Guys and dolls - I've completely rebuilt this thread fixing all the broken picture links from as far back as Webshots photo hosting demise and the more recent Photobucket debacle!

It's been a labour of love, digging out photos of the projects and products from over 7 years ago for the Webshots pics and a little more recently for the Photobucket ones.

They are now hosted / posted via Tapatalk and hopefully they are safe for many years to come.
So no matter which page you jump to from the first Counterweight for Jandl100 back in 2010 or the First Ebony armboards for Marco and MartinT, you will see the original photos with not a broken link insight (well there are a few on quoted posts or customer pics - but I can't fix them ;) ).

It's taken me back to each and every customer, every project, every design, and virtually every measurement, lathe cut and polish made to craft these things.

Latest projects and creations.

An armpod for a Jelco.
This one in stealth black to match the deck and its surroundings.

Next up a range of projects for a customer in London.

This armbase had seen some wear with the arm pillar retaining screw thread stripped.
The original solution was not ideal.

I made a new slightly bigger thread for a grub screw, a second one to beef it up and a third grub screw to properly retain the outer collar.

Should be good for years to come now.

Lastly, a rework of the recent armboard I made.
The tail turned out to be too long. I shortened it to fit. No charge.
The customer had tried to enlarge the SME slot to take a different armbase.
I refurbed it to improve the looks and function with a slight slot for adjustment

This one is a 15mm thick disc armboard in ebony for a Nakamichi Turntable and Alphason HR-100 MCS arm.
The customer supplied a template, shown overlaying the actual armboard.
The last shot is of it all mounted up on the customer deck.

Here is a bit of a make over and fix up project for a Heybrook TT2 turntable.

First a new solid ebony armboard, 18mm thick with the 4 mounting points.
Fitting is a Rega RB arm.

These turntables originally suffered from a well documented problem of the armboard mounting area not being level with the platter.
I carefully shimmed the armboard so that it was perfectly true to the platter in all planes.

Ready to go.

First up a set of counterweights for a Zeta tonearm in bronze. These are to add greater balancing range to the counterweight
shell / carrier into which they bolt.

Ebony headshell spacer pieces made for Montesquieu.
They don't look like much but he was looking for a specific thickness, thinner than others available and keeping it as light as possible.

Of course being ebony they'll sound divine :)

Yes tungsten is not workable. Tungsten copper alloy is workable but a bit less dense.
All 3 of the exotics have an ever increasing cost scale ;)

Tannoy GRF replica's on the go.

These are made from premium quality 21mm thick birch plywood throughout.
The taller narrower footprint to my own design makes fitting them in normal sized rooms much easier.
They retain the same volume and back loaded horn design (computer modelled) as the standard rectangular GRF cabinets.

The vastly better construction materials vs the originals make for a sublime sound.

Birch plywood cut and machined to very high precision.

Prepped to very fine finish.

Here's another Mikro Seiki AX-4G armboard in solid ebony.
SME fitting with threaded inserts to take the armbase bolts.
Bronze bush to clamp to the armboard pillar.
It's extra thick where the armbase fits. You can't have enough lovely sounding ebony.

Here's a project I've been working on.
It involves a Technics SL-1210, ebony, lots of upgrades and fitting a SME 309 arm.

First I wanted to test the concept of applying ebony veneer so I used my scabby old SL-1200 deck as a guinea pig.
I use that plinth/sub-plinth and base to make the armboards and get the spindle to pivot distance right.

I trialled glue first until I found the right one to give an excellent bond and not bleed through.

Pictured here with the ebony armboard and 309 arm.

I'm having to do something different with the pitch control area. Thought of an ebony surround as a first test. I might be able to do a flush veneer though.

The veneer is just using scraps so don't judge it too hard.

The final deck project should be something special.

Tannoy drivers have arrived for installation in the GRF-N cabinets.

Beautifully original, straight out of the sixties. They've been in the same homemade cabinets the whole time.

Here's an ebony armboard for the Technics SL-1210 fitting a Kuzma Stogie Reference tonearm.
The arm requires a depth below the platter of 28mm minimum!
It's a tight fit but I did it.

This one features the mounting system from underneath and is pictured during test mounting and finished on my now ebony veneered test plinth.

This is one I made recently to fit a Kuzma Stogi Reference on a Technics SL-1210. It required careful sizing up and fitting
as tolerances were tight for this arm with the low platter to plinth height.

"Hi Steve,

Tonearm fits perfectly; I've attached a few pictures.

The sound is leaps and bounds ahead of my previous set up, even with a
fairly modded 1210, I just wasn't prepared for the increase in
soundstage and the shear clarity of vocals and every type of
instrument!

The armboard is a fantastic job, beautiful, rock solid and was easy to
fit with the supplied bolts; I can't thank you enough for such
excellent service.

Peter commissioned a pair of my Tannoy GRF narrow/tall style cabinets in premium birch plywood.
I also modded the crossovers for bi-amping and changed all the caps and checks the resistors out.

In spring 2018 I asked Steve to make me a pair of GRF Narrows. I had acquired from my father-in-law a pair of 15" Monitor Golds which he had had from new in early 1973. He had built unported cabinets for them which were close in dimensions and design to Tannoy Lancasters. I did not believe that the speakers were delivering all that they could, and were being held back by their enclosures. Treble was OK, but bass was curtailed and congested. Steve fitted the speakers into the new cabinets and I collected the finished job and installed them in my home. I have been listening for a week or so now, and all the expected benefits have become apparent. The stereo image is taller, wider and deeper, and much more stable than before. The whole sound is more lively, more credible. The bass is greatly extended, and much more taut and agile than before. Treble is cleaner and crisper. In short, the music simply dances.

Next step in the Technics SL-1210 mkII revamp project..
Made up ebony sleeve and top for the on off switch and ebony switch plate got the start/stop and 33/45 rpm buttons.
No plastic, chrome or silver finish in sight soon :)

Next up an ebony pitch slider knob and rubbing the veneer down to smooth finish before sanding sealer applications, more rubbing and finally spray lacquering.

Then it's onto to upgrade fitting and electrical mods

Here's the finished result of a totally revamped Technics SL-1210 mkII deck.

New ebony armboard, new Mike New bearing fitted, new Mike New platter fitted, new Furutech mains cable / Furutech plug / Furutech tonearm / Furutech phono cable fitted.

The deck has been veneered in striped ebony veneer, all the controls converted to ebony, all lights disabled.
The pitch slider was retained but the knob is now ebony :)
I even made an ebony 45rpm single record adapter.

I fitted a new SME309 arm and setup the arm and Transfiguration Proteus cart up and performed listening tests to get it spot on.

It's been a fun project and the proud owner is very happy indeed. More on that later.

Here's one I finished before Christmas..

African Blackwood armboard for the new Technics SL-1200GR deck.
The arm is an Audiomods series 5 with VTA adjustment. Rega fitting.

It is a tough fit due to the size and position of the VTA adjustment assembly.
The armboard fitting is quite different to the SL -12X0 series too.
No problem for me ;)

This is a trial fitting pic. Finishing yet to go.

Here's a brushed Stainless steel tonearm damper weight, bound for the USA.
Fits atop the Fidelity Research FR64s tonearm. This one features a composite insert that's not too hard and not too soft to dampen any micro vibrations that could occur metal to metal.

All ready to collect.
The armlift is a new Jelco one which matches and works well. I fit arm clips to the armlift carriers, so it's all self contained.
Robust, height adjustable feet give a good range of adjustability and levelling.

Progress on an ebony armboard to fit a Mikro Seiki to a Technics SL-150.
The deck requires quite a deep armboard and has 3 long in reaching lobes where the armboard sits. Engineering hat on and an elegant solution will be found.

Pictured here it is not finished / polished yet.

More aluminium work this time a massive block arm mount for a Plantine Verdier turntable.

Machined from a 100mm square block of billet aluminium this 100mm high, 85mm wide and 95mm deep block will be ultra rigid. It's pretty heavy too.

SME arm ready with threaded bolt holes.

Here's a solid ebony armboard for the Technics SL-1210mkII.
This one is to fit an Ortofon TA110 tonearm.
Easy fitting from above using my bespoke fitting kit.
I get quite a few enquiries for fast change boards, so more than one arm can easily be used.
Just three bolts and it's out.
I also do a bolted from underneath fitting.

Step Up Transformer sort out project.
These were very nice 1:100 transformers put in a turned barrel style case, all done by someone else..
Problem was the transformers were not shielded. There was an attempt at shielding but the face plate was wooden.
They hummed big time.

I totally encapsulated the transformer assembly in MUmetal. I turned a copper faceplate that I MUmetal lined.
I mounted the transformer sandwich construction to the faceplate using brass threaded spacers. Transposed the phono sockets and wiring.
Then I MUmetal covered the wiring area.
Tested on my system.
No hum :)

Over 2" diameter thread.
I also test fit them on my own Vitavox S2 drivers.

These will fit a large format horn to a Philips compression driver (somewhere in France).

As always 24 & 21mm birch plywood used throughout.
These feature the tear drop baffle and are bi-wired for true active amping, should the fancy take the new owner.

The lathe I do the machining of ebony and African Blackwood armboard on is indeed a metalworking lathe.
I use Tungsten Carbide indexed cutting tools.
The lathe is a 1940s Southbend all the way from Indiana USA.
Shipped over here no doubt dodged some U-boats as part of the machinery the USA could send us, but not actual weapons before they came into the conflict..

Anyway, it's a 9" swing and does a nice job.

I have a smaller precision lathe from Warco for smaller parts like the stainless steel counterweights, anti skate weights etc.
That's great because it has electronic variable speed from very slow with good torque to 2750rpm, and goes on reverse too.

I fit attachments to the lathes for milling. I don't actually do much of that though..

Both lathes are set up with the lead screw to cut 16 Threads Per Inch required for the Vitavox screw on adapter rings. I make a fair few of those..

Here's more progress on the Fidelity Research FR64s anti skate assembly I was asked to make.

I have turned the rotational cylinder, had 4 drillings and made the counterbalance cone.
Trial assembled so far as I have to wait for the rare threaded bolt (an old bicycle spoke thread I cannot cut) needed to attach it to the arm.
Once I've got that I can do the final machining, clean up/polish and test it on the arm.

Labour of love..

The final part of the Fidelity Research FR64s restoration project to make it complete...
A new lateral weight and rod to support it.
The original had been sheared off at some point and there were teeth marks on the cylinder where someone had tried in vain to remove it.
I came up with a cunning plan to restore it to good as new - without messing with the arm / drilling etc.

They are back with me for a modification to the input (going, DSP bi-amp active, but with the passive capability retained), and a refinish, as they were left for a good long while during a holiday with the sun streaming in on them under a hot sun.

I've been setting up the DSP system that will do the crossover and HF filter necessary to tame the Tannoy horn tweeter.
This route benefits from not using an L-Pad to lower the dB of the tweeter to that of the bass, and also the filter I mentioned is not a passive component one.
Another benefit is being able to run an amplifier most suitable for the tweeter (a EL84 SET amp has been chosen) and a Quad solid state amp for the bass.
Different damping factors can be used to optimum driver control / sound.

I will be setting up the sound side with further measurements and listening tests once the finish is restored.

Here's a couple of Rega 3 point Arm spacers 6mm and 9mm thick, made from solid ebony.

Replace the multi layered and hole one that Rega supply, also pictured.

Customer fitted and sent this report to me.

"Just a little note to say that I fitted the ebony base you made to my RB303 yesterday. Listened to it last night. The improvement is massive.

I was bracing myself a little because it's a big faff for me to change the shim, as my tone arm is hard-wired in and it’s very difficult to get to the soldered joints and re-solder.* So, I didn’t much want to have to remove it again if it didn’t work. I was also expecting it to be ’too much’.

Every Rega owner should have these things. The difference is so huge. Detail as never before. It's like adding a mega cartridge, phono stage or even a new TT!

I have a superb phono stage and use a 2M Black as a cart, which isn’t bad. But I’m getting a properly high end sound now. So much more detail and less stridency. No more etched highs.*

It’s given my home-made TT a new lease of life, and will keep me happy for a couple more years while I save for a Vertere MG1 or a TMS3!

I am hugely grateful to you.

4 equipment feet in turned brass with threaded fixing, washers and nuts.

Also large Vitavox S2 threaded compression driver to horn mounting adapters. First one hewn out and roughly turned from a massive 4.5" diameter chunk of brass bar!

Slight change in requirements on the Vitavox S2 screw on adapters.
The customer's original idea of a walnut ring did not plan out, so 2 rings in brass were made that bolt to the adapters (now look much more like the usual screw on aluminium adapters - this allows for throat alignment and tightening of the bolts).
The brass rings are secured to the horns by 4 countersunk wood screws.
Fun turning project.

Making a few upgrades for this Sorane SA 1.2 tonearm.
The original armbase didn't allow the arm to go low enough - the armlift pot fouled on the base.
It was also too loose and shallow, so tightening the securing grub screw put it out of alignment.

I've made a close tolerance brass armbase. The arm pillar is now a nice smooth, close fit and much deeper.

The moon shaped cut out to allow the arm to go lower is now in the right place too.

This is 250g and features a grubscrew for the underside channel and one for the side as well.
This is 2nd of 3 pieces I'll be turning for this tonearm.

The owner of the Sorane SA 1.2 tonearm was finding it hard to get to the knurled base tightening nuts - you can see why!
So I whizzed up a couple of female threaded cap/hex headed nuts instead. Now a regular 6 sided Allen key (the rounded snub nosed type is even better) can be used with ease. They also have a composite bonded ring washer to cushion against the armbase.

Weighing 3.2 and 2.65g.

These are my own taller, narrower design. Computer modelled to retain the same back loaded horn characteristics as the original design.

Here are a pair of Le Cleach profiled tweeter horns I turned for Simon Mears Audio.
To fit 1" Altec 802 compression tweeter drivers.

Turned from Poplar wood, sealed and then lacquered.

Brass mounting plates are used instead of integral wooden discs as the driver has two threaded mounting bolts, and it's tight with the Le Cleach profile getting the securing nuts on otherwise.

Fun project.

Here's an ebony armboard and fitting job for a gloss black plinthed SP-10.

The thin copper mat, and tall Stax arm and base, meant with the existing MDF veneered armboard was not low enough.

The Stax arm was very interesting. I've not seen one before.
3 interchangeable arm tubes. 2 S shaped and one straight.

Nice setup.

Here's an Armpod and counterweight job that made it to Oz in record time (thanks Transglobal Express).

It's an ultra low but larger diameter pod, full of cast lead for high mass.

2 interchangeable armboards, one for Rega 3 point and one for Linn.

Finished in satin black lacquer and natural ebony.

The stainless steel counterweight is an Alphason heavy work nylon damper insert.

These will go under various pieces of equipment.

The mid bass horn speakers all finished. Palleted and ready to ship to Sunderland.

Rectangular mouths, circa 60cm X 48cm at widest and over 1.2m long.
Computer modelled in Hornresp first.
Going to used around 95Hz to 400Hz
Made from 6mm void free birch plywood sheets, laminated in several layers to be exponentially flared / curved.
Backboxes from 21mm birch plywood.
12" Eminence bass driver gives excellent detail / punch in this frequency range and is ideally suited to front horn loading.

A new pair of my premium birch plywood cabinets are underway.
These are computer modelled to have the same back loaded horn characteristics as the regular rectangular GRFs.
These are taller and deeper to achieve the same volume and horn path, but with a more room friendly footprint.

100% 21mm premium birch plywood is used throughout. Featuring tear drop baffles and cloth blacked needled wood felt damping.

The first cabinet is nearing completion. Plinths, drivers etc to go.

These will have separate birch plywood boxes for the crossovers.

Always very nice to work with premium birch plywood.

Next up are two Verdier Platine turntable style solid copper cube bases and ebony top boards.
The copper cubes had to be cast at a foundry and weight 5-6kgs each.
The ebony armboards are 2x1" thick and 2x1.25" thick.

The Cabinets I made for a pair of Tannoy HPD drivers could finally be collected after the lockdown easing.

The drivers were dropped off to me and I installed them during the day for afternoon collection.

The aftermarket crossovers are external hence dedicated boxes.
Nice components in the crossovers.

We also used high quality Janzen integral cable and gold plated Tannoy 4 pin plugs.

These are built using the Scandinavian birch plywood throughout and designed to be taller and narrower than the original Tannoy GRFs.
Modelled you have the same tuned backloaded horn path.
These also feature the bass cleaning up Tear drop baffle in the throat of the horn section.

Finished in English light oak.

The customer (a Dolby surround sound engineer) had the drivers in original chipboard Tannoy Berkeley cabinets.
Needless to say the cabinet material, construction and backloaded horn bass make these a very much improved Hi-fi experience.

The customer in Hawaii didn't want the visible copper sides too bright.
So I came up with a black powder partial dusting that is then clear acrylic finished.

Made from solid stainless steel 6mm thick plate.

Double grubscrews on both the armpillar and Jelco arm lift.
An elegant solution to easy and safe cueing.

Using a Jelco armlift and Audio Technical arm clip.

It cleverly allows the use of the anti-skate mechanism too

A little fix for a broken Fidelity Research FR64s / FR66s tonearm.

This is a replacement fit for the lateral weight mounting rod - these do seem to get sheared off.
No easy way to remove the sheared off bit / replace sometimes.

I make a very thin walled sleeve that fits over the arms lateral weight mounting position. This can be hobby glued in place by the customer and the lateral weight used as normal.

Pictured here, with and without my own lateral weight - testing the fit.

Matching finish to the original.

I've been fettling a Fidelity Research FR64s for a customer.
The arm was bought as sold..
As a FR64s owner / user, I could compare it to mine.

These are heavyweights for low compliance MC cartridges.
So nicely made and machined.

A few things needed addressing.
Armlift rubber missing, lift pot needed attention and re-siliconing.

The heavy anti-skate weight was missing - made a new one.

The armbase (not original), had a poorly made sleeve that allowed the armpillar to wiggle - I machined new close fitting one and 2 nylon tipped grubscrews.

Sounds superb and will go on another 50 years.

A couple of ebony armboards.

Firstly for a Voyd 3 mounting hole board.
Replaces a very thin and tinny metal plate one, drilled for 2 arms (sort of) - lovely sounding and looking ebony instead[emoji846]

SME mounting with blind nuts set in for easy arm attachment.

Several orders for Tannoy GRF style cabinets have come in!

Here's a regular rectangular cabinet in the making.

These will take a pair of 15" HPD eight mounting hole drivers.

Made from 24mm (all external panels) and 21mm premium faced dense birch plywood.

Panels for one cabinet, cut, machined and sanded to finished level.

This time it's a solid one piece ebony armboard for a Technics SL-1210 GR deck.
A Linn fitting for both a Supatrac Blackbird sideways unipivot (interesting new arm) and a Syrinx tonearm.

The benefits of ebony over other materials are well reported of course.

Progress on the big Tannoy GRF replica cabinets.
These are made of 24mm thick premium birch plywood.
The 21mm supply that I'd used previously for the sides and back has dried up completely..

These are extra heavy of course.

The customer came down with the drivers and Mainly Tannoy new crossovers (very nice).

Also a custom grille and plinth solution. More about those later.

The cabs will now be finished, plinthed, etc.

The Tannoy GRF style cabinets for the HPD 385 drivers, I made have been finished and collected.
The owner is very happy with them.

He requested a different plinth arrangement octagonal, a large spike in each corner (something he already had, and liked the look), showing infront of the plinth corners.
Instead of half or long grilles an American made round mesh grille that fits snugly on a pressed flange that I fitted onto the front of the drivers.
The usual Tannoy front foam rubbers after easily removed.
A thinner strip of foam rubber was applied between each surface and the 8 bolts hold it all together.

I had a request to fit a Pioneer PL-71 tonearm to a Technics SK-1210 mk2.

This is something I had done myself many, many moons ago.
The customer read about it.
The arm was good fathers. The Pioneer deck sadly no longer around.

The Acos made PL-71 tonearm Requires a very low mounting point.
Twice as low as a standard Jelco!

No problem, I have very thick solid Ebony blocks.
Lots of dishing required.

Here is my PL-71 arm fitted to my test mule deck.

Super dense and hard. Only topped by Lignum Vitae for that.

Drilled for a Grace arm fitting.
With a recess machined in underside to allow the arm securing nut to thread on a bit more than the standard TW Acustic metal arm plate allows

A pair of 1.9m high bass horns.
These will reach down to 50Hz and up to 400Hz

They will be the rythm section of a multi horn system and bound for Germany when finished.

Designed using computer modelling and using the classic horn loading friendly Eminence Kappa 12 driver.

Solid ebony armboard for a new Technics SL-1210 GR deck.
Custom extra thick crafted to fit the Audiomods series 6 tonearm with VTA adjuster mechanism.

This one features bolts from above mounting, and my non-invasive fitting kit.
The customer wants to be able to move the arm to other decks without the hassle of taking the turntable apart every time.
Simple to just remove the armboard and remove the arm locking nut.

Ebony, the perfect balance of dampening and tonal resonance.
Less dense than aluminium etc, but still a very dense natural wood. It absorbs the very low frequency tonearm oscillations -
No ringing metal! No outer ring and thinner centre plate held together with bolts!

This one features non-invasive mounting from below / flush top surface.

These are 1.7m long (horn path) exponential bass horns.
Will cover 50Hz to 400Hz, using 12" horn loading friendly Eminence drivers.

Backboxes are from 21mm birch plywood.
Platforms and support yolks for the smaller horns to go.
