I took mine (and passed first time, naturally...) in my driving instructor’s 1987 Mitsubishi Colt.

It gave me an opinion of mainstream Japanese cars that I still hold today, namely that they are well designed, easy to drive and as dull as ditchwater!

My first car was a beige Vauxhall Nova 1.2 that I absolutely adored. I cherished it for 5 years before going right to the other end of the Vauxhall range and a 2.5 litre Senator! I saw the Nova about 5 months later - it had been in an accident and was smashed up. I was heartbroken. :(

Passed my test in the instructors 1.1 MK1 Fiesta - a nippy car and a great view from the drivers seat, so easy to park etc (no power steering but they were light).

I passed my test in the instructors 1.1 Fiesta, not the one I had lessons in because another student wrote it off the day before, so I had the iffy pool car. It looked just like this.

My first car after passing the test was a JPS Capri lookalike, nice at first glance but an utter pile of dangerous, rubbish and as it turned out a bent MOT. I didn't have it long though as it was stolen two weeks later and found written off eighty miles away. This wasn't it but gives you an idea why I fell for the mobile shed.

My Dad bought a new 1100 in 1964, in 1971 he replaced it with a 1300 automatic. About 1985 I bought a second hand Austin 1300 Vanden Plas. I rebuilt the engine/ gearbox and tidied up the bodywork. Gave this to him as a birthday present. It was a lovely car. Nippy too, engine was basically Cooper S. Dad died in 1991, in fact it's the anniversary of his death today. Stupidly, I gave the car away about four years ago.

I had a Hillman Imp Californian some cars later.

It had the usual head gasket issues, I had changing the head gasket, at the roadside, down to a fine art 30 mins IIRC.

Fixed the issue after about 6 gaskets, the block had warped as well as the head.

Blimey, thought that I'd be the only one here to have an Isetta. Yes, passing the test in the Isetta gave me a motorcycle license about 1967.

The one pictured had been hand painted red. I rubbed it down, gave it a sealer coat, primer surfacer and many coats of black cellulose.

Must say, it was a great fun car.

My Dad was redesigning a factory about 1971, he saw a couple of boxes of old motorcycle parts there. The owner of the factory said they had been dumped. Dad asked if he could have them for me. Spent many hours cleaning painting etc. without spending much money.

I had a white one, it was my 2nd car. I wrecked the gearbox and replace it with one from the scrapper. Tuned it up a bit too. Swapped it for a Mini Cooper 998 that needed an engine rebuild. That ended up 1100cc rally spec engine running at 10.5 to 1 compression. 110bhp on rolling road at peak rpm. It was quick

I really liked the old Saturday Night ….viva. My mate had the 1.8 Magnum, absolutely ate spark plugs and they were a sod to get at with the canted over engine.

I remember passing my driving test in my Isetta, that gave me a motorcycle license. The next year I passed an ordinary car test, it must have been in my Dad's Austin 1100, but I have virtually no recollection of that.

I passed my bike test in 1981 on my Honda CB100N. It was a miserable foggy day and the examiner was a grumpy little Hitler in a Pak-a-mac running around the streets to see what I was doing. My mates clubbed together to buy some reflective gear and clear visors for their crash helmets, they all passed first time and made great store that I would fail in my black leather jacket and tinted visor, oh how I mocked them when I also passed first go and not dressed like a licorice allsort.

When it was over the cheeky bugger said...You've just scraped through...he told me to take an availabe right during the examination, which he said was a no entry..I said no, the sign said no vehicles over 7.5 tonnes.. he walked back to the sign and looked...he came back and said, ok we'll carry on and do your turn in the road...(three point turn)..which took about 5 goes as the street was so narrow...and he done his nut and started shouting at me, now whats the problem, when I stopped the car, as a young woman with a pushchair, came out of her house right in front of me. I did it all by the book, and the sod said I'd just scraped through, but hey...I got my license..

Yep that was the one, although in a slightly less vomity colour of Beige. Had a woman in a Mini hit me whilst on the test. We were at temp traffic lights and she thought they had changed in her favour. Examiner did all the necessary and got back in the car and said "we will have to cancel the test now", I was really pissed off and drove off quite quickly:D he said "you seem to be ok, shall we carry on"...which we did and I passed...1st time.

They don't call it 3 point turn any more - I think they say 'make the vehicle face the opposite direction using forward and reverse gears' or some such tosh. Point is, as long as you didn't hit anything, he probably couldn't fail you whether you did 3, 5, 7 or whatever.

Strange really, although I consider myself a pretty safe driver, I'm confident that if I took my test today I would fail for sure.

Hillman Minx 1500cc in 1969. Fortunately it was plsslng down so I didn't have to do hand signals as opening the window would have soaked me and the tester. A three point turn in that thing required the upper body strength of an Olympic gymnast.

The truck I took my drivers test in was my step dad's 1972 Ford F-250 Camper Special, with a large cabover camper he used for deer hunting, this was his daily ride 2 x 20 gallon gas tanks 8 to 10 mpg.
The mirrors where adjustable only with a wrench . He was 6ft 5. I was 5 ft.9 and 16 years old and had to lift up out of my seat to use the mirrors to back up. the windshield mirror was pointless.
My Mom would never and never did let me drive her Cadillac so the truck was all there was to drive.

When I walked the instructor to the truck for the safety inspection before the test . She said to Tom my step Dad "You really don't want him to pass today do you ? most kids use a Honda ".
To be honest it wasn't all that bad because truth is I had been driving it up and down road hunting the back roads in Dixon since I was 14 or 15 while Tom was ready to get out in a moments notice and dispatch a couple pheasant from the road. Not exactly book of Hoyle hunting but he grew up there and this was common when he was a younger man.

So all went well, I did o.k. and passed that day.
His truck was green and white , but this picture was as close as I could find to it on line.Even the camper is close to his except it had fake wood grain where the blue is.
I took a date to the drive in once in that thing and oddly no one parked behind us.
On grad night 1984 this was the truck used to hall the kegs of beer to a massive party at Folsom lake that ended the next morning when homes around the lake started complaining to the police.
My friend worked at a beer and wine warehouse and paid wholesale retail was $60.00 for a full keg then his price was $45.00 for Lowenbrau !,we fit 12 kegs in that camper! and scraped up one of the cabinets inside my Dad was not happy but furniture stain fixed it pretty well.

Mine was also a hillman imp.

I failed my first two attempts at the driving test. My dad wouldn’t let me near his car, so my only driving practice was when I had a lesson. I was paying for my own lessons, so didn’t have them very often.
Nowhere near ready for either test.

The day after my second failure, frustrated and more than a bit angry, I borrowed £100 from the bank and bought my first car. A golden/ brown hillman imp.
Total banger, but I didn’t care. I just needed to practice.
My mum was a real star and we went out every night for 30 minutes or so. Just doing three point turns, reversing etc etc.
Soon I had it mastered!!!!!

Sat the test for the 3rd time in that Hillman, and sailed through.


Ps , there was another Hillman imp in my town. The reg was DOC 999. I sometimes wonder if that plate ever made it to Harley Street.
