a few times a week and extending my weekend rides up to 50km.
I've still got 5 weeks until my coast to coast ride but I'm very happy with where I currently am in terms of fitness and preparedness. I've treated the bike to a cool set of new wheels from Hunt https://www.huntbikewheels.com/products/gravel-race-disc-wheelset. I have another set of these on my MTB and they have proved to be very good indeed so i thought "why not".
which il be pairing them with a more road orientated tire so that should make things as easy possible (when compared to the current gravel tires i'm running). I've also bought a garmin bike GPS which I have already got the full C2C route downloaded onto set up exactly as each of my day rides.
So for the remaining month or so I just have to ride as much as possible and try to drop another 5 lbs or so to hit my dream target weight.
good news on the fitness thing... its bound to help on your trip.. well done
Incredible progress Ben - well done

So last week was my solo coast to coast attempt. I'm pleased to say it all went pretty much perfectly and I completed 140 odd miles over 3 days and I was lucky enough to have glorious weather to boot too.
The hills were pretty hard work and I'm not ashamed to say I had to push up a few of them but it's still a huge achievement for me.

Well time certainly flies and I've not updated this occasional thread in quite a while by the looks of it.
Cycling has taken a back seat over the first half of this year and I've probably done no more than 50 miles in total. But to give myself a bit of a challenge ive booked a couple of days riding the way of the roses route next month.
http://wayoftheroses.info/
It looks like a nice scenic route, the first half of it might be slightly challenging but then levels off towards the end.

Should be a nice few days riding and this time its be and my brother so if nothing else we will have a few days of bonding & laughs.
That looks like a good route Ben, hope you enjoy it and the time with your brother.

Thanks Pete, I'm certainly looking forward to it mate.
Been a while since this thread had any input so though I would post pic of MTB upgrade. Decided to have Shimano Deore 11 speed 1X on my Cove Hummer MTB so had transplant done this week. Frame is polished raw titanium. Brakes are Hope Tech twin pot hydraulics. Chris King headset and Thomson seat post and stem. Wheels are Mavic X719.

At my age, I don't have the 'get up and go' that I used to, so I'm using a bicycle with an eBike conversion. I still have to pedal though :).

E bikes are a great way to keep cycling. I have a number of friends who bought them and I certainly see plenty when I am out cycling. I am sure I will end up with one one day when I run out of puff!

But you've since come to your senses - so going over the handlebars and landing on your head had a positive outcome then :ner:

Its been a while since I've looked at this tread as well :-)
That's a very nice looking bike, I do love titanium!
I've really not done much cycling at all this year, I did buy myself a new On One Big dog [url]https://www.planetx.co.uk/products/on-one-big-dog-sram-gx-mountain-bike (https://www.flickr.com/photos/162281319@N03/) back in spring with the intention of riding a lot more only to then move into gym & hiking a lot more. Its been hanging in the garage for best part of 6 months so I really should get it out over xmas for a spin.
