I haven't had a tuner in my system for some time now, but do miss Radio 3 in the evenings.

I only need FM, don't care what the tuner looks like and don't want to spend much money (at all).

I have a resonably good roof mounted aerial (nothing fancy, but it pulls in a decent signal).

So, how far will about £50 get me in the used tuner market?

For reference, in the past I have used a Rotel RT-850 and a Denon 260 (mk 2), both of which were very good. Should I be looking further back in time for best value?

What do you suggest (and is £50 a little optimistic)?

Cheers

A&R Cambridge 'T21' go for very little, if you can put up with the Red & Green LED display you can't go wrong

Hi Horace

If your not in a big hurry I will later on in the year be off loading some of the tuners I have obtained for a major comparison based review. All the tuners are analogue with VU meters and date from the 70s to early 80s.

I can't say exactly when I will be doing this but I will more than likely be parting with tuners from Technics, National Panasonic, Sansui, and others. I will only be asking for them what I paid + postage; I will post the sale list here on AOS.

I think its worth waiting but that's up to you, as I am not always very patient myself I would understand if you want to go ahead sooner.

Well, I have to say I am dead chuffed by the generosity shown here.

Jerry has just loaned me a preamp (cheers Jerry :)) and Dave Hewitt has offered me a free tuner! (top man! thanks).

My Better Half has reminded me (with a characteristic pitiful rolling of the eyes) that I have a box** in the attic which contains 'a load of hifi shite' and which may just include the old Rotel tuner I mentioned in my post.

If it's there, I'll save Dave a trip to the post office. If not.....

Anyway, I'm really grateful for all the pms I've received offering advice.

I like this place :)

Neil - thanks. I'll keep an eye out for your forthcoming tuner bonanza.

Cheers

Martin

** actually, it's more than one box - she hasn't spotted the others yet
