Hi Peeps , Got around to thinking about a new pocket sprung mattress :)
The old one is probably ten years old and despite having a seperate memory foam topper , ( which are great ) I need to think about another ?
Pocket sprung is probably a must , but latex is not something I would discount either !! Going on a wooden slatted oar bed frame that is in VGC
Price is not a key factor - was just looking for some really good tips from you guys !! ?:eyebrows:

We need a new mattress so will be looking at this thread with interest. I suspect it's very difficult to generalise as we have different needs/preferences. I had never heard of Otty but it does get great reviews and the 100 day trial removes the risk so we might give one a trial.

Which magazine has recent review with very useful data on firmness, breathability etc. Recall one Ikea mattress scored highly at low price.

Though I wouldn't be looking at pocket sprung mattresses either. I have a lower spinal injury and prefer a firmer memory type foam mattress.

Top ones are about this. Some dearer. Can get decent ones a lot cheaper tho. Got one recently for 200 off amazon. quite good Italian mattress too

Best with a topper on top as its fairly firm. It's come down a bit. Comes in a tube like box vacuum sealed.

You can spend a lot on a mattress and get 10 years out of it. Personally, I have found 5 years to be more realistic lifespan for most good quality mattresses. It's not just about physical durability!

Yes Marco ,thank you . Of course , you need a really well padded headboard because you Italian types would have a wooden one slamming the wall like a steam hammer !!!:)
Just to let you know I made a decision this morning . My son did a lot of research a couple of yrs ago ,and decided on John Ryan Mattresses in Manchester (they manufacture their own )
He bought a top of the range latex topped mattress £600
So having had memory foam toppers on a firm pocket sprung mattress before , and looked at their videos on topper materials I have purchased a hybrid latex topped foam one from them !

If I was to reply to anyone asking what a good mattress costs , then I am unsure what exactly to say ,other than quality does count , more so if your spine /body needs proper support during sleep , and considering the hrs of our life spent on such an item , it therefore follows , that spending a bit more , on what you perceive to be the right product for you ,is paramount !!!
I remember ten yrs ago buying an 'orthapedic' mattress off a man , from an ad in local magazine , and if I had found him afterwards ,he would have needed an orthapedic mattress after I had finished with him . :doh:

Everybody has a different solution. I bought a modest memory foam mattress off ebay about ten years ago for around £120 and have been very comfortable ever since and the matresses has no depressions in it yet. Mind you, I only weigh a bit over 11 stone and the wife weighs about as much as an empty crisp packet, so the mattress probably has an easy time.

Very true Geoff . I am about 15 stone and the other half a bit less !!! Up until a few years ago ,I could sleep anywhere , but as soon as bad backs , ciatica , and other things appear , you dont realise how lucky you are !!
A memory topper was the first great addition we made 15 yrs or so ago.
Then we had a newer mattress and another new topper . So now as we are both over 60 , looking for the next level up ;)
When you actually are craving to get to bed because its so comfy , you know its must be the right thing !!:eek:
Doesn't matter how light you are. Lying down, for hours on end every night, repeatedly in the same position (the one you naturally settle into as most comfortable when asleep) will eventually take its toll on your mattress, thus it will no longer provide your body with the required support, eventually leading to back problems or worse...
And with cheap mattresses [built using inferior materials], that process simply happens quicker!! Trust me, I know about these things, as for years I used to sell the buggers;)

What's your idea though of "dear"? We paid just under a grand for our last kingsize mattress, from Sleepeezee, which on average lasts for a good 10-12 years (if looked after properly), and which means turning it round every so often, to ensure even-weight distribution.

inclined usually to get one for 400/500, but last few have been cheaper and last about as long. im fairly big and being in a double yourself means you end up in middle and its the bit that goes saggy eventually. turning alas doesnt help so much as if there is 2 of you. dearest was about 800, but it didnt last twice as long as a 400.

Often one can pay for gimmicks, such as that 'memory foam' nonsense, which only works up to a point. There's nothing to beat a well-designed traditional pocket-sprung mattress - and the best ones weigh an absolute TON, for very valid reasons!
If you can easily move your mattress, when it's sitting on the bed, and/or push down the springs with your hand, at the sides or in the centre, then chuck it in the bin, as it's not fit for purpose.

Had a Sleepezee mattress many years ago, nowt wrong with it, and I don't remember it being overly expensive.
When I took up with Mrs. P she had a waterbed, which I wasn't too keen on - good for lazy sex (one push then let the bed do the rest), and warm when you first get in, but a bugger to have temperature just right as it imposes its own temperature rather than just insulate your own body heat. And It was a total arse to get out of!
So about four years ago we decided to have a change. We shelled out nearly 2 grand on a Tempur bed (and that was in the sale!) and while initially it seemed good, I soon grew to hate it. It doesn't wick away body heat like a regular mattress, and also it's harder to turn over. As soon as we can afford a pocket sprung mattress, Tempur is going to the tip.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Happy Beds Milk Vitality off Amazon for £300. I get the best sleep ive had for years out of if. Had it for 2 years now and showing no signs of wear at all. On the firmer side if you prefer it that way.
