Lovely set up. What do you think of the Sony APR 5003? It's my favourite R2R machine.

Unfortunately it’s no where near as tidy as this now , Im running out of storage space for the vinyl , 10’ Reels take up loads of space and I’ve now got my guitars and amps in here too
I’m the first to admit it’s a mess BUT it’s my mess and l love chilling out in here
Charlie, Al ,Alan and the late Stewart Emmings . Reading all your posts about R2R years ago got me started on this journey when I was quite happy with my vinyl ,valves and horns . It’s amazing when you think your system can’t sound any better then you hear a master copy on a studio R2R , I was hooked after hearing Stewart’s system in the Lodgesound room at Scalfold and there’s not much i that I can add to what’s already been said about the APR5003v imho I think it’s up there with the best studio machines , simply stunning

Thanks For the nice comments Marco,Brian & mike
It’s taken a long time to get it sounding good ,well to my ears at least in this room . It’s not exactly an ideal space with high ceilings, one wall nearly all glass with the large bay windows and wooden floors to top it off
The DSpeaker antimode helped sorting out some bass issues , I was never a believer in adding any digital correction to my system but it really worked for me in this space
I might upgrade the turntable setup at some point in here but for now I’m going to concentrate on setting up a second system in the living room going down the classic tried and tested Tannoy, Garrard, Thorns, Radford route ......wish me luck !!!!
I’m in no rush so I’ll wait for the bits that I really fancy to come up in the classifieds , I’ll update the thread as I gather the gear .....this may take some time

Yes ,the AOS room was the first time I’d heard big tannoys sounding the way I like to hear my music
A lot of effort must have went into getting that system “on song “ and it showed on the day

Much bigger than the old ones but they fit the room better somehow.
good space for them too, bet they is going to sound killer.

I’ll look into that Marco ......I heard one of these amps briefly at Josie’s , sounded very nice too
Think I’ll need all the power I can get to control the HPDs
Yeah, Jo's got the same amp as me. Firstly, the Copper amp will drive the HPDs with EASE, as I've heard my amp (and Jo's) driving a pair of Canterbury's, with 15" HPDs, and trust me it's not an issue. 30W, or so, of Class A valve power is plenty!
And solid-state wise, anything around 80W or so would be fine, or with Class A, less.
Secondly, if you're currently just using the stock Tannoy crossovers, then you've still got a BIG upgrade to come!:D
Marco.
Still enjoying the Lockie's, mate?:)
At some point further down the line, as first you'll want to get used to your HPDs, you could try some 15" Monitor Golds in those cabs, as they have a rather different sound [more effortless, with greater 'presence' and even more musical, IMO], and they're MUCH easier to drive than HPDs, so your 'flea-powered' SET amp would be fine and likely a great match!
So... No need for another amp, simply change your drivers! Doubt it would cost too much either, as what you'd get for selling your (minty) HPDs would pretty much pay for some MGs. Just a thought, to further fuck with your head...:eyebrows:;)
Oh, obviously don't sell your HPDs until you've heard 15MGs in the same cabs (with dedicated X-overs), just in case you still prefer the former, so you'll have to fork out a bit to start with.
Marco.

Hi Marco
It did cross my mind to swap out the HPDs , I’ve waited so long to get these I dread to think how long it would take me to find a decent condition pair of Golds , I’ll keep my eyes peeled on the classifieds and see what pops up first
Didn’t take me long to start mucking about with them .......after reading a few old posts regarding how tightly the bolts should be holding the drivers , I had a quick check tonight and realised that I’d over tightened them , as most thoughts seem to suggest tight enough to hold them but not crush the foam seals , slackened them off a bit , and, the sound has a definite improvement, more clarity and treble is sweeter.....3 hours later and I’m still listening just now
Good stuff, Stuart, those types of tweaks defo help, and I'm glad that you're really enjoying your choons:)
Definitely don't rush into anything, and get used to what you've got first before contemplating trying some MGs... But, as I've heard both at length in different cabs and with all sorts of different amps, I can say with some certainty that you'd LOVE what the MGs do on the end of a suitable (quality) valve amp - it really is a magical sound and a BIG part of what you heard and loved that time at Scalford...
:trust:

Your right, Mate
Just enjoying them for the moment , there totally different to my 97db Horns and 8w SET combo that’s in the room next door
Lol... Oh, I've no doubt they are! And I suspect I'd also enjoy your horns, as I like what they do when done well, and I rate the gear that you're using them with:)
If I could draw a comparison, in terms of the above and HPDs vs. MGs (the latter driven by an appropriate valve amp), it would be that the MGs will give you that lovely expansive/airy mid and top end of your SET/horns combo, along I suspect with a warmer (but not overblown) more tonally rich bass, than delivered either by the horns or your HPDs.
So try and wrap your head around that description...
The criticism I have of HPDs, although it's largely a matter of personal taste, is that in comparison with 15" MGs, they can sound a little 'constrained', dynamically, and lack 'presence' (by that I mean you need to listen to them louder before they 'come alive' and properly fill the room with sound), plus the mids can be slightly 'shouty' with some material, and bass frequencies, despite being generated by such huge drive units, can bizarrely sometimes feel a little lightweight ['thuddy'] and lacking in impact.
It's one of the disadvantages of them employing the use of heavier cones and magnets, in order to handle higher amplifier power. The cones on MGs are lighter and therefore tend to react faster to transients.
This means that the bass with 15" MGs is just that bit more 'fleshed out'/elastic/tuneful and effortless, which is largely a trait of the difference in cone construction. Hopefully all that makes some sort of sense. Please remember though that my criticisms of the HPDs are only in terms of the areas where the MGs positively excel, so in reality they're not massive or worth fretting over:cool:
Marco.
Any views on that, Stuart?:)

Sorry I missed this earlier ,
I must admit it’s great having both systems setup and running , although I’m totally aware that my amp that’s driving the HPDs is not ideal, still it gives me a glimmer of what’s to come ,either by an Amp change or a Driver swap to some MGs........let’s see what I can find first lol
Your description of the HPDs is spot on , I’m definitely having to crank the volume to get them singing , because they were only reconed a few weeks ago I’m thinking they will still be more hours required to break them in .......I’ll drop Lockwood a line to see what (if any) time they recommend before there bedded in ,so to speak, still enjoying the room filling sound though.....Richard / Linda Thompson - Bright Lights playing at the moment and the guitars and vocals are stunning , great presence
It’s really great getting good solid advice on these from experienced owners , unlike the jump into the dark I took when trying to sort out the horns years ago !!! Don’t ask .....seemed to take forever to get them sounding decent
No worries, Stuart - I was worried you'd fallen out with me!:D
Yeah, after re-coning they'll be a bit 'tight', so will defo take some time to loosen up, both physically and musically, so you've certainly got more to come:)
Glad you're enjoying them, and yes they will certainly produce a big sound- it's difficult for speakers the size of a small wardrobe not to!
Trust me, the Lockwood cabinets you've got make ANY 15" Tannoy DCs sing. I've heard Monitor Reds, Golds and HPDs in them, and IMO there is NO better enclosure available that brings out their sound in such a musically rewarding and addictive way. So ignore any so-called 'experts' telling you that you can 'upgrade' them by bracing the cabinets more rigidly and applying added damping - all it does is suck the life out of them!
They're designed to let the music 'breathe', not stifle it. However, later down the line improved crossovers, using the best modern caps, resistors and inductors will definitely improve matters. I'm glad that I've nailed the 'HPD sound'. I know it so well, as indeed I do the MG one, and I think if you were able to A/B the two, with appropriate amps, you'd easily hear where I was coming from.
Anyway, it'll be interesting to see where you take things from here:cool:

Unfortunately not ,Marco
The search continues
After a fair bit of mucking about I moved the Majors out of the lounge ( due to Christmas decorating ) and into the smaller sitting room which was supposed to be a temporary measure ,but to my surprise, I’m really enjoying the sound there making in here , the room is 4x5m into the bay window , I thought they’d need the big room to sound at there best , but I’m totally surprised with there performance in the new location ........they look ridiculously big in here but the near-field listening is pleasantly surprising
Lol..... THAT is *SO* funny, mate - but in a good way!!:D
Why? Because it's what I've always said and found myself... I use mine in a small room, a little bigger than that one, and much prefer listening to them near field, as you describe:)
I know it's contrary to what you might think with such big speakers, but I also discovered the same thing in Scalford Hall, when I took them down to the show and put them into a big room, and they sounded ok, but nowhere near as good as they did in my much smaller room.
For me, if you sit further away from big Tannoy DCs, the bass dominates too much, but with more near filed listening it's just right, and deep and authoritative, plus the mids and top end are really clear and crisp, natural and lifelike. I guess it makes sense that they work better near field, as that's how they'd have been used in studios!
Enjoy...
Marco.
The big ones were used in studios but not as near field monitors. I think you'd have trouble fitting them onto the console bridge!
'Near field' in a studio is literally just a couple of feet from ear to speaker.
Here you can see how he has his near field monitors on the console and the full range monitors a little further back. (B&W not Tannoy but you get the idea):

Yes I know what you mean, but you need to look around at some vintage/specialist studios, liable to use speakers such as Stuart's and mine, to see what I mean, such as old pics of control rooms at Abbey Road, or smaller (all analogue) studios, such as Toe Rag [pics courtesy of Jo's site Tannoyista]:
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/922/X5Wgd0.jpg
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/40EP73.jpg
That looks pretty near-field to me!:eyebrows:;)
Although those are Lockwood Universal cabs, which are smaller than Majors, they're still pretty big - and much bigger than the near-field monitors used in modern studios today, such as you've shown. In any case, it doesn't detract from the observations both Stuart and I have made, which is that big Tannoy DCs sound better in smaller rooms than bigger ones - that's certainly what many years of experience has told me!
Anthony also uses his Kensington SEs, near-filed in a small room. He can't be sitting any more than about 2/3 meters from his, and they sound fab.
Marco.
The thing about small studios is that they cannot afford to optimise everything so you get situations like at Toe Rag. If you'd offered to pay for them to build a bigger control room I'm sure they would not have turned you down. :)
Big Tannoy do work well in small spaces no doubt, heard that many times including at your place but it isn't an absolute truth that they are better in small spaces, just that some people prefer to listen close to the speaker (and not just with Tannoy).
Tannoy being dual concentric facilitate this, unlike an otherwise similarly capable large three or four way speaker which needs to be some distance from the listener for the multiple, separated sound sources to coalesce into one.
Personally I prefer to listen to any speaker in a larger room and I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

Sure, but that doesn't detract from the fact that they sound great in there.

Course not - nothing in audio is an "absolute truth", and of course personal preference comes into it, but I've heard too many pairs of big Tannoys in too many different rooms over the years, big and small for them clearly sounding better in the latter simply to be just a coincidence, therefore I do believe that there is something intrinsically in their design causing that, not simply just my preference.
The biggest shock in that respect, was how much worse mine sounded in a much bigger room at Scalford [after folk had been nagging me for ages about how much better they'd be in a bigger room that would 'allow them to breahe', lol], compared with what I get at home, and which made me re-evaluate things accordingly.
Even in Ian Walker's place, which I believe you've been to, with his Canterbury's, in a room bigger than mine (longer) with a concrete floor, we used to spend ages moving his sofa back and forth trying to convince ourselves that it *should* sound better further back away from the speakers, only later to move it forward again, as it clearly sounded better that way:)
Yes I know you prefer listening to speakers in a larger room, and with different speakers able to benefit accordingly, I would too... But THAT is the key issue. Even you wouldn't prefer listening that way if your ears clearly told you that the speakers in question sounded worse!;)
Marco.

Ian's room only slightly larger than yours, still a small room. I'm not sure I'd take that one example at Scalford as definitive. From memory that is a very large room with very high ceilings. Rooms can be weird in a number of ways.
So what was it that you felt that the sound lost compared to using the Lockwoods in your room? Was it not just the case that you were listening from further away? Did you try listening at the same distance as you do at home? If so was that also worse?

Indeed, very true, but that wasn't the main reason for the speakers sounding how they did, compared with what I'm used to at home. However, don't get me wrong, they still sounded excellent (indeed what we produced at that show prompted some folks, including Stuart here, to go for Lockwoods and/or buy a Copper amp), but just didn't quite generate the magic I get with them at home.
As you say, some of that was because although my room's small, the walls are thick and solid, as is the floor, even though it's wooden and suspended, and the oak beams and angled parts of the ceiling help with refections/aid acoustics, and you're just not going to get that in a hotel room, but what I'm mainly talking about is where the speakers themselves are 'happiest' (including the optimal sound dispersion of the DC drive units themselves).
So what was it that you felt that the sound lost compared to using the Lockwoods in your room? Was it not just the case that you were listening from further away? Did you try listening at the same distance as you do at home? If so was that also worse?
Interesting (and valid) questions, the answers to which pretty much confirm the point I'm making...
Firstly, the sound lacked the 'intimacy' I'm used to, and the whole musical experience just didn't sound as 'cohesive', lifelike or involving - it was like a 'watered down' version of such, and because I couldn't quite achieve optimal positioning, as a result of the room layout (into the corners and heavily toed in towards the listening position), there was a 'bloom' to the bass [always happens when the cabs are used in any kind of 'free space'] and lack of gravitas, neither of which I get at home, especially the latter!
Plus, there were other things that weren't quite right, responsible largely because of the sub-optimal positioning of the speakers and general acoustics of the hotel room.
Regarding your second point, it was no 'happy coincidence' that the seats at the front, or nearest the front of the room and the speakers, was where the sound was best, and the further back you sat, the worse it got, and where the bass began to dominate - which is one of the problems of using these speakers in a big room and sitting further away than optimal from them.
You can use large Tannoys in a big room, providing that they're placed into the corners, right next to the back wall, and you arrange your seating position near-field in front of them, as long as you're happy that the sound elsewhere in the room will be sub-optimal. Also, the 'point source' dispersal of the sound, intrinsic to the DC drivers, especially the mid and top end, has a very specific/limited 'sweet spot', so unless you position yourself (and your ears) in *exactly* that area, the sound will be compromised.
That's simply what happens with big Tannoy DCs in my, not inconsiderable, experience!
Marco.
Well there's no way I will be able to position mine like that (if they ever get finished) plus I do listen off axis a lot, so maybe it's an non-starter?
Your room is quite different from mine, as are the drivers and cabinets/porting of your speakers, so I'm still confident that you'll still like the result. It won't be perfect though, but nothing ever is!:)
Anyway, does it look like you'll be getting them for Christmas, as stated, or will we still be talking about them, rather than listening to them, this time next year... Tell Sean to get his arse in gear!!:ner:;)
Marco.

My APR has been working faultlessly since it’s full service last year by the lovely and very knowledgeable guys at Audio Related , I can’t recommend them enough

Stuart, your Sony APR looks awesome. What a machine. Did you know that you can buy a custom stand (https://www.reeltoreelworld.com/product/custom-made-stand-for-sony-apr/) for it?

Cheers Paul ,
I searched so long for one in decent condition that I’d almost given up hope then this one turned up
I had a bit of a love/hate relationship with it when I first got it as there were some issues that needed sorting out and if id found one sooner it would have went to the late Stewart Emmings for a service and setup (I blame Stewart for putting me on this path ) but unfortunately that wasn’t to be .
It eventually went down to Simon Griffett of Audio Related Tech in Chesham who was recommended by Charlie (topoxforddoc) , Simons a lovely guy, answered all my daft questions and got it back to its former glory
You’ll need to pop over sometime for a listen mate
I had no idea that someone was making suitable stands , I’ve been regularly searching all the usual used haunts for one but have had no luck, thanks for that
The Sony APR has the best designed, easiest and clearest tape path for threading and editing. :)

Love the Sony reel-to-reel tape machine.
A man after my own heart: a Thorens TD124/II with SME 3009/II and Ortofon SPU cartridge; though I don't use, as see no need for the P1 spacer under the armbase.
Nice collection of LPs. :) Well done.
That Thorens is lovely. What SPU did you go for Stuart?
Also, how are you enjoying the Tannoys? Are they your main speaker now? Still HPDs or did you find Golds for them?

The SPU in the pics is a vintage GT model (MM with the built in Tansformers) lovely sounding thing !!!
I’ve usually got the SPU GM Mkii Mono fitted to this setup on a SME 3012 but I’ve been messing today , I forgot how good the 3009/SPU GT sounded , something really engaging about it
Tannoys are still in the main system , still got the HPDs in them
Xover upgrade will be coming imminently unless a nice STA25 turns up first
The Horn project is on hold for the time being as I’m considering building a garden room to accommodate all the toys
Still at the planning stages but I definitely think this is the way forward

There my old Opera Consonance M12 horns , I’m using them in the lounge system at the moment with some flea power amps , they make a nice contrast to the Large Tannoys in the other room 😆
Ultimately I’ll be selling them off to fund a (Larger) DIY horn project

I thought I recognised that carpet! I remember these being advertised for sale, and I also remember being very tempted. But I'm not allowed wood-coloured speakers, and these are too nice to be messing with the finish... I also remember them having extra tweeters atop them, I think.
