And here's how.

A few things occurred to me regarding the world of hifi.

It has, compared to most hobbies a vast amount of foo and snake oil products.

Many people believe the more something costs the better it is.

If somebody gets ripped off they're unlikely to admit it and will defend their purchase to the death.

Lastly, and most importantly, lots of audiophiles use blutac for a variety of purposes.

So here's my plan, I buy loads of packs of blutac and rebrand it as "audiophile grade vibration damper and anti-slip putty" and sell it for £25 per pack for low grade, £50 for high end and £100 for reference quality. (obviously it's all the same but people are happy to pay more if they think they're getting the best)
All that's needed is some good reviews in the hifi press (again the high price and foo pseudo science on the packaging will guarantee this) and I'm rich.

PS. 10% discount for AOS members

Hmm.
The range only goes up to Reference?
My system obviously deserves better than that.
How much for 10 packs of Reference Plus?

Barry

You could re-package this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Mortite-19-oz-x-90-ft-Grey-Weatherstrip-and-Caulking-Cord-B2/100152937?keyword=Mortite&semanticToken=d00200000+%3E++st%3A%7Bmortite%7D%3A st+cnn%3A%7B0%3A0%7D+cnb%3A%7B0%3A0%7D+oos%3A%7B0% 3A1%7D+qu%3A%7Bmortite%7D%3Aqu

Chop it up into say 2" strips and charge £2 apiece. Of course the 'standard', 'high end' and 'reference' versions would need to be a different colour.

I am planning to offer bespoke versions at a guide price of approximately 10-20% of the cost of your system

Personally I think sound absorbing crystals strategically positioned in the corners of the room hung on elegant strands is the way to go. These will stop unwanted sound reflections. Easy and cheap to make and can sell as an ornament for the wife. You can market various version in size and crystal quality, and made from different materials for different effects. In fact I think its so good I put it up on crowd funding. :eyebrows:

The mistake you're making is that you're explaining what they do, the tactic is to advertise it making no claims as to what the procuct actually does or how it achieves it. This protects you from trading standards

A carbon fiber, resin dampened outlet cover. Only $250. A bargain at twice the price. Per their ad copy:

All non-magnetic Damper cover plate finished with NCF carbon fiber sheet and Neo Damper sheet plus NCF resin plate for the most effective damping

NCF - Nano Crystal² Formula - Nano Crystalline, Ceramic and Carbon Powder Incorporated into select Furutech products, Nano Crystal² Formula --- NCF is comprised of a special crystalline material that has two “active” properties. First, it generates negative ions that eliminate static and secondly, it converts thermal energy into far-infrared. Furutech then combines this remarkable crystalline material with nano-sized ceramic particles and carbon powder for their additional “Piezo Effect” damping properties. The resulting Nano Crystal² Formula is the ultimate electrical and mechanical damping material – only found in Furutech products! Nano Crystal² Formula eliminates static, “interconverts” thermal, mechanical and electrical energy and damps vibrations—all for the finest Furutech Pure Transmission signal imaginable.

Neo Damper – an extremely effective elastomer composite material created in Japan for vibration damping in sensitive electrical and mechanical devices such as high end audio products where transference or transmission of vibrational and electrical noise through power cables has detrimental effect of sound reproduction

I seem to remember a character called Peter Belt, now passed away, who used to flog some fairly contentious hifi 'upgrades', like black plastic cable ties to put round your speaker cables, not to tidy them up or coil them, just put round a single run of the cable. It was supposed to improve the sound. He had his fans and he had his critics, though I believe most people felt his products were based on optimism rather than any logical scientific evidence. Selling paper clips that had undergone 'special treatments'. Yeah, right .

That's the same sort of bollocks as is talked about Ohno continious cast copper. The drawing process may create single crystals that are a metre or two long, but as soon as the wire is wound on a drum or bent beyond its elastic limit, those single crystals are broken into smaller units. And when the copper is put into use the crystals are broken further still.

I considered it but was concerned about allegations of racism as I couldn't offer black tac.
Thankfully it's all gender neutral.

I am also thinking of offering a fair trade, organic, ethically sourced, dolphin friendly, vegan version*

I think I’d pass trading standards as the crystals will disrupt sound waves hitting them. You just need to position them correctly to maximise effect. Hours of fun tweaking and doing listening tests, guaranteed satisfaction for the true audiophiles among us.[emoji41]

Some people are cynical about these so called 'audiophile tweaks'. It is sad but to help them I intend to repurpose these repurposed extendable rods as divining rods for foo detection.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kalttoy-Hunting-Divining-Detector-Witching/dp/B07L87C7MS/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1544686412&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=Kalttoy+Divining+rod&dpPl=1&dpID=31e7WV7r6fL&ref=plSrch

Simply extend, point at what might be foo, and if the rods detect it as such they will move in mysterious ways. For £199.95 no serious audiophile can afford to be without one.

Highly recommended, 5 star reviews on following link..

Put them in an audiophile's house, wire them up like a wind turbine and you'll have free electricity as they be spinning so fast.

I saw this a few years ago, is it not amazing? And what I’d like to know, even if everything they say is true, why should it cost so much? If it is truly carbon fiber, it may be worth $5. I don’t think I would have the heart to do something so dishonest, I guess that’s why I’m not rich?

Stayed with an ole mate of mine years ago on a farm in West Wales. He was renting the main farm house the owner who lived in the barn opposite. The owner made some dosh from coming up with black tack, not sure if the same stuff Jerry used.
His main income was from concrete horn type speakers which he would build into the houses of clients. He used quad gear on his home system. By the gate to the farm house either side of the road were placed / built some concrete speakers. They sounded great, never since heard anything like them.

We can be divided into two categories; those who care about their fellow beings, and treat them with moral consideration, and those who are predatory and often dishonest, and move on to another victim. The latter tend to be psychopaths.

But wealthy psychopaths! Women on my Facebook page go on about Karma, and I don’t know where they get it from? There are literally millions of terrible people living successful lives, I see no evidence of Karma. In fact, it seems to be the opposite, those who try to do good tend to be the ones trodden upon. I suppose a clear conscious and a sound night’s sleep are their own rewards.

Up to a point but price and marketing subconsciously sways opinion to quite an extent.
If you're told product A is premium quality and product B is an economy item you're expecting A to be better before you,'ve seen/touched/tasted/heard/driven it. If that is backed up by reviews in the media and/or celebrity or even peer endorsement you're probably going to have virtually made your mind up already.
If that wasn't the case Audi would never have sold a single A4 because their customers would all be driving Skoda Octavias

No, sorry that doesn't work with me. The only peer review I take note of, is if a friend (or someone whose opinion I trust) has bought an item, lived with it for a while and can tell me what he thinks of it. And then I will still do more research.

I take no notice of cable reviews, or those of headshells, headshell leads, equipment support, turntable pucks and mats. In fact I avoid reviews in general: pick up any up-market audio magazine and everything they review is wonderful.

In Japan, eateries will often have plastic models representing the wares they sell displayed in the window. These models are very realistic, and their modelling is considered an art form in its own right - but clearly they are inedible.

The same follows with food advertising either, static or TV advertising: many foodstuffs are replaced with something that looks very similar but capable of withstanding the heat of the illuminating lamps without wilting or melting.

Just food snobbery though isn't it? I mean a cheeseburger on a bun has protein, simple and complex carbs, fat and fibre. All the main food groups. It's not like you'll starve to death eating just cheeseburgers.

Whereas a salad is just a bit of fibre and water. If you just ate salad you'd be dead from starvation in a couple of weeks, but it's cheeseburgers that get all the bad press and salad that's supposed to be 'healthy'. Makes no sense.

I think the issue is the "balanced diet". There was a report on radio recently that a big mac and a vanilla milk shake had more calories in it than need for a healthy man for one day and if I recall correctly the equivalent of about 40 teaspoons of sugar, definitely not healthy, and if you consider that this is what many youngster get regularly. Well there comes a point when it gets to you, 6 trips with a blue light and 3 ops, and you have mortality stamped on your forehead. After all that I still went skiing in Canada 7 months ago, as I thought well I don’t know what’s coming, and I’ve spent the last 4 months being unwell with Angina as stuff has deteriorated, Happy I went though.
