This might sound simple, but I'm having a hell of a job finding a couple of boxes the right size to package and post an 'average' size tape deck.

Any ideas chaps?

A small computer box should do fine, I guess. ;)

Tried that, most were rubbish and not up to surviving DHL with electronics inside. Either that or they were far too small.

Dimitri's PC box seems the best option but need to be able to collect in person to avoid paying £5 postage on a £3 box....

Hi Hamish.

Under normal circumstances I avoid Staples like the plague as they are always massively more expensive that pretty much anywhere else. However in this case, as I just want one big box, not having to pay postage will probably make them worth checking out.

Ah yes. Except that this is a non-eBay deal between Dimitri and myself. :)

I have a local packaging wholesaler that has a factory shop. Check Yellow Pages. If you want security, double box, with bubble wrap around your item inside the first box, and bubble wrap or that thin plastic cushion-foam stuff around the box, with a bigger box around the lot. Make sure the boxes are double-walled too. I pays to over pack; most couriers expect to be able to drop a box a metre onto concrete, or at least that's what I assume when I pack anything special!
