cold here today but sunny. just over 0C
Light grey sky, slight chill in the air, was just going to burn some stuff but some divvy opposite has just put some washing out (which will probably end up damper when she takes it in than when she put it out).
Cold, heavily overcast. No rain yet but give it a chance. Will probably start as I'm leaving work.
Lovely mild (for the time of year) dry, sunny day here in Wrexham:)
This is one of my favourite times of the year, when most of the 'rabble' (lol) are back at work, and the shops and towns are quiet, with a lot of folks still away on holiday, and Del is off work for nearly another week, so we can enjoy some relaxing quality time together, and get a break from entertaining others!
Consequently, we're going out for a few drinks later at a local country pub, and then a meal at a nice Chinese restaurant, as we need a change of food from the typical 'Xmas fayre' we've been having for the last 2 weeks! Looking forward to it:cool:

Yes please! We need snow here. A few freeze-thaw cycles and freezing rain on top of that, have turned the ski hills into blue ice...suicidal to try skiing them. Can't even trail run or mtn. bike in the local forest for all the ice. This winter sucks. Praying for snow, and lots of it! :D
was a nice if fairly cold day. 5 c at best i'd say;maybe 6 tops, but that cutting wind is gone. could go out in a t-shirt tbh.

If that's how you are dressed you better cover up with a rain coat if it is raining. :)

Got back okay but seriously bad conditions. Feet are like blocks of ice. Got beer in on the way back though so I'm sorted for the evening.

That's quite true. Every city, town and rural county will have a large fleet of snow plowing and salting/sanding trucks, or heavier equipment if it's a big snow area (graders, massive snow blowers, etc.). In our town, if we get 1 cm or 50 cm, it's cleared within 24 hours, usually done overnight and clear by 7:00 AM. Most cars have snow tires, and it seems half the vehicles are all-wheel-drive or 4WD. Nothing stops moving here just because of some snow. Our biggest airport (Toronto) has 94 pieces of snow clearing equipment, including 30 plows, plus 14 snow melters. Well prepared :)
As for the cold, same thing - everyone is used to it. Lots of people still like to complain, but that's usually just a conversation starter and they really don't mind it that much.
We've always felt that we should get outdoors and make the best of winter and enjoy it, rather than stay cooped up indoors and moan about it. Winter sports are terrific fun. Keeps us sane and wards off that terrible seasonal depression. :) We couldn't imagine going a year without skiing or hockey - now THAT would be depressing!

The difference is your Canadian house is probably quite modern with central heating and heavily insulated to protect against the fierce cold. Whereas my house was built in 1901 and only just about keeps the rain out which I'm guessing was pretty much the sole design criteria.

I already replaced all the windows with double glazing and draught proofed everything which did make a huge difference but if the temperature drops down to around freezing you still notice it. Go to brush my teeth and the toothpaste has frozen in the tube. :D Not had that for a few years now though.
On the plus side in that red hot summer we just had it's like having free air-conditioning. Stays nice and cool. Part of the reason is that the house is situated so that it never really catches the sun. At the time it was built this was not really considered since the sun could not make it through all the smoke anyway:

Got a 1KW radiator on. It's not so bad at the moment actually.
Latest forecast for here: wind chill values of -33C tonight, and -42C tomorrow night. Frostbite possible in a couple of minutes at those temps. Damn, that's cold, even for here. Pretty rare we see it get down that far...maybe once every couple of winters. Common out west though, on the prairies.

Coldest I've seen in London was -10C, but that was years ago.
In 2009/2010 it managed -12c here but we are quite high up in the foothills of the Pennines. (That's without windchill factored in btw).

Hmm, pyjama mamas, some of them look quite do-able, but that's about it. I've come across one or two in my work, and even though I definitely would, you just know that when the other half gets in from work there'll be no tea on the table, and the house will still be a shit pit.
A couple of weeks ago I fitted a window for one - she had three month old twins, one of them was screaming the house down, while she sat on the sofa looking at Facebook with Jeremy Kyle on the giant telly. She just said "aah, what's up sweetheart", without looking up from her phone. Even though one of her rather nice teddies was peeping out of her jammies, it didn't quite compensate for her being a total waste of space. I had to feel sorry for her bloke who I knew was out grafting.
And what's more I didn't get a brew all morning. :(
Oh and it was snowing here last night, but it's all melted now.

Snowed a bit more tonight, and now the temp is dropping like a stone, so some crunchy roads in the morning. So tomorrow may be my once a year slide down the hill and into the main road at the bottom. Been lucky so far but eventually I'll cross paths with something big and heavy.

Well, it's all white and crispy/icy here - no proper fluffy snow! Simply because most of what has fallen is sleet, and which has since frozen.
And it's bright and sunny too, which is bollox. What we need is some proper thick snowflakes falling, against a bleak backdrop of dark grey skies, and not too cold, so we get some lovely thick 'white cotton-wool' on the ground, not this hard, crunchy pish....:rolleyes:

Not at all - I love snow, although I did love it more when I had a Range Rover!
I was in New York at the weekend and the threatened snow never materialised - just rain. However, it was -15 degC on Monday with added wind chill. Now that was properly COLD!!
Marco, it seems you and I are the only ones on this entire forum who actually like snow.
Lol... I love snow, and so does my wife, mainly for its effect on the landscape (we both love snowy scenery), but also because if your house is geared up for it (as ours is), then there's nothing more comforting than snuggling up in front of a roaring log fire, with a nice drink, whilst looking outside at a beautiful white winter wonderland!:)
*That* specific (comforting) feeling cannot be replicated at any other time of the year - and certainly not whilst sunning oneself on a beach!:nono:
That's why Del and I enjoy the wonders of *all* the seasons, and love the differences that each one brings, and how it influences your behaviour accordingly. Only the boring and/or undiscerning want it warm and sunny all the time!!;)

It's not the snow itself I have a problem with it's the effect it has on my ability to get from A to B. Because I have to do that.
A heavy snowfall in the afternoon that sticks and then freezes and the entire city gets gridlocked within an hour due to accidents blocking the roads. Then you're looking at maybe 2 hours to do 6 miles in a car. Or walk it. It's a total pain in the arse.
I'm guessing that doesn't happen in Canada because they've got their shit together with driving in snow and they don't all start smashing into each other the second a few flakes hit the tarmac.
In other words, folk can't drive here in anything other than perfect conditions, and idiots don't adjust their driving when conditions are worse, so blame THEM (and their ineptitude) for the hassle it causes you, not the snow!!;)

Many of our cars are not great in it tho. And we can't use chains as you'd cut the tarmac and ruin your suspension.
Changing to studded tires in winter helps but not everyone can afford 2 sets of tyres and switching etc.
Problems this country has is it gets shitty wet snow that can become impassable quickly but you never know when you'll or if you'll get it.
Austria Switzerland Canada etc all know pretty much where when how much every year. You can plan for that

Too many clueless idiots going around in 'sheds', and who are simply incapable of driving in snow or ice - and also who ignore the warnings, in bad conditions, of staying at home unless their journeys are unavoidable!:rolleyes:

Far too many, and by that I really mean 90% of drivers stop learning anything good about their ability after they sit a test.
It's hey I'm perfect now where they they then get even worse that they really were coz the don't try to learn. Controlling a skid is not hard but you need practice

All of my journeys are unavoidable, it's how I get to work and get paid. Snow is lovely if you don't have to be somewhere, and you can just wrap up warm and get out in it, or look at it from a toasty vantage point. Not so nice when you drive to work in the dark and come home in the dark. By weekend it'll just be a load of grey slushy crap :(

...which is why I wasn't referring to you, or journeys you make (or others like you) to work, but rather folk who could conduct their non-essential journeys at another time, and so should stay at home if the snow is really bad. Of course I agree with your latter point, but what about on your days off? Also, don't you ever drive for pleasure - what about your trip to Shrewsbury?;)
If you've nowhere to go and just chilling at home, which is partly what you should be doing on your days off, then you can enjoy the snow the same as me:)

Yup (on all counts), and I did the same. My driving instructor was a customer in my dad's shop, so 'went the extra mile', as it were, when preparing me for my test. He was pretty thorough, and even taught me aspects about the engine and the importance of maintaining correct tyre pressures.
In terms of the bit in bold, too true - and that situation isn't helped by cars now, brim-full of tech, doing much of the 'driving' for the drivers!!:doh:

Most definitely. You need to practice skids etc too. When I was young I used to take the car up to the industrial estates and find a quiet spot. Then test how me and car reacted to various situations, finding out what I could do and more importantly what I couldn't..
Far too many, and by that I really mean 90% of drivers stop learning anything good about their ability after they sit a test.

You are right on Grant. Everyone who drives on snow and ice should learn to skid. And then when you buy a new car, learn it again so you know how it reacts. When our daughters were learning to drive we would take them to the high school parking lot on weekends and let them loose doing donuts, skidding, sliding sideways. Great fun, but they learned a ton.
I suppose not many cars there have snow tires? Not studded or chains I mean - just snow tires? Insurance companies here give 10% discount if you fit them to your car....basically pay for themselves over a few years, so everyone can afford them - no excuse not to. If none of you have ever driven a car with them, they are amazing -- it's like you're glued to the road. Even rear wheel drive performance cars, which would normally be in the ditch at the first snowflake, grip like 4WD with a set of snows fitted.

Anita does most of the driving on these pleasure trips as she really loves driving (which is her was of telling me my driving is shit-boring, without actually saying it). True, I am a bit more cautious than her, but anyway I prefer her to drive, as I like to look out at the scenery as we go, something I can't properly do when driving.

I agree with all if this but, unfortunately when the snow compacts and starts to resemble an ice rink, and your household has two rear wheel drive cars that won’t actually move on a surface like this, the whole thing becomes a moot point!
I also agree with the staying at home and enjoying the day idea. Trouble is, whilst my workplace is also fine with staff not taking unnecessary risks in this sort of weather, they still deduct the day from your holiday allowance. I’d much rather use my holiday for planned days off!

I can imagine you enjoy being 'chauffeured around' on your days off, with having to drive all the time for your work. The only time Del drives is in her own car. If we're using mine, I always drive, as getting behind the wheel of the Brabster is lots of fun, especially now with the sound system that's in it!:eek::D

God, no. I hate laptops and only use one when I absolutely have to. They never have enough USB sockets, many don’t have CD-ROM drives any more and I loathe using those stupid trackpads instead of a proper mouse.
More importantly, though, I only want to do work at work, or in the study at home, and nowhere else! If I’m just surfing for the hell of it on the sofa or in the garden, then I use an iPad.

However, some folk, who don't use a computer for work, still seem to like to have a cumbersome and ugly PC 'tower' sat in the house, with all the space it takes up, when the likes of a MacBook Pro is just as fast, or faster, and can do pretty much everything a big home PC can, whilst being portable and taking up virtually no space. Crazy!
Oh, and the trackpad mouse on a MacBook Pro is a joy to use, very smooth, fast and responsive. I've found no issues with it whatsoever, and I do a LOT of typing everyday, so it was crap I'd know about it. The clunky, unresponsive ones, usually found on cheap Windows machines, however, are a nightmare!:nono:

I tried out a comb over look a few years ago, using a hair extension belonging to one of my daughters. It wasn't a good look for me - I think the colour was wrong. My daughter refused to leave the house with me till I took it off, and I never bothered with it again.

I usually have it bonded in place. Strangely, I've found marmalade very effective for this (as long as the bits of orange rind are taken out). The only drawback being the swarm of wasps that follow me about in the summer.

Snow storm on the way here for later today -- temp is -20C now, 15cm snow coming this afternoon and evening with 60 km/hr winds, temps will stay at -15 to -20 for a few days, with wind chills of -30C expected. Typical Canadian January, in other words... :)

Started with the sleet this morning, and by lunchtime we were just cold wet and muddy, so decided to do a 'Jocky Wilson' (early dart).
Back at home now, the sleet is snow, and it's sticking on the road alright. By the time these clouds reach Wrexham, there'll be none left. Just glad I'm home - better to be "snowed in" than out :)

Yes, the good old days, when the old "merde blanc du chien" was plentiful, and could easily be harvested from the pavements (the modern stuff is just too sloppy). Healthy stuff too, no one had calcium deficiency in those days. It seemed to disappear in the 80's but then we did get Stock, Aitken and Waterman, which was more or less the same.
How's the snow coming along in Clywd-land? We got a bit of a top-up a couple of hours ago, and the Rivington hills, which I can see from the lounge window, are looking really nice.

i heard some of usa was getting a polar vortex. nasty! makes my -2 this morning positively warm. about +3c now and balmy.
Rd was frosty when i went to shop but ok now.. car was fine on it, pulling away on hill; traction control I guess
Same weather here Timothy... -22C, but not as windy...only -33 wind chill. You must be getting a blast off Lake Michigan. Apparently Chicago is supposed to get down to -30C tonight, and set a new record.

Yes, we are experiencing some heavy winds dropping the temperatures quite a bit. Almost unbearable, but yet I say we are fortunate as well. Some folks deal with this for most of their winters! Another day or two we will see temps rising quite a bit though, back to much more manageable.
I am thankful I do not have to work outside in this stuff anymore-or at least it is more rare. I used to work at a refinery, the winters were just plain awful, as more than 95% of my work was outdoors and typically high up on distillation towers and platforms. I would begin to freeze by November and didn't feel like my body would thaw out until about May!

Git yer butt over here then, Marco! We had 30 cm last night. Wonderful! Proper winter finally. The neighbourhood is a chorus of snowblowers and people digging out their driveways this morning.
Getting cold tonight though, -22C / - 33 wind chill, but warming up later this week to -10. Should be perfect skiing and snowshoeing weather by the weekend. Yippee!!!

Yup, pretty much right on Marco :D. These Crap Weather threads are a constant source of amusement for me. I mean, honestly, my 87 year old mother still lives on the Canadian prairies (where I grew up), where temps of -30 to -35 for weeks on end are normal. I never hear her complaining, and she still gets out to do her shopping, visit friends. Today's temp there is -39C for chrissakes. I'll call her up today and see if she whines about it (highly unlikely) :D

I just talked to my Mom, and she's in good humour about the weather. "Well, no walks for me today then..." was about as whiny as she got :). Wind chill is -50C there, BTW.

I don't think she'd be too fussed about the lane departure thing, or the rear camera, I know she'd feel like the car was driving her. But who knows, often today's "unnecessary" becomes tomorrow's "indispensable".

Must have been a Scandinavian thing, Volvo were/are quite big on them too. Might have something to do with climate in home country - I used to have a Fiat Punto, and the heater was shit, though to be fair the rest of it was too.
On motorway it will brake and accelerate for you keeping a space berween u and car in front. It reacts faster than you do.
A lot of the stuff is switchable tho. Can even park itself not that I've got round to trying it.
The touch the door handle and it opens is cool

Too funny Martin! We have a Saab, and yes it has heated seats :), and yes they are sweet. Parking one's butt on a leather seat at -20 is no treat, let me tell you :eek: Trick is to start the car and walk away for 5 minutes to let it (and the seat heater) warm up before actually getting in and driving off.

You have to kind of watch out having a really nasty fart with the seat heater turned up high, kind of enhances the fumes....and if you end up with a slightly moist one, that surely will make things itch when it dries out. Not that I would know of course. I drive an older truck with no goodies on it, barely has a seat. Or heater.

We've started doing Florida regularly now, just got back from there, as our youngest daughter married an American last year and they have settled there. We tend to go for a month at a time.
too many bitey things in these warm places. up hear the worst you get is midgies for a few weeks in summer.

Dont get them around here. Tree and waters edge areas like the lochs etc mostly. That duck must be hard core, you wouldn't get me swimming that close to an alligator.
Gaters can climb too so dont think climbing a tree will save you.... just run.. they aint very fast so you should easily out run them. better still dont go there :lol:

It's Florida so you can walk around tooled up without the man hassling you. I reckon a few rounds of 9mm parabellum between the eyes will deter most pursuing amphibians.
