Been Upgrading!

Yes, I know it’s not in the same league as my Kavent/Usher set up, but just before and actually at Christmas, I have made two significant upgrades!

Firstly, having noticed a slight lack of balance in the Pioneer amp, I bought an Onkyo A9211 off a student going back overseas, and one of my daughters bought me a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 9 speakers, at the ridiculous low price of £39! which much to my surprise upped the game over my Gale 3010S speakers. Yes I know the addition of the REL Quake is cheating a bit!

Sounds very good for a bedroom system, and interesting to note it was a far relative of the Wharfedales that got me into Hifi in the early 70’s!

And £39 is probably the approximate cost of Wharfedale Dentons in the 70's. And that would have been almost an average week's wage. We've never had it so good!

I had Super Lintons, and they were approximately £51, so even cheaper!

Plus, I was only earning around £11 a week when I got my first ‘proper’ hifi costing £153.

Snap! I too was on £11 per week at the time, although this was Jan 1976, and the Dentons, along with a Bush Arena amp and BSR McDonald deck were my 18th birthday present. It was them or driving lessons. I favoured tuneage over mileage.

Yeah we'd have hated you as well, except when it was time to get the beers in.

I started on £9 per week in July '74 as an apprentice letterpress compositor/proof reader while the "journeymen" earned about £32. Printing was always crap pay unless you worked on newspapers, esp. Fleet Street. :(

as apprentice mine was similar. went up to that when i moved to a different co after qualifying. got a estate car instead of a van too which was a big pull

the wharfdale diamond serius are a real bargain , the 10.1 was recently being sold for 139 but 39 quid is great

Yeah estate cars are much classier than most vans, but you would need curtains to capitalise on its "pulling power" :D

Went home with my first ever pay packet and my dad asked how much I had ? I told him and then he said

" Now give your mum £5 and give her £5 every week from now on :eek:" seemed very harsh at the time but now I realise I had to pay my way in the world , Well Done dad , RIP :(
