I have more than a sense of groundhog day with it now. I wish we could have themed events where they rolled round every four years. Any suggestions?

I dont know one year could be a very traditional christmas and the next year could be a different themed celebration...no trees no turkey.. Snow queen year with costumes to match. Pagan year with Stonehenge costumes. One year could be Saint Martins Solstice and you could all send some money.... I need a Lambo.

I mean if the world cup was every year you would get piss bored with it...get my point

We bought a snow globe last week in Bowness. It is in the style of an old fashioned lantern, batteries keep the snow moving, and it's lit up by LEDs. Tacky or what? I don't care, the grandkids will love it :)

It may take, but usually they die.

Once the tap root has been damaged/snapped they’re already dying... However, it’s been known for them to take off. Plant it in fresh compost with wood ash feed and it may just give it a chance ;)

You're the expert in that area, so can confirm if Everest were around at that time or not, but I'm pretty sure they were:)

Similarly, when was central heating available in homes? Folks go on about freezing cold bedrooms and ice on their windows when they were kids, yet all I can remember is being toasty and warm - in or out of bed! Seem to remember I also always had an electric blanket, for when it got really cold.

Yes everest were around. Sure they did ours or quoted for it.
As we had lovely sash windows with leaded top panes we got secondary glazing so we could keep it. It wasn't as good as hoped tho.

So no nice original features like your place.

It might've been different before I was born when my parents moved in, as I doubt there would've been double glazing or central heating installed then, but defo when I was a kid. My dad, the only breadwinner at the time, was the type who would've worked hard enough to ensure that the house was warm/draught-free and not damp for his family - and that would've been a No1 priority before anything else, other than putting food on the table.

No doubt you had lots of friends calling round during the winter months, who mysteriously had other places to be come springtime - on our estate you would have been known as "that posh kid" :D I know we didn't have double glazing, the council used to have painters put a big shed on the green every four years and painted everyone's doors and windows.

I think it would have been late sixties/early seventies when Everest started advertising their windows. Farmer Ted Moult used to demonstrate their draughtproofing qualities with a feather, with a feather, and to emphasise their strength he stand behind one while someone swung a 100lb bag of dead sheep at it, which unfortunately never broke through to take his head off. "You only fit double glazing once, so fit the best - fit Everest". Bollocks, I've fitted it loads of times, but not Everest, their stuff is weird and madly overpriced :(

Also went and ordered the turkey and other locally sourced meat from the village farm shop, Hog & Hen (http://www.hogandhenfarmshop.co.uk/). Good deal on a package which should give us everything we need for the big day and more. :)

We found a great farm selling local Christmas trees a couple of villages away. Sue splashed out on some new decorations to compliment our new countryside location as well as some of the old favourites. :)

Looking good, mate! Just how we like our tree presented, although we go a little more vintage with the decs, and use coloured lights, which give a warmer glow (especially in the dark), and is a bit more retro. Really don't like artificial trees, especially those white monstrosities!:doh:

That's 'cos you were daft enough to go near any shops the second last weekend before Christmas!;)

Shop early in the morning, on weekdays, say around 9.30am, and you should have little (or far less) problems. That's what I do, and you're also retired:)

We've got the vast majority of what we need now, really just the goose to collect from the butchers and, some lobster tails from the fishmonger (for a 'posh' prawn cocktail we're serving as a starter on Xmas day), and fresh veg from the local market, all of which will be collected on the day (very early morning), and that's it!

All booze and presents have been bought and/or wrapped, and cards written and sent. Del stops work on Friday, and then is off until 5th of January, so really looking forward to lots of eating, drinking and socialising with friends and family:cool::christmas:

Met up with some old work colleagues on Friday (45 of them!) in a local carvery for the standard xmas lunch (it was a real name remembering session). After lunch we carried on drinking into the evening. At 8 the last few of us 'diehards' decided it might be time to head home. needless to say there were two pubs on the way back to the station & as it was raining we had to stop to dry out in both of them. The second one had a really nice vibe with a very attractive 'Mrs Claus' hosting the karaoke and Guinness was 3 quid a pint. Ended up rolling in well after midnight.

On Saturday evening after a nice Indian takeaway it was down to the local British Legion club (which I joined a few months back) for a few more pints, a live act & a free buffet :)

Got two more sessions planned next week.

I'm currently just relaxing with some Quality Street & wine :cool:

Had a bite to eat in the Half Crown, 2 meals for £8.49, not huge portions but filled a hole.

So the above, wrapped in streaky bacon, with all the trimmings, pigs in blankets, del's homemade stuffing, gravy, etc... Preceded by a prawn and lobster cocktail, and finished off with an Italian festive classic, homemade chocolate Torrone, with pistachios and hazelnuts, etc:

Looks a bit like some Rocky Road slices - very tasty. We'll be boring and trad, and have Christmas pud.
