Not very automatic, if you need something to wind them with. Since my brother moved his self-winding watch onto his right wrist, it's pretty much looked after itself :D

Not if you are left handed or get the other half to do the " winding " for you ;)

I've got just the one watch; a Swiss railway watch with a white face and black hands and a red second hand, which is easy to read. I went for many years without a watch at all.
My 'main' Christmas present will be having my umbrella repaired, once I remember to pack it up and send it off to the repair place in Croydon.

I fancied a submariner but saw an Explorer II in Goldsmiths at Lakeside & liked it (the 2nd time zone hand is a nice feature)

I had a nice Citizen watch I wore to work for 15 years. On my last day of work, I went to the bar, and took the watch off and thought to myself, “I won’t need that anymore!”. The gentleman beside me said, “Wow that’s a nice watch you’ve got there!”, I said, “ Its yours”, and gave him the watch on the spot. I haven’t missed it either, as long as I know what hour it is, I’m doing pretty good.

That's the spirit! We all live our lives to the minute these days, and it really shouldn't be like that. And I'm as guilty as anyone :(
I had a nice Citizen watch I wore to work for 15 years. On my last day of work, I went to the bar, and took the watch off and thought to myself, “I won’t need that anymore!”. Although ive got a few wrist watches i almost never wear one, as i dont like it on my arm; comes from working inside tvs ... i wore pocket watches a lot but rarely now. my mobile phone or the car gives me the time ....should i need it.

Bought myself a gold Pulsar for my thirtieth, still going strong 20 years on. Had a Casio sports/diver thing for the previous 12 years to that. That still works too although needs a strap and a battery.

Stopped smoking a pipe when I discovered Ganja. Mind you, I was only fourteen. :)
I like the idea of using it at meetings in work. Makes a good pointer and can be used to stab the air in order to emphasise a point. I reckon could make Managing Director in a year if I had a pipe.

Don't be putting weed in it until you get home - that kind of thing can really stall your climb up the career ladder.

People tend to collect things that appeal to them. A friend has more than 18 guitars! Some are worth thousands. While he always plays this cheap BC Rich at practice, always the same one. Another friend collects guns, he’s an avid gun collector, even though he’s a terrible shot. I myself save gold bullion.
It’s all the same, you can show your watches, wear one when you go out. My friend can break out a $3,000 guitar and jam on it, or the other can take any one of his guns to the range and fire it. While my gold coins are no fun, they just sit there, and I can’t insure them. So there’s a lot to be said for collecting. If you had to come up with some real money in a hurry, perhaps your watch collection could bring some cash? Or a nice windfall for your benefactor?
But like you, and most people today, I’m never without my Smartphone, so even though I gave my watch away at retirement, there’s no escaping this minute by minute world we live in.

And (not entirely related) I have had a lifelong aversion to bodily embelishments, so no tattooos, gold chains, piercings or jewellery of any kind.
No interest in being a 'follower' either, so I don't get involved in football and other sports, religion, politics, etc (but I do visit audio forums :)).
None the worse for it!

I love collecting stuff (Hifi,records, cds, watches, model buses, coins), I enjoy all my collections & they will all be added to as & when desired items might crop up (except the coins, have kind of given up on that one) as I'm not overly obsessive about any of them.
I'd feel like I was missing an arm without a watch (even though I'm retired & my times my own) & as I suffer with a goldfish memory these days I rely on my smartphone to remind me about events/appointments etc. & I like being able to 'google' stuff while out & about, has settled many an argument.
Not one for much jewellery either (other than watches of course & a gold chain that Mum got me) & with you on the 'following' bit, can't understand why people get so worked up about particular sports especially.

I just can't face it anymore..

My dad once bought me Denim aftershave for Christmas, and I had to try VERY hard to appear grateful - I'd had a full beard for many years. I added it to my bathwater, and that worked quite well. :) Three baths and it was gone

I had a go at collecting vintage Webley air pistols, but then realised I couldn't display them without looking like one of those mental survivalists you see on American TV. So I stopped at two, both of which live in a cupboard.
Records and CD's satisfy my need to collect shit.

It seems we are much alike Geoff. I have never cared for any sports team, even in High School, I could care less who won the ball game. And I have been to tattoo parlors with friends, all intent on getting a new tat! And could never choose one, nothing I was prepared to wear the rest of my life. The only jewelry I’ve ever worn was a wedding ring, that came off the instant that was over.
Other than a record collection and a CD collection, I’ve never spent money on valuable items just to have them, to collect them. Gold coins isn’t a collection, as much as a savings account. Although, I did just buy my 5th bass guitar, so a collection could be forming?
