But why do systems sound better in the dark? I often sit there in pitch darkness thinking I like this upgrade

Better with the curtains shut too - I've started doing that in summer as well.

But yeah thank god it starts getting a bit lighter. Especially in the mornings. The only time I don't mind getting up in the pitch black is if I'm going somewhere exotic on holiday.

Curtains shut, I can understand as they provide a bit of damping but I don't like listening in the dark. I find that I can concentrate better on the imagery, in the light.

It's only about 3 minutes every day but it cheers me up to think that we have got over the hill.

C'mon science bods, is the lengthening of the days linear, or does it accelerate/slow down at certain points? (Ooh I need a lie down after that).

I don't think it is linear to start with. In fact I think it actually still gets darker earlier for a couple more days after the equinox. No idea how that works.

The December solstice comes on December 21 at 4:23 p.m. CST. That's December 21 at 22:23 UTC. It marks the Northern Hemisphere's shortest day (first day of winter) and Southern Hemisphere's longest day (first day of summer).

Only shut in summer if I'm listening to music. Makes a big difference if you have a window behind the listening seat.

At night I like the lights down low. Nothing worse than brightly lit rooms. Even at work I keep my corner of the office quite dark. It's bright artificial light I'm not keen on. Sunshine I've got no problem with.

Yeah, I'm the same. I *UTTERLY DETEST* that horrible cold bright, white glare you get from strip lights [usually found in offices and such like], almost to the point of it making me ill:spew:

It's so stark and uninviting... No, at home in our lounge, we always have subdued lighting, which is warmer and cosier. Right now, we have one small table tamp on; the only other lights are from the christmas tree and glow from the log fire.

Even in the kitchen, where bright light is often needed to work in, we have banks of LEDs, 'strategically trained' onto the work surfaces necessary, so that ONLY the area that needs lit, is lit. and not the whole room!

My pet hate, however, is brightly lit restaurants, firstly because of all the things I've mentioned about it being cold and uninviting, but secondly when the idiots still insist on putting candles on the tables, supposedly to 'create intimacy', when the room's that fucking bright you can't even notice the sodding things!!

I don’t mind the cold of winter, as long as it’s nice and bright. What gets me down are those days when it’s cold but grey, overcast, damp and miserable with it. Then I get a bit gloomy!

Marco
21-12-2018, 19:58
It honestly doesn't bother me one iota. I simply adjust my behaviour accordingly to fit the conditions:)

I often wonder if those, out with of folks suffering from medical conditions, who "feel gloomy" at the mere sight of a grey cloud [I'm exaggerating, but you get the gist] are prone to such feelings, due to their gloomy lives, and a sense of unhappiness or discontentment, perhaps occurring under the surface and causing some from of depression, and which is exacerbated by bad weather?

I'm convinced that if you're a happy and contented person, with no such issues and a 'sunny disposition', who genuinely enjoys life (count me in) then you'll always feel happy, no matter the weather!

I'm not seeing much in the way of gloomy people in these pages, just a lot of folk who are not keen on the extended darkness and cold weather of winter. I don't think of myself as miserable, I just have preferred seasons.

As is widely reported, there are plenty of "gloomy" people living on the streets this winter. Not necessarily gloomy by nature, many will be regular folk caught up in gloomy circumstances.

Anyway, enough gloom, MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY! :christmas:

Yeah I completely agree, and if it were up to me, I'd ERADICATE homelessness here in the UK, as it's a disgrace a country like this has so many people sleeping rough on the streets. Just take the money needed off all the fat cats!

In terms of feeling happy all year round, regardless of the weather, for me it's simple:

Winter = enjoy snuggling up beside the log fire in a cosy candlelit room, with glass of something nice to drinnk, and look forward to Christmas, especially if it snows.

Spring = enjoy all the lovely colours of the changing landscape and new flowers, warmer weather, and look forward to summer.

Summer = enjoy the good weather (hopefully) and all the outdoor eating/drinking/socialising, long days, and look forward to going on holiday.

Autumn = enjoy the changing colours of the landscape, lovely russet-leaved trees, the end of uncomfortably hot summers (which has been the case recently) and a nice freshness in the air, and look forward to winter.

Key: find JOY in ALL the seasons... No need to feel gloomy, ever!:exactly:

Scott's diaries are kept at the British Library. A few years ago they had an exhibition of his ill-fated attempt to reach the South Pole and his diaries, opened to the appropriate page were on display. Oate's action is recorded, but not his departing words.

I found it deeply moving to see and read those diary pages.
