Hi allll
I've see a few suppliers, like Audiovisual + Rothwell use this particular type of cable, but I wondered if anyone can tell me whether you can buy this phono cable on a reel/off the shelf? Because of it's thin size, I was thinking of wiring up a few Lenco's straight from connector strip to a phono stage...

Most likely to be RG179A/U coaxial cable. Available off the drum for approx. £3.60 a metre.

Yep, Barry has nailed it. However, having experimented with making up cables from it and also listening to commercial cables made from it, I would say it is bloody awful rubbish for audio interconnects.

I agree, the FEP outer cladding and PTFE dielectric make the cable 'springy', which means it is difficult to dress and lay properly. RG316 cable is smaller in diameter, but has a similar construction is worse still. Both cables were intended as RF transmission cables only.

I know reviews aren't the be all but why did HFC give it 5 stars if it's that bad?

Bad reviews don’t sell magazines.

If you look at the actual spec of this cable it is not even copper but actually plated steel - this is not a problem for the ultra high frequencies it is intended to carry but quite a different matter at audio frequencies.

If you haven't got any good cable and this was all you had knocking about, you'd live with it but yes, not great in my experience

I made a couple of cables from this. Didn't like it.

Mogami make micro-coaxial. And coaxial. If you want cheap and flexible, that's what I'd use.

I just made a lot using Van Damme Pro Classic, seems to be ok and nothing I don't like about it while its burning in

Well guys...as per usual, you've come up trumps...this cable is also sold by a "you know who"...but we won't go there...just shows you..info is power, and lack of it is dispair!
I'm interested in the Mogami make micro-coaxial..(Bigman80 recommended) any clues on where to buy loose in UK?

It will perform well enough for £25 but they aren't 'worlds best cables' as described.

I have used this exact cable myself, preferring it to Klotz and Sommer Carbokab and is something of an unsung hero for the budget buyer.

Used the Amphenol plugs too and they were decent enough for £2 per plug, if I recall correctly.

Can't go wrong for the money.

Edit, they are gold plated brass as suspected. But for £25, what can you expect!
