So, I'm considering entering the digital realm of music.

A Pi has been touted as offering what I want. Basically, a HDD coupled to a Pi to play music from.

I'm a complete noob so recommend me a Pi, DAC, ETC.

Details and experience of this sort of rig would be beneficial too

I love my Pi.. I have so many questions... I’ll start with what amp are you using?

I can loan you a Pi with Allo Boss DAC if you like.

See if it's what you're after before buying one.

In fact I also have an Allo Sparky with Piano DAC and Kali reclocker sitting doing nothing too, it's a bit trickier to set up as it needs 2 psus.

I could send you down that 774 cable for resoldering at the same time [emoji12]

Let me know what you think.

[emoji23][emoji23] I haven't got one mate.I had a feeling you didn't as I saw you had sold your mtech. Wasn't sure if you'd replaced it.

I'll look out all the bits later today and try and get them in the post tomorrow via Special Delivery to get them to you on Friday.

Only thing I might not have will be an 8gb micro SD card but if I have a spare I'll put that in too.

I'll warn you right now neither the Boss OR Piano setup will compete with your turntable setup. They'll get a good way there but when you think of the outlay they're brilliant value. Digital is however still a shallower pit than vinyl [emoji23]

Yes, I am not expecting to see it match the vinyl, I'm actually seeing how it compares to cd. I should have a tasty CDP here sin the next few weeks. That's the goal anyway.

Oli,
Any scope for you to borrow a dac with optical capability?

The google CCA is really worth a try with a decent optical-proper hi fi bargain for streaming IMHO.

As a one stop solution the Innous zen mini mk2 is a marvellous server solution....especially for the computer daftees like myself!!!

To be honest Oli to make a fair comparison with a good CDP or to beat it square then a server is a must. Laptops don't cut it. If you can borrow an InnuOs server as well as a slice of pie you will get some good sounds. Borrow a Mytek Brooklyn or Chord Qutest DAC and you may start to think Digital is a viable option to compete with vinyl.:)

I could try and borrow Alan's Topping DAC to try. I believe he's just bought a CCA too. Might see if I can grab a listen to his setup.

I'm not looking at competitive listening Vs Vinyl as to me, there's no point. Vinyl is king here BUT I do want to see how Streaming via a PI or similar would do against a very good CDP in the Technics SL1200.

When I win the lottery, I may go for a proper DAC/server setup.

 Yes a lottery win would be useful mate. I understand what your doing now. Streaming is another matter altogether, are you using Spotify Premium or Tidal as tidal is the only real comparison with a good CDP.

Oliver you don’t need a laptop or server with an RPi, you can eliminate that expense and start with a stand-alone Rpi plus local storage and either a top-hat DAC or SPDIF hat out to your preferred DAC. Loads of tweaky options then follow to improve on the setup without ever investing in a music server. I tried the IQAudio and HiFi Berry tophat DACs and for £30 they are very good...I moved on though to a home built lashup of an RPi in the same box as a heavily modded TDA1541 connected via I2S. This lashup has stayed, I’ve not felt the need to improve on it although I’ve just ordered an Allo I2S reclocker to try with it.

Includes:

1 x Pi/Boss DAC with mSD card containing Volumio

1 x Allo Sparky with Piano 2.1 DAC and Kali reclocker, mSD card fitted with Volumio ( only this version works with Sparky.

1 x 5v 3a PSU for the reclocker and adapter as the PSU is two pin.

A spare 32gb mSD card with MoOde 4.3 on it in case you want to try it on the Pi.

A short PSU lead, barrel to mUSB fit.

A barrel to mUSB adapter plug.

You will need to find another 5v 2-3a PSU for the Sparky as the reclocker.

The Kali and Piano DAC can fit the Pi too.

If anyone can tell me what to try first, I'll be very pleased

Hi Oil,

This is an interesting video about the Pi and upgrading it. Some background info anyway.

Not sure if it really tells you about setting up a Pi with the software interface etc but there are loads of folk on here that will know all that stuff.

The Darko video is just a nice little introduction as it were. Looks like it could be a serious contender as a DAC when it is sorted but as Darko mentions it gets bit pricey!

Not wanting to hijack the thread, but I've just ordered an Allo Boss DAC but intersted to hear impressions on the Piano/Kali that you have...

I'm currently using the USB out of my RPi into my Chinese Zero dac, it comfortably outclassed the one that came with the Pi. I'd advise against using a pi with a basic Dac hat as being a long term solution for anything except casual listening.

Maybe one day, when I use a touch screen to access my hdd-stored music, I'll be able to take a Pi plus add-ons seriously. Just now, I'm a lazy git and something like a well performing Topping D30 will do all I need and have three inputs to switch between, so keeping the box count down as well (eighty quid and apparently immune audibly from power supply types - in theory)...

I was mega Impressed with it, especially with the linear PSU Alan built for it.
